I've never heard of a sailboat with poor downwind performance. But I'm not a yacht or big sailboat guy so I'm ignorant of such vessels. Is poor downwind performance common in big boats? My goodness that Chloe sure is an incredibly beautiful boat! Just amazing how mature boating technology has become. Thank you so much for taking the time to create edit and post your videos, I know it's very time consuming so thank you again.

Yeay. Approx a Beam Reach is the fastest for us. Lots of sail exposed to the wind. Lots of physics involved when you get down to the best speed and angle of the wind.. not much is linear in this world.

Husband replaced by superior hardware - ha ha. Is there such a thing as a wife that likes sailing too much? Great episode, very informative.

Another great vid guys. Not convinced with the tack line. The way it comes up to the mast winch etc. Not sure just how much you need to vary the tension on the luff. Would have thought you would keep it fairly tight, if you need to reduce tension drop halyard a bit. I can see the point of the tack line with a long bow Sprite allowing safer attachment of the tack. 👍🏻 can't wait to see it flying.

Yes. we agree with your very points. We do know folks that have asked us about the tack line, as they do not feel safe hooking on to their bowsprit, at sea - whereas the tack line business is all done, in relative safety on deck. Also, the tack line is 2:1 so can get tighter than the halyard - but your right, the halyard can get it tight enough. I do like the ability to move the position of the halyard on the top roller though - avoids chafe. The main thing that turned out to be good about this set up is that we have a very strong new handhold for when teetering around up forward. An unforeseen advantage. But yes, your right, we're not racing buoys and don't need to adjust the tension on a cruising boat.

How is the downwind sailing now? We also thought of adding a genacker to our yacht for weak wind conditions. What conditions do you need to go downwind now (wind, sea state)?

Very enjoyable-- Puzzled why you need the complication of adjusting the tack. The tension and slack on the torsion line can be adjusted via the halyard??
@sailingchloe2330
@sailingchloe2330 4 года назад
The gennakder is a single line. the tack is doubled up. Easier to get tight. And can adjust the height above the bow.. and hence the shape of the sail We may end up dumping this for simplicity. Perhaps we're just too keen right now.....

@@sailingchloe2330 Thanks for this -- I gave up myself and decided too many lines back to the cockpit. Keep up the really enjoyable videos

Great video, I have a similar set up on my Etap 24i, which is like a miniature version of yours. I wish my sail was transparent or at least part transparent. So I can see what’s coming. Things which don’t show up on navigation systems. Lobster pots and mooring bouys e.t.c. I find that if I let the sail out I can see under it more. Your sail seemed to be cut higher already. Your tack line will certainly help too. It would be nice to have, maybe let out a few feet when on a reach? Its great allowing the sail to fly abit and create lift. It also means that your continuous furling line needs to be longer though. I was worried that you may not have much flexibility to let the tack line out before the continuous furling line becomes the load bearer? It did seem that you had some flexibility judging from the position of the jam cleat on your spray top. Hopefully enough..

For all the sealing point caulking, Sikaflex shall be replaced by Dow Corning 795 -- a much better industrial product. Imaging the skyscrapers in Dubai -- huge range of temperature span, UV, wet-dry, wind, sand, salt .... look it up. It seals aluminum, plastic, and glass.... Sikaflex is so inferior. How many time Sikaflex fails me on my Lexan-Aluminum hatch seal. Leak, leak, leak. F*
