In this video, Sailing Cayo Largo and the Yucatan Channel, Cuba for Cruisers, We anchor off the endless powder soft beaches of Cayo Largo, deserted from the covid-19 pandemic and go ashore to explore and pitch our sun tent. We snorkel in the reef just 100' from our boat and get chased away by huge barracuda fish. We sail around the Island of Jerventud, then west for the Yucatan Channel, and the Gulf Steam as we round the western tip if Cuba.

In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our RU-vid sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard full time. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

having run into Barracuda dozens of times, they are curious like dogs can be curious, normally ambush hunters, I think they try to gain by divers thrashing around in the water to scare something out of the rocks or get distracted. I once found myself while scuba diving between and just a few feet from a large barracuda and two large tarpon. No one made any sudden moves and each of us was eyeing the others as we slowly drifted apart. The J has an H sound in spanish, the Y sounds like J. Montreal here, good to see more Canadians out there cruising

In Spanish a J sounds Like an H jervitu would be enunciated as Heirvitu

Another great post. To me a barracuda are like a northern pike. Automatically I’m thinking that’s nothing. But Are they something to be concerned about, like a shark?

They have big sharp teeth like a shark and very little brain. They will bite anything shiny like a belt buckle, wrist watch, etc.

Mostly they are just spooky. They often follow you around slowly at a distance. Many Cubans seem to fear them. As mentioned, cuda are not very smart and will occasionally bite shiny stuff at the surface and while diving.

Great video guys and outstanding weather😎... curious to what to our daily usage on electricity a/h would be and whether you have to run the engine or will your 2 solar panels keep your batteries topped off?

We only have 2 pannels and a wind gen. We tilt the pannels toward the sun when we're on the boat so we really maximize the daylight hours. We typically reach 100% charge on the house bank on a sunny day and can run the inverter as needed

I'm a scuba diver with 500+ logged dives, mostly in tropical waters. I have always seen barracuda. They are curious but won't bother you unless you're wearing flashy jewelry or you have a dead fish (spearfishing). One time I tried to slowly swim/mingle in with a school of 50 barracudas that were schooling in a mild current above a wreck. When I got close they took off.

Hi guys, just discover your incredible helpful channel. I am in the dreaming/planning stage and I find your videos a great help. One thing I was wondering about, have you ever thought about making a video about living aboard with a dog? Or have you been done one already and I just missed it? Topics which might interest people (and me, ha ha ah) would be safety of the dog, feeding and the opposite (you now what I mean, don't you?), health travelling to other countries with your four-legged family member and so on. I would love to watch a video about this.

In cuba there is no Coka-Cola due to the embargo, hard to find limes.
