Hi having watched the latest video , and would like to make a suggestion! Make the mast foot out of carbon fibre lay up as it will be less liable to wear from movement of the mast under sail. The best thing would be to use aluminium but as you have said, that would.ld be more expensive, however , paying mode now could save more expense later if it does wear and create movement . Another alternative may be to make plug out of hardwood. Just some thoughts !

I made a switch panel from scratch. Got a sheet of perspex, drilled holes , 32 of them ,purchased breakers. Had someone engrave the perspex and had indicator lights. Took quite a while but it worked so was happy. Regarding weather conditions. Time you headed for the Great Barrier Reef via S.E Asia. Never freezes. Can get a little chilly at times but such pleasant sailing. The movie Wind seems to involve Aussies of a rebellious nature. Have never seen the film. Might have to look it up. Hi, I would build this inside mast foot in two parts first so you can get it in and out more easily, starting just with the bottom half and when this is cured take it out and sand its sides so that you get a bevel. Next cover the bottom with packing tape. Now insert this first part upside down into the tape covered mast and laminate the other half. To compress the glass epoxy laminate use an old fender insert and blow up strongly. When you have your first two stable parts glue them together and continue with laminating the inside, you could then also use parts of the iroko laminated in to the part. I would try to get atleast a thickness of 1.5- 2 cm in the pure laminate using the heaviest glass available, like 1000 gr/m² The most importand part will be how to attach this laminated part to the wooden mast base. I would laminate a solid bottom in the part which can the be glued and screwed into the mastbase. Matthias

Looks cold. I am just thinking it has gotten warm enough I can do some epoxying on our dinghy. I don't know as I would worry about the floor colour too much. Clean it as best you can and be happy, it is part of the boat's story. The bottom needs to be clean too. If you are replacing the bottom plates, I would suggest treated plywood for that.... the green stuff used for sheathing on houses. This is much cheaper than marine grade anything and it would have better rot and mold resistance. I am sure there are lots of viewers who would disagree and ask you to spend top dollar on the "right stuff" (what ever that might be). I guess if the stuff thats on there is just stained and not soggy (it is really hard to tell from the video), then sand it up and paint it with bilge paint or deck paint. bilge paint and a good deck/porch/floor paint are basically the same stuff. I use deckcote which is compatible with plastic, resin or wood or whatever but is a Canadian product so maybe not available there (or expensive if it is). There are a lot of outdoor sitting in water products in your local bigbox building store that do not say marine on them or carry the marine price tag, that are just as good or even the same thing with a different label. Have a good one.
@pmnfernando
@pmnfernando 8 месяцев назад
G10 isnt cheap, granted. but if you buy a 50 mm thick piece big enough to accomodate your mast section, all you need to so is to place it underneath it, trace the outline and then use a small hand trimmer to route the channel corresponding to the mast section thickness.(20 mm deep routed channel would be enough imo) be as precise as you can but no need to go crazy, you can always use butyl as a filler and sealant (assuming the mast section as a small hole to get the water out.. G10 will outlive all of us and its a one time repair.i would have even used it for you mast step as it can more than handle the compression forces and again will never, ever, rot. cry once, do it once.

Hello again, Well you're making progress on that floor and the mast too. As I have said I don't know anything about sailboats and their masts but I think you might reconsider that heavy metal insert that you removed from the bottom of the mast. Ok, keep up the good work and I can't wait for warm weather so you can finish the inside epoxy work. Ciao, geo

Hi. I've seen a lot of mast steps in my time and not one of them was made from fiberglass. It will not be strong enough and the first time you are pounding to windward in a seaway the compression forces of the mast will cut through the base of your step. Please follow my original advice and have an aluminum mast step fabricated. It needs to be strong and it needs to be firmly attached to the keel. When you tighten the backstay to put some rake in the mast and tension in the forestay, there will be a lot of forward force at the base of the mast. The step needs to handle that. Your mast step, chain plates and standing rigging are all critical and no place for compromises. A dismasting ruins your whole day. Ask me how I know!

Have you considered replacing them with new plywood and use the old boards as templates to cut out? I'm worried that if those go back in they will be a constant source of bad odour. I think new paint sealed plywood with a layer of vinyl would be a good compromise for them

Might be... It's crazy expensive! Of course we'll get the same shade, easier if a bit darker. We won't do any more varnishing or colouring until the inside boat is painted. We'll have a better idea then. Plus I'm liking a darker floor, with lighter walls it makes sense. Like a RED kitchen!!! 😂🤣😅 Cheers for watching 😃

You 2 are barrelling along, such progress. Marina, talking about old and terrible boat movies, if you like them,, Summer Rental with john Candy is pretty old and pretty terrible. But funny,, 80s movies are great, not so serious.

Why didn't you just make the mast insert out of wood instead of glass?

Why don't you just build a new mast step exactly like the original one by welding up some stainless or aluminium?

@@SailingSeabird just thought I would mention, that I would recommend a marine grade teslin material, this was developed for nuclear submarines so I am sure it will work great above the water line 😁, let me know size in millimeters off each label, colour and the wording you require, anything you require for the boat that’s a label, just ask, would be a pleasure to help you both out.

Is it worth????? NO. Why???? Do the math. Plain and simple: Each of your net worth is a minimum of what hourly? Let's say $30. $60 per hour x 8 = $ 480 per day. Plus: Marina fees. Plus: Transportation fees. Plus: Material costs. Plus: Parts cost. Plus: Living costs. To be realistic. Buying a sea worthy vessel is cheaper. Bonus: You start sailing right away and not wasting time on nonsense. PLUS: The mental draining of a relationship is bare minimum. Wish the best of luck 🤞

You're probably right. But it's fun. Plus very boat needs a little bit of work, at least now we can build it knowing it's all new. Looking at it from our point of view, you have to live somewhere. I've wanted to do an abandoned project for a while. I enjoy it. Plus life it not all about money, if that was the case why would you get a boat in the first. Cheaper and easy to fly everywhere. We're happy doing this project Plus we get to save an old boat. Cheers for watching 😃

The wood at the foot of the mast must surely be a high density type of wood that won't crush under high pressure. Just wondering
