Sailing the Coast of Death on the North Atlantic coast of Spain is notorious amongst sailors and when there we encounter some wild weather including a wave over the bow and a mini tornado whilst at anchor in force 9 winds, huge seas and fog all whilst nervously keeping an eye out for Orcas.
Join us for both the wild winds and then the flat calm as we explore north west Spain and the stunning Spanish Ria's starting in Camarinas where have a beautiful flat night at anchor.
We fly our spinnaker and see Risso’s Dolphins as we make our way to Ria de Arousa.

Very nice film that reflects the dilemmas and 'ups and downs' of real cruising that are instantly recognisable by us ordinary sailors. The decision you faced about shifting anchorage and your discussion about it was an excellent example and a valuable lesson to budding cruisers; that sort of thing makes you stand out. We certainly sympathised about the wind. We re-cut our asymmetric to fit on a top-down furler to make it less of a hassle but I'm not convinced it was worth it; the missus always groans whenever I suggest rigging it and we smiled in sympathy when you mentioned how little you've used that sail. Your comment about 'not knowing what town you were visiting' was an absolute howler - a great dit and we look forward to many more.

Thank you Iain. Really appreciate the feedback 😊😊 We’ve both said we’ll try not to be so lazy about the asymmetric in the coming season as it is a useful sail but I guess time will tell! We still need to rig a proper bowsprit for it really as we currently rig the tack line on the anchor roll bar. The anchor is held down by a substantial locking pin so can take the load but a proper bowsprit will be a lot better….it’s on the list! Cheers ⛵️

Coast hopping to Gib daylight only to try to avoid Orca’s then pretty much straight across the med to Montenegro to recharge our schengen clock so that we can go into Greece in June…That’s the plan but time will tell I guess! Watch this space 😬😂😂⛵️😎

Great episode. Trying to follow on charts as you go, but can often not find the places...so many Rio de something or other! Can you always put up the place names ( as you did with Rio de Arousa?) as text or better still an annotated map. Ta. Good sailing.

Hi there, thank you for following along. 😊 I will certainly try to perhaps put the name of the place when it first appears. I do have some animated maps in the video but appreciate they don’t have many place names on them. Will definitely try to include the full place name as we arrive at each place in future. Thanks for your comment and support 😊⛵️⛵️

Enjoyed that, thanks. What size of anchor and how much chain out to hold in 47 knots please? Not sure we’d have slept 😊
@FollowIntrepidBear
@FollowIntrepidBear 2 года назад
Hi Richard, when we bought Intrepid Bear she had a 20kg Bruce anchor on 8mm chain. We upgraded that to a 30kg Mantus anchor on 10mm chain. In Cedeira the depth was only around 4 metres so on the normal 4 x scope we’d have had around 16m of chain out but in those conditions and with no limit on swinging room I can’t recall the exact length we had out but I suspect around 50m. The length of chain dampens any snatching. We’re not sponsored by Mantus but we are super impressed with the holding power. It hasn’t dragged once yet and if it goes into sand or firm mud you know you’re very secure. As for sleeping we do have an anchor alarm on a phone but neither of us slept very well. On reflection we should have stood anchor watches because at least we’d get 4 hours each of decent sleep rather than a whole night with not much sleep. Will definitely go onto watches in those conditions in future. 😊⛵️

One thing we’ve discovered is that we can’t see everything and will miss some awesome places. No idea when or if we’ll be back that way but you never know! 😊 Xx
