This boat was a 26 ft Spacesailer. Entering the northern end of Moreton Bay Qld after some heavy weather. His engine was not working and the wind was down, they drifted onto a sandbank. His wife was below and was pregnant. The boat did not sink and was towed to Mooloolaba where his wife had the baby next week. I was there when it was towed in. A rescue boat was also flipped in the same seas.
And THAT my friends is why a full keel monohull is the ONLY sailboat to travel in blue water. They right themselves. If that was a Cat or Trimaran, the ending would not have been as happy.
@@dontrump9769 yeah, he clearly had plenty of water flowing over the rudder to provide steerage. Poor guy clearly has no helm response and the forsail is acting like a sea anchor, but not in a good way.
i found myself in a very similar situation. engine failed, i had to cut the genny off, threw out a drogue (sea anchor) went below and had a good sleep. woke up and all calm. for the price of a drogue i dont know why people dont carry them always. then again when things go wrong it happen very quickly.

I am not a fan of the music, but this video is educational, I am planning to travel the ocean great distances and after seeing these it makes you think at how powerful the ocean can be, I will need a large boat.
good demo of how small sailboats can survive quite a beating and keep people inside safe, if they just keep themselves from getting tossed into things. I was annoyed by the announcer trying to add drama by saying the overturned rescue boat was likely to sink at any moment...it has too much flotation built-in. I demonstrated the same thing in my aluminum runabout when it got caught by a merchant vessel wake. It didn't flip, just totally filled with water breaking over the stern.

@dadeciver111 It is funny because he dosen't appear to be trying to turn into the wave or turn to run with the wave. Instead he stays put and takes it broadside.
I think this happened at the Forster Bar (mid North Coast NSW) about 8 years ago. Saw it on the news. He survived and was rescued by a helicopter but the boat was stuffed.
I agree, thats pretty dangerous. Theyre meant to have the bow to the wave but smaller vessels get tossed around a fair bit in those high winds never mind the waves!
@bvanle13 most likely not, it is more likely to keep upright with the bow facing the wave. If he was facing the shore and the wave hit him from behing (so to speak) it would have been difficult for him to stay straight.
If the waves don't get you I hear that occasionally containers are a real danger in the ocean, If the weather wasn't dangerous enough, imagine a container weighing tons bobbing in the water smashing a hole in your hull .

Storm sails do exist, They are very small and cause less rig stress when in squalls. Though the best tactic in heavy weather, is to use a drogue/sea anchor, and have the boat point stern first into the waves. Using the engine to power through the waves will cause lots of stress to the engine as it has to power up the side of the wave, and then overspeed on the way back down. Typically sailing engines are low powered (5 or 10 hp) in comparison to a motorboat.
I have found about a hundred comments of people hating on the song, and not one person is like "what happened to the guy waving at the beginning of the video?"
@105inspector its because the original song the person put with the video was removed because of copyright or infringement reasons and youtube basically substitutes this one in :)
@wimthuiswerker sailing ships like that would be fine in conditions like that, had he been heading into the wave without a broken sail!! anytype of boat will get munged up if hit on the side of such a wave. the difference between a yacht and motor boat? the motor boat wont right itself, the yacht will.
why do people leave the sails up during a storm? i would stow the sail and use the motor to head into the waves. It's of note that i don't know a thing about sailing.
Wouldn't the anchor be torn off? What would have happened if he had just gone inside the boat (after lowering the sails). I think these boats don't sink easily.
IF this is the one in california he survived and stayed with the boat. goes to show how good yachts are compared to power boats of the same size AND how valuable harnesses and tethers are!
Reasons to keep your wash boards in, keep the hatches closed, wear your lifejacket and clip on... number 1. It's hard to tell from the video, but it looks to me like he failed to do any of the above. Scary stuff.

I start to feel that these guys are actually chasing for videos with this song, it's like everywhere you go it's the same users complaining about the song :)
Have you read Seaworthiness: The Forgotten Factor by Czesław Marchaj? His research suggests that a rounder wine glass hull profile, the opposite of what you suggest would have made this avoidable. The wider beam you propose makes the boat more responsive to the wave face, ultimately allowing the boat to trip over its own rail on the wave face. Imagine a ballested barrel with a round profile. Although it might rock significantly, it would never catch an edge on the wave face and would never flip. Capsizing like this is the result of the combined forces of gravity pulling the boat down the wave face and hydrodynamic resistance of the deck once it is below water.
In the moment, maybe a sea anchor to take the wave on the stern. Otherwise, engine maintenance (assuming engine failure) to provide steerage and maneuverability to head into the waves and get out of there or in combination with the sea anchor to head in.
