In this episode I help a friend sail a brand new catamaran from the Bahamas to the Annapolis boat show.

I am a monohull sailer with a small heavy cape dory 28 so keep this in mind, but here are my thoughts: We weren't able to truly sail her because of some damage in the rigging so I can't comment on the sailing ability, but compared to the designs of some other catamarans it seemed like it would perform under sail better. I.e. lower cockpit, lower profile over all, higher bridge deck etc. All of the lines are lead to the cockpit in an efficient way and the running rigging was well thought out. We were in some less than nice weather often 25kts sometimes touching 30 with pretty steep chop and the boat powered through it quite well. I was amazed with how it handled the seas, but remember my main comparison is a 28ft mono hull. When the bow would drop off a wave the whole boat would shimmy but I think that is something felt on all catamarans. one thing that was alarming and I never did figure out why it happened, was a vibration in the aluminum pole that connects the rudders together. for several hours it would wiggle and wobble quite violently. it only happened one day however and in normal weather. I chock it up to unique circumstances. The construction of boat was of a good quality and we never heard any creaks or groans and we pushed the boat quite hard. much harder than most cruising couples would. The visibility of the boat from the main cabin is amazing and the cockpit is accessed from the middle of the boat so you never have to go on deck making it quite safe. Eloi, the skipper of this trip said it was one of the best catamarans he had sailed on and he has been a charter captain for a while so he has sailed a lot of different boats. In my opinion for a production catamaran it is one of the better ones. I am sure it will not compare to a performance cat or anything like that but, we aren't here to compare apples and oranges. Thanks for your comment and if you need any more information we can figure out a better way to communicate. Cheers! Damond
