Yes ! You could make videos full time. You are a natural at it. I can see you having 250,000 subscribers in less than two more years. I'll never stop watching them. Plus I love your wonky humour . Cheers !
Mads, the quality of your filming and story telling has grown in leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Thanks for everything you've shared with us, I look forward to watching everything you put out in 2018.
Mads, I know of course you are done with the hatches and already underway with Eva. But just in case you need to screw something with wood screws or sheet metal screws. I've been working with the same principle of securing wood from rott with EP and wooden screws. Works really fine. Another variation is using threaded inserts in EP with machine screws. No need to use nuts and washers. Threaded inserts have a higher pull out force than the bolt thread has and I do use those from Ensat. There are also some out there named Helicoil, but these are made from spring wires and not suitable for GRP or Wood. Also in metal solid ones are preferred in the super yacht industry. EP works also great as an electric barrier between metals to prevent galvanic corrosion. And not hardened EP can be removed with white spirit or alcohol, also you can wipe down the surface with these to prepare for EP. No need to use Acetone. And definitely no need to sand it when hardened.
Mads; (Not trying to be Capt Obvious but you didn't mention it while explaining the drill/fill/drill method) don't forget to add a light countersink to each bolt hole before you fasten down the hatch. This method makes the sealant squish into a gasket around the bolt. That is step 2 after epoxy filling the oversized holes, many people call it 'epoxy potting'.
I guess im randomly asking but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account..? I was stupid lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Thatcher Amari i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Put a stick across the hatch opening against the underside of the deck. Then tie your strings around that. The wind wouldn’t be able to move the cover then.
You need a motorized screwdriver. Will save tons of time. Make sure you get one with an adjustable clutch so it doesn't strip out the delicate screw holes.
The hatch opening forward lets more air into the boat at anchor more than opening facing rearward. More air or less air, those are the options. Cheers!
Mads, Also related to the drill/fill/drill method is that the use of a Dremel with a #115 bit to hollow out the core material between the two skins is a better way to seal the core than the way that you are outlining. The entire process is detailed here: www.pbase.com/mainecruising/sealing_the_deck
Hi, two tips: don't hang power tools from their cables, use for example the base plate of the jigsaw. And tread yourself with some velcro cable ties (5€ for a 10 pack at the stage audio supply). With these you can coil the cables faster and you avoid sharp angles. Cheers, Andi
Drill two small holes about 10cm apart approx central to your temporary hatch covers and thread some string or cord through leaving a loop down below and leave a knot on both ends topside. Take a length of scrap wood slightly longer than the hatch dimension and pass through the loop and twist until tight enough to hold down the boxes - sort of Spanish windlass method. Quick and easy to tighten and undo. Have a great holiday and keep up the great job through 2018.
Your raised hatch mounts is an the blue water boats. Have some fitted covers made with grommets. These keep sideways water from getting inder the seal. Boats dont have to be leaky....thats for lazy sailors.
Another great video. holy cats a thousand dollars for a hatch, I been in wrong business. That is totally unreal. 10 bucks worth of aluminum and 20 bucks worth of plastic and 100 bucks of poly. Well Merry Christmas to hatchmakers.
Merry Christmas Mads. I'm happy for you that your YT channel is doing so well - but it's not just luck. You do a really nice job. I''d like to know where you studied English that you know about words like "nads". Your English is better than most people I know here in the US. Good luck with wrapping up those hatches this coming week. Ron
From Holland I'm following your jobs all year. Interesting to see you set aside a lot for this beuatifull yacht. Hope you get enough viewers soon to make these videos for a living. Mary Christmas to all viewers !!
Mads, Merry Christmas to you. I don't comment often but have been watching your channel since almost the beginning. Keep up the great work, your channel is great and your tenacity and dedication to our dream is an example to all.
Merry Christmas ! And thank YOU for all the great thought provoking info, DIY demos and last but not least, the laughs. "Mother Nature always there to kick you in the nads!" My new go to weather phrase ;)
Merry Xmas !! You could ask Santa to put some weight on top of Athena‘s hatch boxes. Suppose a plate with cookies and a glas of Whiskey should settle the deal.
If you had just set your hatch frame into the hole, the ridge above deck would have made your wood hatch covers stay over the hatch opening unless the wind flipped them up. The hanging tools would and did look after that possibility. This is just another suggestion from one of those armchair quarterbacks you get from time to time. Merry Xmas and I enjoy your videos.
Another "drill & fill" method I like to do that saves a few steps is to use a Forstner bit to drill the oversized hole down to, but not through the bottom skin. Fill with epoxy, let cure, then drill the final bolt hole, and drill a taper in the top skin for better sealant adhesion. No double drilling for the oversized hole, no taping bottom hole, and the epoxy bonds to the bottom skin as well as the core. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas and prosperous new year that next year is equal or even better than this ... from Venezuela a big hug and all the blessings for all yours
Merry Christmas!!! It’s such a treat to watch your posts. I too have refitted a sailboat. It took two years. It was lots of fun. It will all be worth it in the end. I really love my boat. Refitting her was just a joy.
Panties up in a bunch, love it...classic. In the UK we say knickers in a twist but liking the bunch idea... Have a good one Mads and here's to a wonderful 2018. Andy
Marry Christmas / Glædelig Jul Mads 🎄🎄🎄 To avoid the cover for the hatches moving you could put something really heavy, that can handle water, on top of it. :)
Happy Christmas to you and Jökull. As a single liveaboard who depends on RU-vid as a TV replacement, you are definitely one of the highlights of the week :)
I'm very pleasantly surprised to see a video from you today. Merry Christmas! Give your furry friend a good scratch behind the ears for us and have a great night. 😎
Mads, I got some cool sail life swag from my brother for christmas (we both watch every week). I now that I have the proper attire I guess I now need to start refurbishing my own sailboat.
I hope you enjoy the Vetus's but I'm thinking you'd be happier just making your own. Doesn't have to metal. Nice wood frames (I'd paint them), a piece of fancy plastic or glass, some hinges and dogs, a rubber bottom seal - and you're good! OK, you will need a nice raised "shelf" inside the hatch tops, but that's doable, right? (I'll make a photo of an example if you want.) Also, make the hatches open facing forward - you'll be glad at anchor. Also - no washing machine!
Merry Christmas Mads! Thanks for the interesting and informative vids!! Funny, now you’re cursing the wind but, when you’re under sail, you’ll be begging for it!!!
Merry Christmas! Love your channel! After doing our own refit on our Cheoy Lee it’s fun to watch someone else fulfill their dream. The end result is well worth the effort and you will know your boat so well she will feel like a part of you.
Merry Christmas Mads! Congratulations on the success of your channel, your refit progress and your personal life in 2017. We can't wait to see what happens with 2018. On s/v SYRAH we had to replace the forward hatch, which was mounted opening aft (hinges forward), but we chose to mount the new Lewmar one opening forward to scoop wind when at anchor and cool the boat down on our future tropical voyages. Cheers from Victoria BC Canada!
Happy Christmas (belatedly) your attention to detail never fails to amaze me, I hope that some of it rubs off as I have work to do on my boat when the temp gets above 5c . Best wishes for 2018 Wilf
Hej og gladelige jul! Never seen a channel that up to date - so cool. More wind coming: 40 kts in forecast. I’m doing an Elan 40 myself which quite badly hit a rock, located near you in northern Germany. ‘Like your quality 👍🏼 of videos.
Fröh Weihnachten! Im normally in the sf bay area but am currently outside of Frankfurt. I would sure love to come help! My wife and I love your channel! Keep up the excellent work! ps love the Ave references! You both rock!
