Final update of my exotic front garden in zone 5B ontario Canada showing the progress of the "Pindo section" late Sept. 2022. The major plants include 2 Pindo palms, 2 Cordyline australis, 2 Cycas revoluta, Bougainvillea, Tecoma stans and many more. Following a harsh winter and no significant rain all summer with regional watering restrictions many local gardens including mine did not reach their potential this year. Frost in early October cut short any hope of an extended summer to allow more growth.

Your garden is absolutely amazing considering the amount of effort you have put in to keep it alive during freezing sub-zero Canadian winters. 👍👍🏝

Amazing garden as usual, and the video production is second to none! I've been growing bananas and pineapples in Ottawa for 12 years or so and am only just getting into palms. Your garden is a great inspiration. Thanks!

The garden looks fantastic! I'm sorry for that red cordyline. The Bougainvillea fits nicely in it's place and it shows what a difference it makes to grow a plant in the soil instead of a pot. Good luck with your winter preparations!

Thank you! I am in a rush to bring in any tender plants. Friday's high is only 8 with a low of -1C high winds and a risk of ice pellets.

Thank you very much! Any exotic plants in the ground stay in the ground through the winter and get covered with cold frames. Any container plants are brought indoors. Thank you very much Sal! The neighbours think its great. Many regular walkers change their route to see the changes in the garden day to day. They tell friends near and far, from B.C. to Nova Scotia to arrange a tour when visiting. They can't believe it's true to see so many exotic plants in Waterloo Region. Cheers.

Always enjoyable to get an update of your garden. Is the tibouchina briefly shown at the beginning of the video in a pot or in the ground? How is it overwintered? I had at least two of these beautiful plants while overwintering indoors, presumably from soil that was too wet. And yes, Mirabilis jalapa are under rated - beautiful plants, especially the tri-color variety. Although I don't leave them in the ground over winter, I do dig up the tubers in the fall, which seems to allow them to grow much larger over summer than plants grown from seed. Your plants are certainly spectacular! Too bad that winter has to come.
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan 2 года назад
Thank you very much Zane! The tibouchina is in a pot and I will over winter indoors. They are tricky with winter watering. I have lost more than one. The Mirabilis do survive in ground in zone 5 if planted close to the house, say within 3-4 ft.

Another awsome video! Thanks!! Can I ask how you store your Alocasias? I had one last year that I was able to store with leaves on in my small greenhouse kept at about 45 degrees. I have a few more this year.
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan 2 года назад
Sound great. Alocasias are best overwintered growing in a warm bright area while Colocasias can be dug up and tubers stored dry in a frost free dark location.

The wids are sure appreciated. I have three brug cuttings rooted in water. I want to get the most out of the growing season this year and it seems to me from your vids is that the best would be to plant into pots and then put the pots into the ground well drained. Longer term goal would be to have them stay in the ground using methoids similar to yours. Im in Vancouver I think 9b
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan Год назад
Thank you for watching. In zone 9B Brugs should require minimal effort. A sizable cold frame and a string of C6 lights when temps drop below 2C. Happy gardening.
@westnewwest4325
@westnewwest4325 Год назад
@@GreenDragan Thank you!!!, Im going to try it, I will use the same style of frame that you use. It is a spot close to the house so it is protected between the house and a large boxwood. Is there any special soil preparation needed other than making sure that the bed is raised up?
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan Год назад
@@westnewwest4325 Brugs are not fussy, but dig in and add several inches of organic matter, compost or manure each year would help.

does the family help you with the garden maintenance and winterizing? I assume adult children would come in handy.
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan Год назад
The gardening obsession is a one man show. My adult children have lives of their own. No-one in my family has any interest in gardening. In past years my wife would hold steady the partially assembled panels for the largest pindo palm while I put up the last piece. I have had to come up with ways to move cold frames and schedule protection as needed. Cheers.

Hi. Do you sell any plants or where do you buy your plants. It's difficult to find most of those plants
@GreenDragan
@GreenDragan 2 года назад
I have collected plants for many years from nurseries all over Ontario and recently online. They are becoming hard to source as nurseries close and big box stores sell more of the same. If I have surplus plants in the spring I would consider having a plant sale if you are in southern Ontario. Cheers.
