I discuss successfully growing the Sago palm or Cycas Revoluta outdoors in Zone 5B Ontario Canada. I currently have three Sagos in the ground, all are doing very well. The oldest one I purchased in 2015. With a new flush of leaves imine look better than many that I've on holidays in warmer climates. Commonly seen worldwide in many landscapes from Mediterranean to subtropical and tropical regions . Easy to care for and over winter in colder zones. Please watch Part 1 • Winter Protection Part...
and Part 2 • Winter Protection Part... for full details. Sago palms will add a touch of the exotic to any garden.

Awesome, as always. Visiting your garden is always a pleasure. There is so much to explore. I have one more plant to wrap for the season... My windmill palm. Looking at the forecast, I could probably go two more weeks without it being covered. However, you know how our weather changes here in Ontario. Have a happy New Year!

I am so happy I came across your channel. I am in Slovakia and the weather conditions are pretty similar to Canada so this means I can grow a fully tropical garden here too. I have so far started mostly with citrus fruit trees in huge pots and hardy kiwi, mangoes of the north outside in the soil. I ll be watching your videos and am really looking forward all the updates and things I can learn from you. You are much appreciated! Thank you.

Thank you Peter! Image if we actually had some of that real summer heat as we've only had a couple days above 30C.

Amazing how little sunburn there is. I've struggled to overwinter these outdoors. Frost damage or sunburn even on slow hardening off when wrapped up and released from their protection. I've got 4 but have given up on them here at 55°N. Too much hassle and although I love the look of them the foliage is always damaged. Yours look superb. I think they just can't take our lack of light over winter with 18 hours of dark vs the 18 hours of daylight in the summer

All of my winter protected exotics are covered with a cold frame to allow some sunlight to enter. As the plants are wrapped with a string of C9 bulbs they produce light as well. During spring I remove the lid during the day to allow sunlight in to prepare the plants gradually to harden them off. Keep on trying, they are great plants.

Found your channel and you inspired me to start my own tropical garden in the Welland area of Canada the sandy soil you speak about do you mix sand with your soil or buy it ? I call my garden Gillian’s island but can’t post a photo keep it up you do make a difference
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for watching. I do not have to buy sand. My garden is in Kitchener Ontario who's original name was Sand Hills. Best of luck with your garden.

I've had a sago palm in a planter for 8 years and it's getting too heavy to carry.. I'm thinking of planting in the ground in zone 6b and would love as much advice/instruction you can give for overwintering! I will try the C9 bulb method and make some type of shelter like the awesome ones you make. Thanks for the inspiration!

. In my home garden, sycd was grown 15 years ago. During the first 13 years it was good, but in the last two years, the growth of the leaves began to be incomplete. Note that I fertilize it every winter with manure or compost, and during the summer with NPK fertilizer. Help us❤
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan 10 месяцев назад
@@abbashasan8344 what zone are you in? When you see new leaves starting to grow make sure the plant is getting enough water. Do not over fertilize when plant is not actively growing during winter. Everything else you are doing sounds good. Best of luck.

Hi Dragan, I just realized I can’t send a private message. I’m wondering if you’ve ever planted euphorbia characias in your exotic garden? I have some in a pot I’d like to plant outside in the garden and cover with a wooden box and 2” pink foam insulation. Do you think this protection would suffice or would I need to provide supplemental warmth? I’m in Ottawa, btw. Thanks, great videos!
@GreenDragan

Thank you very much! Any exotic plant outside of its natural zone ,wrapped in a styrofoam box is like putting it in a cooler for the winter. It will require some additional heat. My private email is greendragan99@gmail.com Cheers.
