Ep125. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we take our son Jake to an Island we have been to before, Main Duck Island. The Island is obviously a misnomer because we never see any Ducks but you can't go 10 feet without seeing a snake. That is the whole reason Jake really wanted to come sailing with us. Not because he enjoys sailing, which he doesn't, but because he loves snakes and we promised him that he would be blown away by how many snakes are on this Island. I always call this Island "Snake Island" and you will see why after you see this episode.

I love an overnighter at Duck island. Last time we were there the gang rearranged the docking to give us space and threw a great mini "Burning man" festival ! Sailors can be a crazy bunch once isolated from the mainland! Great content here by the way!

Consider it my public service announcement. Don't dock at Main Duck Island and expect to see any ducks. The snakes must have ate them all. Not a single duck to be seen. LOL

It was a long winter. We cant wait for the summer. Let hope it is much warmer and drier than last summer. We want to be able to swim a lot more and we didn't use our floaty chairs even once last season. It was just too cold to sit half submerged in the water drinking and floating last year.

I visited there, loads of wild strawberries. Kept waiting for an easterlie storm too come through and be on my way. Stayed for 4 days, with all the boaters.No idea about the snake infestation until i saw a massive what looked to me to be a coral snake and beelined it back to the boat, never too venture out on the island again.

It looked like you sailed out of Treasure Island Marina. From what I remember sailing from there last summer anyway. Nice marina. We enjoyed our stay on our Siren 17. You weren't kidding snakes! My wife would kill me if I took her there.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 6 лет назад
Ha Ha. Ya my wife is not afraid of anything. She is cut from a unique cloth. It was Treasure Island. This year we are moving our boat to be moored out of Portsmouth Olympic Harbour in downtown Kingston. It should be great being out of there. Treasure Island is sort of in the middle of nowhere.

Nice footage of a beautiful island! Thank you for sharing. I also would love to explore this island to see the snakes. A few things I want to point out though. At 10:55, that's another Eastern Garter. At 11:48, I got a good laugh! That was close, glad she didn't get bit lol. At 12:55, that's an Eastern Milksnake (Lampropeltis triangulum). Corn Snakes do not occur in Ontario.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 3 года назад
Thanks. I know nothing about snakes and prefer to not really even tough them so I am clueless about which snake is which. Jake could have been making up random names for the snakes and I would have believed him. ha ha. Janice was really lucky to not have had her face bitten. Close call.
@mdorris71

Jake is at home there. Very cool. Interested in how the late arrival worked out. With all the wind and fetch from the North he would have to go into Schoolhouse Bay. One or maybe two boats can anchor there on a very short scope and tie off to land. Otherwise you would all be forced to allow him to raft off you at dock. At 7pm there isn't anywhere else to go unless you send him/her out into the lake at night.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 6 лет назад
He tried to anchor and then tie his stern to the dock. But that didn’t work. So he ended up just anchoring in that little bay beside the docks. I’m not sure what his draft was but I am pretty sure the way he was swinging and then stopping he was hitting bottom. At least in there it’s all mud so he wasn’t doing any damage to his keel.

Hi Graig! Funny thing about Snake Island... Last week I was not so far from you (LA, CA) so to speak and we went to visit, upon the continuous request from my elder Son a snake museum... Wasn't so proud demonstrating my "Daddy's-there-so-no-worry-son-everything-will-be-alright" posture.... I definitively got a negative attitude toward these animals... Back today on safe ground... Regards from Beijing. Bruno

People tend to fall into 2 groups. People like Jake falls in a smaller group that love snakes. And I fall into the other bigger group that can definitely do without them. 😜. I’m ok watching them from a distance. But to grabbing and holding. 😳

You mean like drink and socialize on other people's boats? Sundowners etc? We love doing that and if you watch our first season on the Ottawa River, we did that all the time. Being our first season on the St Lawrence, we really didn't have that many close friends in the area and the waterway is soooo huge that you never seem to meet up with boats you know. Everyone heads off at different times in different direction. The Ottawa River was easier to socialize because we all ended up at the same 2 or 3 anchorages over and over so we knew everyone. But Yes we do love to hang out and SoSAILize with people.
