Sail Life - 2020 plan & door frame spring back - DIY sailboat refit 

I just finished the process of making a gingerbread house with my youngest son, then turned on the computer - and received a Sail Life notification. Perfect!

I remain to be convinced by the glassed-in tow rail/gunwale idea. If i can be blunt I imagine it could look kind of chunky and out dated. A spiffy stainless one would look a bit more modern. I'd glass the joint inside and out first of course, could add captive nuts if water ingress is a worry, but bolting hardware through the deck is fairly standard practice. All that said, the quality of your workmanship so far is outstanding, you enjoy working in fibreglass and have a vision of what it'll look like. You do what you want to do and I'll keep enjoying watching you!

It will be sad when the DIY is finished. I watch A LOT of these youtube channels that do what you do. Unfortunately they get done with the DIY stuff and it gets really boring. With few exceptions. Like Sailing Zatara. I will say this is the best DIY boat channel I've watched. I hope you continue to find things in your travels to do that involves boat work.

I think retaining some DIY work to execute while you are cruising is a smart idea. As I suspect you already know, your audience will begin to change once you stop working on the boat full time and start cruising. Not everyone that is currently watching will be interested in the cruising life. Conversely, you may pick up new audience members who don't care to watch glorious sanding. :-) Happy Holidays.

I don't have a boat, but I have the internet and opinions! I think that the way you have decided to simultaniously seal the deck hull joint and build the rail into the boat is really slick. It will be a lot of work, but it will be watertight and look really streamlined.

When you are doing the toe rail to make the hull joint better, you might want to consider also adding a rub rail to the outside. From your outside shot it isn't clear if the topsides bends backwards towards the side of the boat where the deck/topside joint is or not, but you could build out a fairly decent sized rub rail to catch any potential dings. If you are really going to build that toe rail, be sure to leave some spots for water to drain out and for you to put some large cleats (or your Genoa tracks). You might want to take a look at how Amel does their similar toe rail and topsides/deck joint. They are like submarines and never leak and they have basically done what you are contemplating.

Looks like 2020 is gonna be a great year, I also think your plan for the toe rail is the best, it will be work to get it done, and it means tearing up the deck some again, but I think it is a far better idea to have that closed in solid. My boat had the hull to deck joint glassed in solid, and it stays very dry because of it! Thus I can say it will definitely be worth the extra work! Have a safe trip to LA! See you in the new years!

Hi Mads, I think your new plan for the toe rail is much better than the stainless steel contraption! My Acapulco 40 has a beautiful 7 inch bulwark! My only thought is that Wood would be a great deal stronger than foam and require less Glass work. You could still glass it in but a few through bolts would make it bullet proof prior to glassing. Have a wonderful Christmas with Ava, you two should take a day trip up to my town, Ventura, as it is a beautiful little beach town. Cheers
