well, at the beginning i cry because i was part of the team who built Duracell (first name "catch the spirit") and see you cutting all these parts 😭😢 but Matt you did a great job !!! congatulations !!
Ive been watching this project for a few months, This video really encompasses a lot of work. Wow!!! You should be really proud of the work you’ve accomplished. Pretty incredible.
To see a years worth of progress in 12 minutes, it's astonishing to see how far you've come. This is rapidly turning into my favorite RU-vid channel. This and Tally Ho could not be two more different boats, but watching them both get built is the coolest thing ever. Thank you.
Jeez! The short answer is wow!!! Chokes me up a little that the legendary race boat is no more but glad you are doing your dream and inspiring some of the wee sailors to think outside the box....
I have watched from the start and had forgotten just how much work you have done to the transformation this far. Great recap and amazing progress. Sailing NV splashed and I know you guys follow each other..at least a bit. That’s gotta be motivating. Your build is more involved but I love both your projects. I am enjoying the journey. Thanks for sharing it!!❤😊
My wife and I are deep into a similar but larger build (ours had a fire). We are using different methods but I appreciate your patience and organization.
This is a massiv undertaking. I hope you can get the financing to get help building this and to afford the material. Otherwise it could take years. I enjoy watching the Videos of course, but sometimes I wonder if the other builders don’t get sick of their project. SV Seamer has been building for 10 years, Arabella for 5.
congratulations and thank you for bringing this legendary sailor and his boat back to life here in France, it's soon the start of the rum route solo race your sailboat is part of our legend congratulations
Well crew! this is going to lovely stored fruit for those of us who put the boats up for five months in the NE USA. We will let the snow fly, stock the book shelves with winter reading, and follow along dreaming of the day that the ice leaves and the boats float again! Thank you for doing all the work it takes to share this journey!
I’ve been following along since you started the project. I have no idea why because I don’t know the first thing about boats like yours but it just captures my attention so much watching the transformation. I’m really looking forward to the future videos.
Nice Review of the process and progress I got pretty stressed the second year of the refit 😅with weather delays affecting the topside refinish BUT it all came together and made it in the water 💦
its kind of funny i saw this video and realized we had the same dream i restored and am currently sailing/racing solo my 30ft Peterson sailboat that i restored and re-fitted by myself, it always makes me smile when i see these videos knowing people are following the same path
It's really nice to see this summary and seeing the boat come together although i've been watching since almost the very beggining. When it's done you should make sort of a timelapse of it changing, that'd be really cool if you have such stills.
That reinforcement in the stern for the chain plates seems nice and strong. I’m curious though whether you’ll have swept-back spreaders or not. I’m guessing you’re still looking for a rig, so maybe you don’t know yet, but the extra aft support is kind of a nice feature of sweapt-backs, and will keep some of the pressure off the backstay(s).
Great transom design. Having lived with a reverse transom and having lost almost every kind of tool and personal item over board courtesy of it, I vote for your design.
Beautiful job, guys! It is going to be an absolutely beautiful boat when your done due to the hull extension and new doghouse...you've changed the look a lot.
Hi guys wow what a transformation Duracell looks so much better for a cruising yacht thanks for the video , Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia from the big island 😊😊😊
we think they have a very nice looking boat too. Plus, it's our understanding that they are building out a more comfy interior now that they are on the water.
I am following the project from start & admire your craftmanship. I think why I watch is to see how you handle MONSTROUS tasks without stress and with ease I also have a suggestion, I think you should edit&add "timelapse" to our video title - in example: "Sailboat Refit Timelapse". This will bring more followers to support and admire the project. Cheers.
You are really nailing it! We love your design of the dog house and all the detail that have gone into making it fit well. We can't wait to see the next summary video. It is fun to see it all happen in 10 minutes! We built a 45 foot RV and based on that experience, we would guess the fatigue factor of this great adventure is starting to kick in. We hope not. But, if it is, please know that we are big fans of what you are doing and can't wait to see more. Best of luck to you.
@@TheDuracellProject Glad to hear you have more fun stuff just ahead. We look forward to seeing the finished work of art. Perhaps we can be part of the launch flotilla when the time comes. We rebuilt a 30 foot sailboat into an eco cruiser sans the mast and keel. It was a much simpler project than Duracell. But, we can identify a little with your process (We love upcycling stuff that is past its prime. Just like you and your team are doing)
Matt and Janneke, awesome work as always and thanks for the synopsis video! And one note...I love that Matt (and the captions) are starting to say "we" instead of "I". You two are a great team!
I know how much more work it is to video everything as your work and we all really appreciate your effort to allow us to watch you in this process I’m just trying to figure out what job you have that lets you do this because the time involved must be enormous This really is a lot of fun to watch you
702nd LIKE, 4,293rd view - cool recap. 9:00 - it was many images like this one that inspired me to compose (currently being recorded) an Irish hornpipe tune I call "Sticky Goop". I can't wait to send to you the final master recording - probably an mp3 and/or RU-vid video.
Good work you guys are great we so much enjoy watching your yacht being built .Learning something new out of each episode Thanks Kind regards Chessi and Mark Sv Connoisseur Fremantle Western Australia 🇦🇺 🙏⚓️
I watch a few channels to learn how to fiberglass and from yours I've learnt the most about vacuum bagging👍. My other favourite is On The Hulls ,he's building a cat from scratch ,he allso manufacturers surf Kayak's
This is an impressive work. It was fun to spot you two in PT at the wooden boat show last week. I didn't bother you by respect to your privacy. If you ever need composite help, I'd be happy to join a work party.
A friend of mine recently purchased a Trimaran Carbon Fiber Race Boat that's now in Honolulu Hawaii. I haven't seen pictures or details yet. Probably something that was expensive, got damaged and now is unwanted by most.
I listened to your interview on "On the Wind" yesterday and wanted to give you a shoutout on a job well done! I love how short this video was! Did you work with a naval architect to redesign the dog house and transom? How did you know what thickness of foam to use? I reinforced my keel from the bilge a few years ago and used eight 1/2 inch pieces with eight layers of fiberglass but no vacuum sealing. Never has it checked, but she definitely sailed closer to the wind with no keel wabble after I was done.
yes, we have the help of a naval architect for all the engineering projects. I'm using materials similar to how the boat was built and what was the best available to me.
Hi Matt and Janneke, I am loving your videos and look forward to new editions every week as a subscriber. I also follow other boat restoration channels and think that yours is among the best: a perfect balance of story and technology with fantastic results. A difference between your story thus far and others is an absence of ugly discoveries. As I'm sure you know, old boats often reveal nasty surprises, especially after years on the hard. Though we've seen a few dead rats, have you discovered any of the rust, structural cracks or water penetration that can be common in older production boats? Is it simply that Duracell was built to a higher standard as a race boat? If you find any, I have no doubt that Matt can handle it!! Discussing this in an episode might help some viewers relate a bit better to your amazing project, since such discoveries are so common in other boat projects. Keep up the good work!!
Hi Chris, it's a good point you make about the fact that we're not finding "ugly surprises" in Duracell. We met Rodger Martin (designer of Duracell) a few years back and he told us that mike plant built this boat extremely well. I believe the language Martin used was "like a brick shit house." Duracell was stored on the hard for 25 years, but John took care of the boat on the hard, including running a dehumidifier constantly. Before we moved Duracell, we hired a team of surveyors to come out to check the hull for delamination and moisture and they found none. Matt still decided to take a few core samples (before we moved the boat to our yard) and they came out bone dry. Duracell has good bones and we're so lucky to have this boat. It's a tried and true hull. -Janni
Quite the leap of faith you’ve taken. Is the new transom bolted and bonded to the old transom? I take it you’ll begin shifting toward building out the interior with fall/winter approaching?
A truism of our time on earth is that no one gets out alive, sad as it is to see old sailors and friends pass on, racing boats being outdated.... it seems like anything we can do to revive and restore old boats is a far cry from them being crushed and burying in the ground...
Formidable project! has the changes in ballast, hull (i'm guessing rig will change too), deck and internal layout weight distribution been recalculated by a naval engineer on how the sailboat ratios and coefficients are affected? you will for sure be sailing a very different vessel from what Duracell was, im sure you are aware of that! Congratulations again.
yes, we are keeping track of all of this stuff. duracell will more more oriented towards cruising than it was before. there are some naval architects helping me (who I have met through this channel).
Awesome work catdaddy..... I’ve been following last few months and haven’t watched every video but I’m curious, and no I’m no sailor like you but I do have a center console, however I’m curious, did you weigh everything you cut out and that which you put in ? Just interested to know how you’ll calculate for ballasts n buoyancy .... keep up the good work slick! Don’t rush it, water ain’t goin nowhere 😉
Hello Guys once again awesome vid..its cool to watch your sailboat refit..Thereis a utube channell Camara expeditions and they done the same as yous to a former whitbtread 80 you may like to watch..Thank you for the vids look forward to seeing Duracell back on the water..cheers
Amazing progress, I can only imagine all the planning and forethought that goes into every step taken on this major project. Sending positive energy from across the straight in Victoria BC.
