This week, we are mounting the keel, aligning it and then finishing off the inside with Gelcoat. She is beautiful on the inside again. Thanks for following, Cheers, Chris and Tanja
Looking better than she did when she left the factory ......... It's been an interesting journey to see this repair and in particular, the skills of the repair shop.
Thanks Karl, appreciate comments like these. She will look great when polished up again. Actually Patrik is doing the filming for me, he is a great guy. Cheers, Chris
@@SailingAurora Well, then, it goes double, eh? He's letting us all watch him work, and he's going through the effort of setting it up. Anyway, the boat looks great, and I'm pleased it looks like she'll be ready to sail again, soon.
When you feel you have to take your shoes off to inspect the repair work on your grid, you know that the man who done the work takes pride in his craftsmanship. Be happy, be safe.
Chris, I was starting to miss your weekly update then as usual on a Friday popped up!! Auroa is looking great again, what a quality job, very smart and perfect timing for beginning of season.
Hi Jon, I hope you are doing well over in Hamble, I'm missing the UK more and more at the moment. I haven't been back since the last normal Southampton boat show :( For the boat repair, perfect timing indeed. I really can't wait to get sailing again. Cheers Pal
What an undertaking. Used to do most things myself, but whaoooo... no ... big no no doing something like this. They are really professionals. And as usual, so nice to see professionals do their job :-) ... Thank you for letting us join in and watch the process.
I am a boatbuilding professional and can say that these repair videos are the most informative ones i have ever met in youtube. Detailed descriptions of repair work can be shown as educational videos for boatyards. Hope all will be good. Cheers.
My boat has been in the same shop (in 2020) doing equal job with the keel and inside of the boat. I was super satisfied with the result. In addition the also took care of a few damages outside of the hull. In total 4 weeks job.
Your channel is absolutely amazing! The information, presentation and content is second to none. Humble, brilliant, passionate owner/sailors, your future is so bright only the sun can compete. Aurora, she is now a beauty and a beast!
@@ChasingLatitudes We also have a boat. A year ago we also had a damage. A guy with great experience did the gelcoat repairs. He took much more than an hour to get the material matching to our boat. Half the time I was not able to see the differences, that bothered him. After his work you could not locate the spots he repaired.
What a journey.... I have a smile from ear to ear after that episode! It is kind of ridiculous when you think about it but I am just so genuinely happy about how it’s going for you both😀. It’s been a long road from the emotion of the first trip to see the boat at the Hanse Factory to the joys of her first sailing trips to the question of possibly selling and then the grounding, now the ‘Rocky’ style comeback....... this sailing channel has it all😂
Thank you so much Paul. It has been a long rocky road, but hopefully we will be able to continue without having to charter Aurora, so that the future will a long smooth sail. Take care and stay safe, Chris & Tanja
Hey, Chris congratulations, and looks great thank you for the weekly updates!! I am buying a Hanse 315 or 345 next year and your channel has been amazing for information, education as well as inspiration! All the best!
Hi Tood. Thank you so much for the kind words, glad that you have found the channel useful! Good luck with buying your own Hanse, so exciting. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
Overwhelmingly positive! The episodes are like going to visit a friend who is recovering from a broken bone faster than expected. She looks so healthy. Looking at the structure, it seems so logical, correct. Patrick should start making the videos since you guys will soon have a perfect boat with no problems. I hope your luck holds for future voyages. Consult a Voodoo Doctor and have him put an "anti grounding spell" on her.
HI, thanks very much appreciated. Sorry so late to reply. Patrick has started an instagram account called professional_boat_repairs, go check him out. So far the summer for us has been really good, thanks. More content coming soon
Wow, I'm completely impressed with the progress... Please have a beer (or two) with Patrick... my only concern is that I have to wait another week for more updates.
@@SailingAurora Its a craftmenswork In Swedish its Hantverk dunno the englishword for It :) It does looks great ;) She is at Svinninge? That isnt so damn far from where we live.. Only about 129 Km :)
Chris.. amazing to see all the work.. what was the insurance company you got .. I have to have it! in my future boat ;) Can you share some light into the insurance stuff? cheers
Hi Miguel, insurance is with Atlantica, they have been really good. Works pretty much the same as any other insurance, the premium depends on where you are sailing, size and value of the boat and whether you are chartering it or not. The insurance providers have preferred repair centers incase you have an accident and these repairs are regularly inspected by independent surveyors also :) I hope this helps
Hi, I have been reading an article in a boating magazine this weekend about someone loosing his mast at sea, the hook that connects the stays with the mast was broken due to metal fatigue. They specifically mentioned that boats that have run aground should replace these hooks, since the rigging takes a serious beating as well when grounding. I thought I mention this to you, since your mast is down and it should be relatively easy to replace. Not sure if your boat uses this methode with hooks as well, but apparently the damage can be invisible to the eye. Good luck with your efforts getting the boat ready. Eric
Hi Eric. Thank you so much for your comment. This is definitely something that we need to look into with the rigger, so again big thanks for the heads up! Take care and stay safe, Chris & Tanja
Hi Chris, your videos relay help mei I am an amateur boat builder, and progress had come to keel fixing time. in this video keel attaching body with water sealing like silicone, my question is keel caring car moving and keel keep stay fix on the body, , time 11:45 in this case nuts has to be tightened, but following screens when you were in boat nuts not on screw.. it is just editing problem when you are preparing video or there is something fix the keel on the body?
Hi Yuksel, Great that the vidoes are helping you, I'm happy for that. I'm not sure if I understand the question but first the keel needs to match the shape of the hull, for this a fibreglass compound/filler needs to be applied, during this process two bolts are screwed on the keel, the front and the back one, this keeps the keel in place while the compound dries. You can see the rear bolt attached briefly at 16:54. Once this this is done the keel can then be lowered again, the sikaflex can be applied and then the boat can be lowered onto the keel again into it's final position. I hope this helps, Cheers, Chris
@@SailingAurora ok,after i wrote the above message,I watched once and I catched the subjects, Most probably I will face to similar situation ,I noticed. Thank you very much for detail response,
Hi there. Yes, they are really paying attention to details. They have a really good reputation, so people come from all over the country (even from other nordic countries) to have their boat repaired here. Very busy place. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
Hi there. Yes i really looks great. Maybe not completely necessary, but the workshop makes the repair so it looks at close to the original as possible. It's also a way to ensure that the boat is preserving as much of its value as possible, by making it look like the rest. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
Hi sailing Aurora she looking Good Patrick is the Main Man glad you found the Best. Did or will you put a Good Luck Coin under the Mast again? Take Care
Hi Gregory. Thank you, yes Patrick is the Main Man! Thank you for sharing the tradition of the good luck coin under the mast. Had never thought about it, but we will definitely do that - we need some luck! All the best, Chris & Tanja

I think a found two Sailboat Internet Friends an in closing thanks an God Bless you to Two. Greg of Ohio
So nice job, extremely well done! I have more or less the same damages after grounding with my 40ft boat and unfortunately I do not have full Casco insurance, must pay from my pocket. Do you know approximate price of the job done please? Thank you and good luck!
Hi Stanislav. Thank you, we are also very happy with the result, and that we can now see an end to this. So gutted to hear about your boat and the insurance situation. The latest update on the cost is €42,000 (this includes 25% VAT). We wish you all the best of luck with your repair and hope you will be sailing again soon. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
@@SailingAurora Hello Chris and Tanja, thank you so much for your attention to my modest person. The cost is.....pricey!!!! I had more or less quotation here in the South of France. It is a good lesson for the people which having no insurance(me included). I wish you good luck!
Just wondering if you are putting those plastic thru hull valves in a area where they will be safe from thing that might fall on them, they have a tendency to break pretty easily. check out Sailing Zingaro, his boat had those, not a good outcome. your boat is looking great and will be better than factory new.
Hi Steven. Our new thru hull valves are composite, and from our research we believe that they are very strong. Yes, thank you, we are very happy with the result of the repair. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
As the owner said to me re the galley when he said kitchen . I don't really care what its called !! Won't be long before the boat is back for more repairs with his knowledge of yachts etc
Don't believe that the right terminology for galley and head is the most important, and it definitely does not say anything about our ability to sail and manoeuvre a yacht. The grounding that caused this repair was not our doing. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
Hi Chris. Yes, it might be seem unnecessary, but we still want it to look nice and match the original part of the grid. This is also standard with the repair, that the colour is matched with the original. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
@@SailingAurora ah right that makes sense. I suppose colour matching for experts is no trouble as well. Thanks for sharing the video it was interesting.
If you have to change the sea co. any way I seriously would change the plastic ones with metal ones after watching James at Zingaro. Especially because your vessel will sail in below zero degree areas.
I believe the through hulls are TruDesign composite, not plastic. There appears to be a consensus amongst Hanse owners that the DZR seacocks behind them should be replaced with Tru Design too. Never heard anyone recommending going the other way (from DZR to "plastic") before.
Mate don’t use the plastic seacocks. Watch SV Zingaro he just had brand new plastic seacocks, one broke on him and nearly sunk his boat. Just recently, now he’s promised to remove all 15 of his plastic seacocks back to brass.. I’m not a professional, but I’d rethink the plastic.. just my opinion, but that’s all I have as a commenter. But mate the boat looks bloody beautiful... so solid.. well done team..
Sorry mate, Jeremy’s right I wrote this message before watching the next video of zingaro, he did have a transducer fail not the plastic thru hole. Apologies..
Hi Martin. Understand, but the surface needs to be nice and smooth and the company will always try and get the finish of the repair as close to the original as they can. This also helps to preserve/maintain the value of the boat. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
Could be but I wasn't complaining. I think it helps to get the surface very level so that the floor boards are nice and flush to the surface. If you don't spray you probably will end up with different heights and thicknesses.
Shame the boat was not built properly in the first place ? I would be thinking well if this is the quality of the build what else will fail ???? oh and I hope the builders paid for this work ?? if not why not as it will be your ins premium that rockets after this job .
Hi Howard. There was not a problem with the quality of the boat. If you go back to episode 36, you will see that the boat was grounded when on charter. We were told that the grounding was at low speed, but the damages showed that it couldn't have been at low speed, and we later found out that it had a hard grounding, big rock, at 5.5 knot. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
@@SailingAurora Ok now with respect having looked at TS4 as cannot find 36 you are standing there saying yourself its like they don't care ?? the finish ?/ etc and then there you are with yet another problem with the mast furling gear Now that should have sent alarm bells ringing ? New boat etc and look at all the things that you are finding .Now if the yard repairing her has had to bond the grid in as they have it means it was not built properly Sorry to say this but its true . The repair yard has done it as it should have been built so it withstands vertical force up and down as happens in stranding such as yours. Had the weather been rough which am sure it was not that keel would have ripped off . Enjoy the next season and safe sailing
@@howardbeer5214 In TS4 I was referring to the things that could have been finished off easily for the boat yard and not the full build quality of the boat. If the boat had not grounded it would have been strong enough. The sail jam was caused by user error, it was as simple as that. The first time was caused by me with the boom too high on the roll in and the second time with the charterers as they tried to pull out the sail by using the roll out instead of the outhaul. I can understand why you have jumped to conclusions here. As for the damage after the grounding, Ii'm pretty sure a lot of boats would have suffered extensive damage with a full stop grounding on a rock at 5.5 knots. If you think the keel was close to falling off you are very much mistaken. The keel was no where near coming off and Hanse even state they have never lost a keel. The structure around it was however compromised. BR Chris
@@SailingAurora Ok I give up You did not read or understand what I have said . Why did the repair yard glass the grid into like they did if the original build spec was ok ?? As I said the repair is the way it should have been built in the first place. These grids coming away are all to common with new builds today . Having been on the water for almost 60 years sailed here there everywhere when not at sea as Master of a commercial vessel I have seen this damage all to often and its all down to quick and cheap for the builder and personally I feel its dangerous and could cost someone their life BR Howard Good luck this season
It’s good to see a professional doing this work and get explanations of his process but weird that the ‘how to’ tone of the amateur presenter. I wish inexperienced sailing RU-vidrs would leave teaching to professionals.
Hi Christopher, well you will just have to take it for what it is. Unfortunately there are not too many professional boats builders that are also YouTubing, so I did my best to convey some knowledge. I cannot compare myself to a professional, but I do get my hands dirty too sometimes
Why all the effort to remove the orange peel texture from spraying and rolling gel coat? The bilge is well ... the bilge; not the shinny smooth visible exterior like hullside.
Hi Dave. The top of the grid needs to be smooth and level for the floor to sit on top and be level. And it is also for the aesthetics, so it looks the same as the original grid. Cheers, Chris & Tanja
