It was a great event in Barcelona, The organization and the youth and women's sailing was magic. There is no way ETNZ could or should bring it back to NZ. We don't have the money or the resources to do it justice. I'm all for it being done right and we can't match overseas money or event. I loved watching it on TV. Grow the event Grant!!

I see comments saying its a rich mans sports it is and so is horse racing, motor racing at an international level how much money is expended with the All Blacks. Lets give the people behind Team NZ the crew and many others who enjoy this sport, lets not forget that we have some brilliant boat designers and of course the crews of that boat.

I would bet that everyone in TNZ would LOVE to defend the cup in NZ again. The problem is they don't have the kind of money to develop facilities and pay for everything themselves -- they're struggling to get money just to build a competitive boat and hire sailors. The event itself needs to be paid for by someone else. If Auckland city doesn't want to do that then that's hardly the fault of TNZ. Barcelona also won't want to do it again -- they've already got their massive waterfront redevelopment done, and that's what they've got out of it. I think the best option for next time would be Portsmouth. INEOS could find the money for it -- for sure they would have if they'd won this time. Maybe it's not appropriate to give one of the challengers home-team advantage. We all know Saudi and Emirates would love to put in that money. And why not, as long as the location doesn't compromise the racing? Bermuda was one of the best events ever.

Now it's time for those directly involved and competitors to set a venue and timetable which is more suitable for competitors and public so that there is maximum benefit for this exhilarating sporting event. Brian it's great that in this current world we live in we are able to express our different views on this sport we love. I happen to follow the view of the late Uffa Fox who expressed the view that weight was only useful on a steamroller. Of course the J class have their historic role. But I applaud the dedication of the vast teams, not forgetting the dedicated support of their families. As for me I will let those who have most skin in the game to make the decisions. The Americas Cup is bigger than NZ's partisan sporting inclination. To grow the event, and surely that is the responsibility, duty even, of both the defenders and the challengers then it really needs to be held in Europe...at least in that time-zone. NZ does just not have the resources to splash around on this event and do it justice......no matter how much I would like it to 'come home'. The reality is that the Americas Cup is a Global event, and it should be, and thus it has no 'home' per se. As much as Kiwis felt that ETNZ abandoned NZ, I think they (and the bloody poms!) deserve a round of applause for the event in Barcelona, youth and women's events is definitely 'growing' the cup.

The timezone didnt help Kiwi engagement at all, having it start after 1am (midnight for most of the LV regatta) IF there was enough wind. That said, the boats themselves are magic but there were few instances during the regatta where that was really illustrated so the coverage itself could (and will) improve with less silhouette shots of dripping sweaty cyclors during the middle of the other teams tack or gybe.. 40-50 knots (almost 100kph) of boat speed in 8-20 knots of wind, the boat technology is amazing so if you havent seen the races its definitely worth checking as they're all on YT and guessing the highlights has less cyclors and more of the close action.

Kiwi living in Mozambique and managed to watch it all. It was all free live on RU-vid, or each race was available for subsequent viewing if you missed it live. Tidy well presented 30 minute races. Peter Lester and team providing commentary etc. I guess people didn't know it was available, or just weren't interested. I think NZ for now can't host and defend successfully, due to the economy post pandemic and the government of kindness. I've seen figures that they need about $200 million to host and defend. The hosting rights as paid by Barcelona are worth more than the various sponsorships. Dealing with NZ Govt/ Auckland City will be met with provarication and only pay in drips and drabs and count services as part of the support package. Dalton wants to win and needs cash. He won't mess around with NZ politics or some romantic notion. He'll take top dollar and look to put the best team on the water again in a couple of years time. Good on him, if that's what he has to do, to continue to build on NZs legacy in the event. Given the cost of the event nowadays, I fear that once we loose, we will never be able to compete effectively again.
@PamelaAttwood
@PamelaAttwood 7 часов назад
The economy is not in a good place and Auckland has infrastructure issues. Putting a tender in to hold the America's Cup here would not be good timing. The Team is now a professional entity and makes financial decisions accordingly. It is the Formula 1 of yachting. The costs now for the Volvo (Former Whitbread) Around the World Race is huge and makes a barrier to getting a NZ entry to the start line. It is no longer the adventure race it was. Would love to see both Races back but timing is everything.

Always too much a of a built-in advantage to the defender. Only exceptions are where there is a major breakthrough (winged keel, Big Boat....etc) which changes the game and gives (potential) advantage to challenger{s). However with rules which now specify so much commonality, these opportunities will be even fewer and farther between than before.

The boat left the harbour 15 years ago. 😂. There wasn’t even a NZ flag on the boat. The board of ETNZ have done very nicely out of this. And will explore way to continue to do so. There are 9999 sailing competitions with one-design boats. The whole point of the Americas Cup is that is is the ONE event that is as much or more about what designers and engineers can do within a set of rules ("formula") as it is about the sailors. Like Formula 1 in car racing, the ideal is to make a boat/car that would win no matter which of the top tier people you put in it. Why do you want there to be ZERO such events?

I genuinely believe people are not as interested because it's just not the same on foils. We've all seen the whizzing on foils now for years. Okay cool but the novelty is over. There is the speed annnnnd that's about it. There isn't a team of men man-handling huge spinnakers off the deck as waves crash over. There isn't huge personalities with wrap around sunnies and zinc lip balm screaming at umpires holding up protest flags. Not all the old races were a spectacle but watch a good old one here on youtube and you are drawn in straight away to the human drama. There is no human drama with the current boat. Just a bunch of dudes cycling? WTF? To watch, quite frankly, is boring. Once you see one boat is faster it's a punishing watch. Yes there was some closer racing this year but it still sucks. We won because we picked better wind shifts with our heads tucked down wearing lycra.
@TheLeg_11
@TheLeg_11 6 часов назад
"We won because we picked better wind shifts". So you're saying we won because of our sailing skill, knowledge and acumen? You start by saying its about speed but then say we won by picking shifts, which is literally a main skill of traditional sailing. Isn't that exactly what you're asking for when you yearn for the older boats? And whats the problem with cycling? It's either a bunch of guys grinding with their arms or grinding with their legs, its still limbs going around in circles, legs are just obviously more powerful and more efficient. Also look at every single americas cup since 1983, one boat is always much faster. We haven't had a close Americas Cup in 40 years. Very often it was a clean sweep or close to it. We've won 5-0 lost 5-0, 7-2 here, on paper 2013 looked close at 9-8 but really it was effectively 8-0 to start and then 9-0 to finish. Wasn't close at all. One boat being faster than another is the norm in the America's cup, not an exception. Thats like complaining Usain Bolt is boring because he was faster than everyone else.
@yup3398
@yup3398 6 часов назад
@@TheLeg_11 Yes some foiling boats are just faster - which causes a boring drag race. I didn't say ALL hence my special mention of closer racing this year (in the final). Yes we won due to acumen but it does not translate to the viewer. There is no tactician hanging off the side of the vessel screaming out that he has found good pressure. Just calm radio instructions to turn. Boring. The cycling sucks. It is ridiculous. Men tucked away in lycra wearing ski goggles? Dumb. Men grinding on the deck is visceral. You can hear them screaming at each other for more power. You can see their faces in agony. With the current racing you get a camera at their toes looking up at them while they drip sweat over it in their lycra. It royally sucks. Please read my comment again "Not all the old races were a spectacle". Yes the finals were often dictated by a faster vessel and subsequently a bore but I can show you plenty of close build up races where that is not the case. The modern race is a bore. There is more action in thirty seconds of old racing where a chase yacht rolls over the top of the leader downwind then in any foil race. It is like you are watching the management of yacht racing versus witnessing sailors slog it out on deck. God even the start is a bore. They just hoon around and in general keep their distance from one another. Look I get it. This is what the sponsors think the people want. But don't take my word for it. Look at the crashing lack of interest in the modern race as each cup passes. The organisers will say otherwise but there were bugger all vessels out watching and a real lack of interest back home. And over at the venue just some enthusiasts and family watching from shore.

Let the cup go. Just don't put 'Team New Zealand' in the name. There's been too many betrayals.

Lester was working hard there - to not say the quiet part out loud. There isn't enough money available in NZ to make it viable for ETNZ to run the cup here. "Won't set the team up to fail".... just say it like it is Lester - without enough money we can't win, and that money is going to have to come from foreign sponsors, and they will want the event sailed in their home waters. So NO. The cup isn't coming back home. And frankly - the mystique in NZ has faded too. More and more Kiwi's simply don't care enough anymore. Sean is right - "our" generation have lost the love.

@@Peter_Pepper_Love Cool. You go out there and raise 100 million for them then - and don't use any taxpayers money either. Seeing as how you are - all about it...
