If I were a super-villain I would hollow out the inside of it and make it the headquarters for my super-secret evil empire. or something like that. maybe. Then I breed really creepy giant insects to infest the world--oh, never mind, they've already done that.
Apart from the simple and obvious FACT that if they are extinct then simply by definition they AREN'T there. At least not more than some possible bones. It's as safe as anywhere else to go.
