Sailing And Knowing Your Limits on Cat Island - Episode 29

We wrap up our time on our catamaran on Cat Island in the Bahamas sailing in the pristine bay on the west side of the island. We then press our luck with the waves and decide to turn around and sail back to where we started when things get rough.
We also spend time exploring a mangrove river and hidden blue hole, then wrap things up with a get-together onshore to sample some local food, drinks, and music at a rake and scrape.

I really like how the music is coming out, I use Epidemic Sound and it looks at the music I’ve used so far and suggests other tunes and it works well! It takes a while to find the right tune but it’s kind of fun.

So Todd. I have a few questions for you. First, when do you take the 'noobie' sticker off the Capt'ns hat? I mean, you've put a few 1,000 NM's on your vessel, you're not an old salt yet, but- I think, based on your decision to turn around and go back that you exercised good seamanship. Cats are a different breed- sometimes, you can balance the sails with reefs & 8 to 10'ers don't feel as rough. Obviously, sometimes slower is faster ( and less stressful on the boat & crew) but height, frequency & shape are the primary determinants. I think it's great that you chose to turn around, enjoy the day & get the wave action behind you! Not sure that it matters to you- but, I think you are doing extremely well under the circumstances. It's not easy and I respect the challenge you've taken on.

Thanks David! I think the sticker is peeled off, but we keep running into experiences that are new that we have to figure out. I think knowing that we don’t know everything (and preparing for the unknown) will be our best way to deal situations like this when they come up. I appreciate the confidence! We’ll keep at it, a big part of coming out here was to push ourselves and experience challenges. And boy do we get them!

There are old sailors and there are bold sailors but there are very few old and bold sailors. Getting out of your comfort zone is fine but knowing when to say when is probably going to save your boat and or you some day. Listen to your gut.

Yeah when it comes to sailing we'll err on the side of caution, there is no reason to push it if you don't have to. If we have to wait, we wait!

@@SailingSymphony if you have to push it ever, you are doing it wrong.

Another Awesome Video!! Where do you think you will sail to after the Bahamas?
@SailingSymphony
@SailingSymphony 2 года назад
Right now we are thinking we will head out into the Caribbean in November. There are two paths we could take: sail out into the Atlantic then turn right and end up in Antigua or Puerto Rico, or sail down through the Bahamas to Turks and Caicos, then Dominican Republic, then Puerto Rico. We'll see which way we go as we get closer, a lot depends on insurance and who all is interested in sailing with us. There are 3 or 4 boats interested in doing it as a group.
