He snores?? I didn't think he can get any more adorable. :) That is seriously the most adorable puppy i've seen in years. And no, i don't think you're being paranoid, just careful. Paranoid would mean you'd hire a patrol sized boat to shadow you guys in case of emergency. Making sure you've covered at least one axis in case of emergency is common sense.

Another great video - Thanks again Madds! We really do appreciate all of the info. I hope to see a review of that PFD - I was following right along when I saw you trying to put the PLB into the PFD - everything looked familiar, but when you manually inflated the PFD for the demo, well I don't remember seeing a PFD quite like that before. I'm still gathering my kitty and hoping to hit the Gulf of Mexico full time in about 3 years- that is why learning all I can now is of so much help. Thanks again!

Mads, always use a pump to manually inflate your lifejacket. Breath introduces moisture to the inside, which is not a good idea! Lights look like a great idea though!

Thanks for the very in depth review. You certainly did your research relative to the support each device would have. You are not being paranoid....you are preparing for the worst. That is prudent. It also means that my being prepared "Murphys Law" states you will never need to use any of it!

Excellent video, I have seen the RescueMe advertised but never really appreciated how small it is. Of course, in a less dire emergency you can send a descriptive message with the Inreach too (to your shore contact to pass on rather than GEOS). Lastly, I have spent this week in Denmark (leaving tomorrow) and must say that I have been treated with exceptional hospitality. I had been worried that I didn't speak a work of Danish - but that seems to be no problem. All of the Danish people I met were super helpful - a very nice country (good to hear you trust the search and Rescue too!).

Hi Mads, I've been following your channel for a while and I really appreciate your product reviews. I especially like how you include explanations of what things are (i.e. epirb & PLB) and how they work. For someone who has been lake sailing and close coastal cruising for several years, many of those types of items are only slightly familiar to me. But I'm in the process of refitting an Alberg 30 for extended cruising so many of the products you review will someday need to be in my inventory. Your explanations are great. In fact shortly after you did the video about the DeLorme InReach SE, ActiveCaptain had a Defender First special on the InReach SE & Explorer. Thanks to your video, I felt confident in purchasing the Explorer even though it will be a few years before I really need it. Keep up the great work, stay safe on your Atlantic crossing, and if you ever find yourself in Utah, shoot me an email, I'd love to take you out on the Great Salt Lake (if we ever get more water). --Chip

+TheSpartanKingReece That would be awesome! I had a hard time figuring out whether or not PLBs are actually supported in all SAR zones. I read somewhere that wasn't the case but I was unable to figure out what happens if you activate a PLB in a SAR zone that doesn't support PLB's. I know some countries have odd regulations or procedures when it comes to PLB's (like Brazil). Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated :)

According to what I've read about the McMurdo FastFind PLB the distress signal is routed through the country the PLB is registered in. I'm not sure it's the same for the Ocean Signal Rescue ME but I'd imagine that's the case since they use essentially the same technology.

Hi Mads, Glad to see you are carrying a PLB... I have a ACR unit but yours looks a little more compact. Glad you have done the research and I love those Lume-On lights, they look really good and compact compared to the strobe I carry. If you need any reassurance as to why you should be carrying a PLB google "Andrew Taylor Clipper yacht race"

Hi Mads, I was curious about your comment about "programming the MMSI number'" into both the epirb and plb. As I understand it, there is no actual programming to do in the unit regarding the MMSI. The unit has a special ID number and when you register it, the MMSI number is linked to this ID number in the SAR database. I believe this is true of epirbs but may be different for plbs.
@rebaserein974
@rebaserein974 8 лет назад
You should be careful with PLB and the line you attached. Since you have automatic PFD, it will inflate the PFD when you go to the water and the bang is hard and it might break the line if it is stuck somewhere. Maybe it is not a problem, but that's what came in mind if I looked at the position of the PLB and the line and the tape on the line...think about it...

For coastal voyages, it is better to use MOB1. He will give a DSC alarm signal to the radio station and coordinates to the AIS device to your captain. He only needs to turn the yacht and follow the mark on the monitor. The fastest rescue! PLB1 is good in the ocean, but salvation will be long. If you just drop overboard in bad weather. The device will not be able to coordinate your captain in any way. Unfortunately. And besides, the yacht always has EPIRB, why should it be duplicated by another device ?

Hey Mads,Thank you for the great reviews. You did say that the spinlock lights were about $20 US however you didn't say anything about the cost of the PLB. I think that adding the cost of the items in the review really help complete the full picture. Thank you for your videos and all the reviews you do. How about doing a review on your PFD?

+Don Harden Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment :) I'll certainly do my best to remember to add the price in any future reviews. I know this video is from quite a while ago, but assuming these Lume-on lights were that in-expensive I might be inclined to go a little overkill and attach a second pair of these doubling the light output. and I would imagine the brighter the better.
@timb171

I emailed Ocean Signal to get a confirmation on how the distress signal is routed, here's the cut and paste from the reply. " Your PLB1 sends a signal to the satellite system, This is received by ground stations who will confirm the signal and immediately forward to the SAR in the country the beacon is coded for (and registered). The SAR will then do what is necessary through your emergency contacts to confirm the alert and follow up. As soon as a position is established, wither from the GPS being available in the signal or from other information, the event will be transferred to the region the alert is from. " Hope this helps clarify. It looks to me like my initial impressions were correct in that it works the same way as the Fast Find, so it's the Search and Rescue in your home country who instigate/coordinate any rescue operation from the SAR nearest to the distress signal. atb from sunny Derbyshire, Tim o/

Great review of these. I agree, the process behind the button push is critical. You don't want to find yourself having to use it and wondering if someone is "in today" at the "emergency response shack". Your dog (jorkle SP?) seems to have acclimated well to life aboard Obelix. Nice to see. Does he have his own PFD and PLB? :-)

+craigleemehan I'm very pleased with my Spinlock Deckvest 5D so far :) Fingers crossed I won't ever need the hood! I think you are breaking lots of SAR rules by programming a PLB with your boats MMSI. I have two MMSI's for my vessel and for my portable DSC vhf radio. The vessel one is for the vhf, hf and ais. And the portable one is disassociated with the vessel ( in the tender etc). Your vessel is in Denmark yet by you doing what you have done by programming a Danish MMSI into a Plb and expecting it to be recorded in Portugal is simply setting you up for any report received to be treated as an error and be ignored as an error. IT I S A VERY BAD IDEA for you to promote a breach of the international GMDSS system because you think that Danish authorities are better than Portuguese authorities. It's one thing to risk your live doing such a foolish thing but you should not encourage other people to do such a thing. Please Talk with the Danish authorities about what you have done before suggesting others follow your lead. I have both the Plb and the spin lock pfd and they are great

What you say makes sense and the reply someone got from Ocean Signal confirms that I think. I was surprised they the unit was able to be re programmed and that someone actually did it. I have one and registration asks for the UIN and Serial number and the unit was purchased in the UK so the routing will be via the UK. Not something to play around with reprogramming devices if that is not the correct procedure.
