How entitled is Golris to think she can have her conviction quashed because she will have trouble getting a job in law. My understanding is to be admitted to the bar you need to be of good character.
This woman is someone with a blatant disregard and disrespect of our laws and she has no place working in our legal system - she should never be allowed to return to the bar. This self entitled woman should have been deported she has thumbed her nose at New Zealanders an she has cost the country plenty with the wage she collected while working as a MP plus the cost of 2 trials. She has proven herself unworthy and devious and few people would want to employ her. I do not believe her claim that she suffered some sort of mental breakdown... she insults genuine mental health sufferers when she uses this as an excuse. She is nothing but a petty criminal. She was a supporter of Hamas terrorists and demonstrated in support of them.. I suggest she relocate to Palestine ... but not before she makes retribution and repays all the money the NZ taxpayer invested in her. The sooner she is deported the better.
The reasons why she has not been charged are a bit comic but should be stated nevertheless. It is also connected to the reason that the Greens do not have a co leader at the moment.
When her stealing from three shops was announced, the value of the goods exceeded a $10,000.00 threshold. But obviously, through wheeling and dealing with court prosecutors, this amount was conveniently dropped so that the severity of her charges was reduced. What a scam, just like Golriz herself.
There are lots of families on low incomes really struggling to get by given the rising cost of living. Most of them struggle through trying to make ends meet. A small minority of them might shoplift for essentials - and in some circumstances they may be deserving of sympathy from the judicial system if it is for small items like food. Golriz in no way is in this catagory. She was in a $200,000 salary job and shoplifting luxury clothing worth thousands of dollars. She was also an MP and a lawyer who well knew exactly what she was doing and exactly what was wrong with it
Yep.. you do the crime you do the time.. no one is above the law.. good job. Golriz Ghahraman should be in jail as people who are held in the public eye should pay ten fold.
She, of all people, has no right to be excused or her conviction not recorded simply because of who she is. She knew full well what she was doing and would still be a thief to this day if she had not been caught! As a supposed refugee fleeing from Iran, a lawyer, and a sitting MP, she of all people should be expected to respect the country and society that has given her more opportunities than most, despite her membership in the Green Party. Possibly NZ has been duped into accepting people like her and offered too much. Her true character has finally been exposed as a deceitful, entitled, thieving grafter who has naturally gravitated toward The Green Party and the people she feels she can easily manipulate. There is one thing that is certain, back in Iran, if she was caught stealing there is no way she would be treated so lightly, and she certainly wouldn't scoff at her sentence and play the victim, or ever steal again.

I always felt she should have been deported... now she should be made to pay retribution to the NZ taxpayer who has invested so much in her, the cost of her education, the very large salary she was paid as an MP, the cost of 2 legal trials. All this should amass to around 3/4 a million dollars plus ... all paid out of the taxes of hard working kiwis.

True. Fifty percent of them that end up in Court are proved to be on the wrong side of the law. All 100% have their hands/snouts very deep in your pockets.
Just before last year's election I met a woman who was trying to get me to vote greens for environmental reasons As she was hounding me she saw an old friend and started chatting Listening in on the conversation I gathered this woman had traveled overseas often through out the years So for thirty years or more she's poured thousands of tones of carbon into the atmosphere flying everywhere and holidaying everywhere Now these people are closer to God they think their " get out of jail free card with God " is to vote greens That's ( I believe) how most green voters are ( just my opinion)
True, every body is entitled to a chance. Yes you should have been removed from the bench if you let crims, at your discretion, be let off, many times. Embarrassment 🐍⚖️☝️🔥
What are the equivalent legal precedents? Only comparing what punishments others got for the same type of crime would inform us of how balanced our justice system is.
She is trying to turn the morality of the conviction around. She can play the victim all she wants but it’s clear she is not one and she needs to grow up accept her guilt and punishment and at least that would show some semblance of a spine you can respect.
Defence lawyer Maria Dyhrberg says that having a conviction is a bar to an individual gaining an aprenticeship. This is definitely not true. There have been many individuals who have had convictions and then gone onto completed apprenticeships.
Who cares if she can't get a job in law ? I don't think anyone with half a mind would want her as their lawyer anyway. Why can't she just apply for a job at Pak n Save, or Countdown ? Mind you, she wouldn't be very good at that - she wouldn't be able to cope with customers complaining about faulty products, service etc. She is a delicate flower.

There are previous incidents of alleged criminal behaviour by people in the public view who are given a light sentence because of their high status. Giving rise to the crudely put truth that life is like a shit sandwich: the more bread you've got the less shit you eat.

Her mental health seemed fine when she was downing the alcohol with a group of friends at a ponsonby bar that I was at recently -she was very happy and jovial
I have looked at many of the comments and almost all show no sympathy for Golriz Ghahrahman. I wonder whether she deserves the vitriol in some of the comments. I tend to suspect she was motivated by some kind of mental disorder, brought about by the pressures she was under as a senior Green MP (hated by many) and, earlier as a young refugee from an intolerant country, Iran. All those pressures may well have led to her shoplifting offences for which she has been convicted. She will have to live with the the stigma of her convictions for the rest of her life. I am not a Christian nor a greenie nor a leftie, but I hope I hope our community can find a place to fogive her and allow her to exercise and develop the talents she has.
