Hello and Welcome Aboard SV Blue Moon,
If you enjoyed this video and want to support us directly, you can receive access to our episodes Ad-Free, our chat community and much more at / bluemoonlife These videos are made possible by the generosity of viewers like you and we want to thank you so much for being here!
This video chronicles a 6 day trip from Pender Island to Downtown Victoria Harbour. Along the way we stopped at some of the other gulf islands and had to repair a leaky coolant hose, which caused our engine to overheat. We hope you enjoy the footage from our trip.
About the boat:
SV Blue Moon is a 1978 Catalina 30. The boat was acquired in the spring of this year (2020) and many hours of labour were given to get her live-aboard ready! Her engine is a Universal M25 Diesel.
About us:
We are currently (Fall, 2020) living aboard Blue Moon in beautiful Victoria, BC. We are grateful to be able to live, work and study from the boat. This is our first time living aboard and are loving it so far. The "boat life" has some unique challenges, but we are slowly learning how to optimize our use and enjoyment of the small space.
Thank you very much for watching and please feel free to engage with us in the comments,
J+G

I'm a born and bred Victoria 'girl' and spent my whole life on boats on the water. I've explored every inch of both the land and sea around your locations. I love watching you do the same😊. Isn't it 'fun' how boats turn you into mechanics (and every other type of repair professional? Lol). Thank you for sharing your experiences, and prompting my long forgotten memories 💖❤️ (Baines Channel is infamous for that current!).

Regarding the hose issue: for future reference, if you aren't sure if the fitting will fit the hose, then take the hose off the engine where it connects, and see if it fits there. If so, THEN cut the hose where the hole is, and reverse the ends to connect the other side of the fitting to the other piece of the hose... No need to tape it up in and worry about the pressure failing the tape job first... :)

Just "chanced" upon your videos, like watching . I had to tape up a coolant hose once, I used electrical tape and hockey tape. First a layer of electrical tape, then hockey tape, used several layers like this and it got me in to get a proper hose. You can also keep the "Radiator Cap" Loose on your expansion tank, so as to have no pressure in the system. But only if the temp. is not too high in the coolant. Thanks Michael

I have had better luck getting hoses onto fittings when I heat up a ceramic mug of water to boiling and soak the hose in it to the length that you want to go over the barbs. The inside diameter of the hose will expand a little when you compress the length of the hose. Hope your repair holds. Thanks for sharing.

I was looking for reviews on insulating my boat and stumbled over your channel. You are very refreshing. Years ago I did charters out of Vancouver an always end up in Montegue. As we went below the power line I would ask my passengers to make sure we had at least 10-20 foot clearance as the power could dump to the mast. Me guest would always be nervous and as that maybe I should stop. The top of mast was about 70 feet, and we would look pretty close. I think the power line is about 120 feet. Keep up the good work and maybe I will se you this summer. I am out of Ladysmith.

Enjoyed your video very much. Damm , it’s scary when the engine breaks down. However, you were able to make a temporary repair to continue on your journey. Sure nice you both enjoy the water. I’m a power boater. I cruise in a 28’ Bayliner 2858 in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s not an expensive boat but gets me out on the water. The Bay Area is known for its sailing. In fact, sailboats out number power boats 2 to 1. My wife loves the enclosed cabin, great sit-tee, and dual helms. The flybridge gives me excellent visibility to avoid that submerged log and occasionally whales looking for food.

Hi guys. I just came across your channel and I think you have some good potential in production of your videos. I'm sure it's a big learning curve to produce a good quality show. I have found that when I watch RU-vid videos I like to be informed as I watch. If you don't mind some helpful advice I think you might for instance tell us about your geographical location by way of a graphic from a chart or Navionics or even google earth or even the history around you like maybe the Empress hotel and Parliament buildings. I think for your first boat you picked a great sailboat to live on. The Catalina 30' may be a little fat but it makes up for that with the comfort inside. Keep up with the productions ok. I'll pass your channel on as best I can. My wife, son and I sail our Sceptre 36' out of Campbell River and I have lived on the West coast all my life so I appreciate a home grown RU-vid channel. Take care and I will be watching for sure. Trevor from Campbell River BC ps are you on Messanger?

Nice trip, nice video and good fix on the coolant line. One seemingly small thing but not trivial: it's Montague Harbour, not Montague Bay. You'd think who cares, but the BC Coast has lots of places with similar names that are nowhere near each other, for example, Bedwell Bay and Bedwell Harbour, Pender Island and Pender Harbour, etc.

Hi Mark, thanks for the comment! Gillian has been sailing for the past decade or so....I myself had never stepped foot on a keel boat before last summer. Needless to say, we are learning!! :D Thanks for the comment.

I sailed dinghies in the summers growing up (Gillian), and Jonas has only been out a couple of times! Thank you for your question, we are hoping to do a Q&A at some point to go into detail about our sailing experience :)

Going back to vid where you insulated and used some pink foam. DO NOT DO THIS, because this foam off-gases. It causes itchy eyes and runny nose in some ppl if no barrier is used. Adding assorted manufactured materials can have accumulating negative effects on health, but so can mold. Please, for your sakes, find another way to keep warm. It's not worth your health.

Kinda boring! Just living aboard and no sailing? Live aboard’s never go sailing!
