Sailing SV Delos intense weather no doubt my grand illusion of crossing oceans has been dashed there's no way I could do it. Watching you guys get pounded pushed shoved and bombarded with those sounds that are around you would drive me crazy. I just came back from a three day trip to Ensenada Mexico we left last Friday in a storm surge with 50 to 60 mile an hour winds. No Bueno
I'd call it a heavy 9 and saw some sea condition near a 10. Was in an Atlantic force 12 hurricane on an LST in the service many moons ago, a simple NC to PR passage turned into a real rodeo and a two week brutal event
OMG! I FEAR the Southern Ocean & the Roaring 40's just because of videos like this. But, I only get gut scared when a boat starts looking like a cork in the sea. The Super Maramu 2000 never looked out of control- always tracking, even when being hit with a large rogue from the side? What a friggin' boat! Best. Investment. Ever.
I watch this over and over thx. I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and I am going to sea I hope, once more while I still can. It's not bad cancer? But it's cancer. I love your channel, thank you.
WOW epic big water montage. That folks is LEGIT blue water sailing. AH the old Delos days. Your lives have changed, and you know that. Remember this sail, remember this 10 year adventure. The rest of your lives are not gonna compare to this. Never forget it. Your friends, always... #SVfortysix
The other night I was driving to class and Ramukanji blasts out of my car speakers. Pavlovian grin ensues and I know I can make it through another day. You guys are amazing and I'm grateful you continue to share with us! I even know most of the words now.
Wow im a very active scuba diver since 1991 in California. I’ve been to every Channel Islands, been on many dive boats. I have never been sailing. You people live an extreme life style. I have the most respect for all of you. Great job showing us the world.
Rewatching some of the great SV Delos videos. Thanks to everyone that made these videos possible. Best to Karrin, Brian and the Nugget as they sail into the next chapter. Have fun and stay safe. J&J
Jan 1/23 - back for another view of one of the most epic, adrenalin pumping, high wind, high wave sailing videos EVER! Happy New Year 2023 Delos Crew. Can''t wait for your new adventures! Thanks for 13 years of amazing footage and counting. Love you guys!!
By far the best footage anyone has ever made of sailing in BIG SEAS . You've captured the, size ,speed and the nature of the beast. Show us just how tiny you are in this keg of kick ass. At times, dragging the keel sideways through the waves while moving 20 knots forward . This is a video that I will watch over and over . Breath taking and stunning at the same time 👍🏻👍🏻
This was a remarkable edit! The choice of music and the selected film footage seamlessly and perfectly melded. The video quality is mind blowing on my 4K HDR TV. Very well done! Better editing than a lot of mainstream television. All your episodes are awesome this one stands out....For me any way.........Keep up your great work and don't change a thing you are on the right track for sure.
Looks like 7/8 based on the vid. Plenty enough to break in the polliwogs. I have enjoyed your posts for years. Thank you all for documenting your travels. Fair winds and following seas
This video brings back memories of when I was in Hurricane Guilda, years ago. We sailed from Sandy Hook, NJ to Cape Hattaras in 36 hours, surfing down 30 footers in 70+kt winds before our rudder broke in the 29ft Piver Tri-maran. Thank you for reminding me to never do that again! I will now live thru your videos instead of ever going to sea again... Mitch - Annapolis, MD
Great, great video. Intense, it was. I felt it. Very happy that you all survived the trip. About the autopilot repair, the guy who services our car just replaces everything in sight when something goes wrong or it's getting a bit old. It costs abit more for parts and a little less for his time but then we benefit from the new system. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am learning so much about living aboard.
Damn, you guys have gotten so salty! Been following you since the first passage across the Pacific from Galapagos, and you were an IT guy with a boat, a girl and your little brother. Now you guys are taking on the South Indian Ocean and laughing and having fun in it! Good on ya, mates!
WOW THAT'S some serious sailing. Maybe getting seasick just watching. Guess it's time to do a major overhaul!? Thanks for having me along with your adventure.
Stryke vegabond is more of a daycare nowadays. Kinda annoying for some, but I guy future parents that sail would enjoy knowing what it's all about having a child on a boat. Personally I don't think it's fair to make a kid hang out with his/her parents only, socializing in school is important I think. That being said, I'm not gonna say I couldn't raise a good kid with my partner cause we would make a super cool kid. It's just seems unfair to it because it can't decide what it wants yet. Kinda like big dogs on a little boat. Sure they love you more than anything , but my dogs have more fun, hands down, three dogs makes a solid pack and being able to run and play in the bush, hunt squirrels and chipmunks all day while I work, it's the greatest life a dog could ask for. Free roam all the time, no collars, no leash , ever. Jeez you know I just thought, maybe sailing wherever you want, only the winds directing you is the ultimate freedom. Fuck man I need some sleep.
WOW!!..Incredible seas...Thank you Delos crew for giving us the ultimate experience of sailing in the Indian Ocean..Brian, Brady you boys are mad dog crazy for the sacrifices you do to get the best shots possible...I can't express enough how I look forward to seeing the adventures of Delos every Friday on my RU-vid screen...You make this old land lover smile with every video you produce... #LiveToSail #SailToLive #EnjoyTheRide
Man, mad respect to you all! That's some really balls deep sailing... Everyone aboard earned their stripes on that passage. I will say that I always find it a little bit less scary at night in similar conditions compared to daytime, when you actually have a visual of the beasts around you. Once again thank you for showing the realities of long passage making, good, bad, and butt clenching!!!!! Cheers.
I think this is the first time the video has been able to capture the magnitude of the waves. Quite a sight to see and I can only imagine how it would have been to experience first person. Thanks for taking us along for the ride ☺️
Great video at 8:20 and 10:35. It gives you the feel of being there and not watching from the couch. It also makes you happy your on the couch, at home, on dry land.
Your storm experience takes me back to a 36 hour storm we endured aboard our 40 foot Manta Catamaran while crossing the Gulf of Mexico a few years back. We had sustained 50 Kts and gusts over 65 Kts for 26 hours of the storm. I never felt afraid, but there were several times when I just wanted to crawl into a hole and cry! I remember being so excited when the winds finally moderated in to the high 20's. This episode took me back there - almost like a Vietnam Vet reliving a firestorm... I THINK that's a compliment? Oh hell, it's definitely a compliment. Nice Job!
These are the episodes I miss. I understand though with a bambino/a on the way, things need to be mellow. It's great the way you take rookies out and teach them the craft. Fair winds to you guys 👍⛵
8:10-10:30 the choice of music with video editing absolutely amazing and genius! Suggestion for you and fellow sailors; For the subwoofer and such items I suggest investing in 3M™ Dual Lock™" reclosable fastener" tape. Its self adhesive industrial grade Velcro that instead of hooking into the opposite fabric as traditional Velcro does it has mushroom shape steps that lock into place and up to 5 times stronger than the best Velcro. It's used on such applications on planes, the space shuttle, rockets, tanks, battleships, and industrial equipment on items and panels that can't use fasteners or be permanently affixed. Seen it used in sports as well in football helmets and prosthetics. I learned about it in the medical field on specialty beds we used to invert, suspend, or rotate patients. The adhesive doesn't destroy the surface it's used on either. Safe solvents like your waste alcohol from your still will cut its residue. Just my 2cents worth that can hopefully help someone out that doesn't want to fasten screws, brackets, or strapping to their boats finish work.
This is one hell of a boat, and an amazingly cohesive crew. To go the Roaring 40's in a little dinghy like that, and with such unfailing good cheer, exhibits the real spirit of the great Age of Sail. These young salts can belly up to any bar in the world.
I really enjoy how positive and caring you guys are. "you're sailing on the ocean in 40 knots, it's not a trivial thing" real men encourage instead of make fun. love the vibe.
Used to spend a third of the year on our yacht in the Adriatic sea for more than 15 years, rode some heavy weather / cyclones too, but to imagine that far from humans and land in the ocean is something completely different! You guys give me a serious heartache as I haven't been on the sea for the last 15 years, watching your vids I miss it more than ever! You are soo positive and laid back - thank you and keep it up!
Yes, that footage was off the hook! Few mariners seem to be able to capture the essence of heavy weather - they have obviously figured it out. I found myself leaning against the swell, it was that immersive!
the leadership is exceptional, it's evident in the moral of the crew and the depth of authenticity, hulmor and courage. Congatuatilons or something like that.
One of your most fascinating legs. Educational for those of us looking forward to do the same one day. Good job on showing problem solving. An important part of serious sailing
grant richardson would totally agree. Funny I heard the notification at 2:30 in the morning and had to get up to watch. Loved this one had to watch again.
I agreee, I've been commenting that this should be picked up by a network....no involvement...just licensing....but this YT channel definitely is network quality and has large appeal. That said the network involvement could be a source for a large more filtered pool of "crew" to choose from....imo the crew and relationship dynamics are very important...previous crew highlighted this. Concept of Core crew and rotating out crew is cool...but quality of rotating crew needs to be high....not sure if sailing skill or "production" skills are more important. lol
I know these are probably a couple months behind but holy shit. The new guys and gal have balls of steel, I don't think you guys were ever in seas that big with last crew except maybe on last run across Indian Ocean. I can't believe none of them is screaming to get the hell off the boat. If I'm ever well off enough and decide to get SV I have a whole new respect for your Amel.
I've watched you from the beginning and you are my favorite show. Can't even imagine how this experience must have felt. To be sooo far from civilization or any chance of safety. Amazing
Anyone who boats and tries to catch waves on a camera will tell you the waves are always larger than they appear on film. This capture was amazing. Perspective, editing, timing… well done.
Guys you have had the experience of a lifetime. We made the crossing in March 2010 but did not have the luxury of self stealing and took 40 days. BIG BIG seas as you are aware but the most exhilarating experience of my life. Good on you for having the sand to do a passage like that.
That appeared to be a solid 8! This episode though was a 10 all the way. These Indian Ocean videos (both on the way to Africa and since leaving) have captured intense blue water sailing better than anything else I've ever seen. The footage in this episode in particular was just spectacular. You guys do this so much better than any other sailing channel and as others have mentioned the production lately is off the charts.
There is another sailing YT channel I like but they hide out behind islands when they see a storm coming. You guys are living and working through the hard core shit like the legendary seamen we read about. You guys rock.
Hi Guys , I know life is far from this point , but I just wanted to say this episode was a great lesson in Salty Sailor School . The communication between Both Brothers has a wisdom and trust many never get to experience. Peace to you all .
If this was network TV, Delos would be raking in millions in syndication. Great episode. Looks like it might have been the most challenging sailing to date. Way to go!
I can't imagine !! I grew up sailing a 25' on a river system that might have seen 3' swells! Love the show. Keep up the amazing job. Waiting for my Tshirt.
Have watched this again and again. I think it has got to be the best video out there. Having sailed destroyers in the Pacific and especially through a typhoon, I can feel what you were going through. Well done by all the crew. Nobody panicked, just got the job done . I very impressed.
Force 8 - 9 Don't end up being a reality show guys sailing downwind all the time in a cat (Floating RV) with shopping trips and pizza vids - This is the only true gutsy sailing channel - Need to boost the subscriber count somehow you deserve it.
Know this is an old one, but I had to comment; this is some of the most nautical sailing I've ever seen on a sailing video! I've never seen anyone capture how high the seas can get and depths of the trough as you have in this video. Great depiction of what pitch and role really means in high seas! Hopefully your having fair winds and following seas where you are today!
Also on an Amel, same build as SV Delos, it is uncanny the similar events. We ducked under Madagascar a few degrees north of your route, Reunion>Cape Town. Similar heavy weather. Found myself in 45knot winds, swell crashing on deck, pelting rain, dealing with line stowage breaking loose about the mast. (lost a 15kg solar panel to a wave hit even) Sitting there hugging the mast with my legs like a rodeo cowboy, totally drenched, kinda had a zen moment as a sailor. Serious reminiscing watching the vid guys! Cameras never do the swell justice - I know how big those waves are ;) We renamed the cockpit "The Pool deck". Look forward to your observations on Reunion. Wonder if your guys will/have hit up Rodrigues?
Now that was some gnarly conditions that appeared to put both Delos and the new crew to a pretty good test!! Loving your vids and the great editing job.
Absolutely epic video! The slow motion shots of sailing these waters are beautiful and almost calming, but when it switches to actual speed, it really shows the relentless boat motion and thrashing speed, its like a roller coaster that just keeps going!
Brian, Karin, Brady, and Delos crew, I just have to say , I've watched all your videos probably 2 some 3 times, and just have to say this is by far the best video yet! Wow, that was Badass f-ing cool !!! with Rothschild's music and the huge waves, You guys have a great weekend. Lance
Luck favors the brave. Young beautiful brave people. Give me a fine ship and a star to steer her by. Well done. Some people live on the edge, some in the middle, some in a comfort zone, and some don't live at all. You have all lived well. Go kindly.
You guys are soo down to earth and not corporate at all. Great to see real people that have to deal with real problems using what they have. Very mcGyverish lol Subed and liked. Thanks for the great video. Stay safe and enjoy the earth
Liked and commented Delos. AAAAhhhh yes, living vicariously some great adventures through your videos ,,,pretending I am there with ya!!!!!!! Thank-you Thank-you for makin' 'these videos for us, Delos...happy and safe adventures, long may you run
Wow! That wave action was really cool. There's water everywhere! Hang on. The "like driving a car, blindfolded..."is perfect and humourous, and then....puph. 🤣 That wind in the background is a steady moan. Too cool again! You're in a marathon, for sure. You guys were so happy to hit land after that epic sail. Sail on.
I love the videos of you guys actually sailing, especially the bad weather ones. Brian and Brady are both excellent sailors and I learn something every time. Thanks Delos crew!!!!
That's some intense badass sailing. Feeling a little guilty for calling myself a sailor for riding those sea states on an Aircraft carrier...USS Enterprise.
I hear the word "jussus" and see Savannas in the hold and I just know it's gonna be lekker! Took a 39ft Roberts from CT to Albany Aus, 35 days at sea, 2 massive storms, a seized engine and a concussed skipper later. Consider yourselves part of a very elite club!
Absolutely one of the best Delos episodes. Thank you guys and gals for sharing, Epic!! I can’t figure out who would ever not hit a like for this video. Yes this is a older episode but it’s one of the greatest.
5 Atlantic crossings, a sinking on the Isle Europa, rescued by the French Navy. Been there, done that. Great life though. Your vessel is far more luxurious than the vessels I sailed on.
I was practically raised on the water but I must say guys that was some sailing. You show confidence in your crew and the boat which is really important for moral at times like this. I generally prefer to hand steer in very heavy swell like that. You get a feedback and feel for the rhythm and stresses of the vessel which auto pilots often fight against - hence the beating up they take.
Would you terribly mind if i tie my dingy to Delos and bum a ride around the world with you guys, i can be on full-time whale watch or something. You've inspired me keep up the goodwork - u guys rock.
I have enjoyed going back over many of your older episodes, being somewhat newer as a follower of you guys. Interesting you published this on my bday, was 55 that day and would have loved to have been sailing the Indian instead of whatever I was doing. Keep it up brothers and Karen! This was a great presentation.
8:15 that footage and editing well done mate! i would sh!t myself the way that boat pitch left over that wave 9:07 but you had your feet up like you were watching TV, lmao
Brain, a good diagnostic flow to use is symptom, system, component, cause. You skipped the last step on the auto pilot :-) first identify the symptom. can be obvious or not so obvious. then identify the system that is malfunctioning. again can be obvious or not so obvious identify the part/component that is damaged find out WHY it's damaged. sometimes it's just a wear item such as belts or brushes but if you've got more than just normal wear you should look a little deeper during diagnostics than just replacing the damaged part. I was taught this in automotive/diesel college. Cheers!
That weather starting at 10 minutes on was crazy. Great b-roll of the stormy seas and nice editing. Looked like between 8 and 9 on the Beaufort scale. Glad to see SV Delos made it safety to harbor. All the best to the Delos crew. Cheers!
I've been watching your videos for almost 2 years I think. Damn you guys piss me off!! And every Thursday night I hate you some more!!! It used to be I had to wait 2 weeks for my anger issues, now you bring 'em weekly. Bastards!! AND YOU BETTER NOT STOP!!! Beaufort scale 8??
I've been traveling around for some time now the "traditional" way by planes and trains, working along the way to keep myself sustained. These videos reaaallly make me excited to give different ways of traveling a try. Especially sailing! Thanks guys for being inspiration and showing it is possible!
Warble! Legit Brian and well placed. A warble is usually an imperfection in music, like a note played on a guitar that has a "warble" or "warbeled" or "warbels" but it works well just where you placed it. Two leasons the sea teaches 1.) Never use autopilot in the high seas with lots of wind, you'll burn autopilots out like crazy. 2.) Usually 'run' from gale force winds and high seas even if that means going miles out of your way. Why? To save yourself from taking air into the impeller. Glad you guys are safe, love seeing the videos. Keep them going!
I've watched every episode, and this is by far your best. I appreciate the sailing that you're doing, the problems that you're encountering (e.g. Autopilot), and how you overcome them. You're living my dream. Thanks. I'll be buying an Amel in the next four years. Thanks for confirming that choice. I watch for your sailing, your overcoming adversity, and what I can learn, not (so much) the land-based tours and parties. Thanks so.much. John
You really capture the sea state in this episode, the best I have seen it anyway, you can really feel it, thank you Delos for all the excellent episodes and years more to come I hope.
Watching this video....hearing the wind roaring, seeing the waves and the subtle mood you all maintain while braving those crazy waters....I'm so damn hooked on the Delos channel....a couple weeks ago you uploaded a video ten minutes before I had to go to work.....so I was late. Haha fuck it. Love what you're doing you guys! THANK YOU for sharing it with the world. Such an admirable path you all have chosen. Cheers!
OMG Delos... I know you've said in the past that video never quite captures the size of the swells and if that is indeed the case you guys must have been sailing between monsters! That was so thrilling just to watch, I can't imagine what it was like to actually be out there in the middle of a raging indian ocean, with just each other and trusty Delos to rely on. Much respect.
You guys have me searching for a ketch! I'm sold on the benefits of the sail plan and the safety factors that setup brings. Thank you guys for taking the time to create, edit and post your videos! Edit: THOSE WAVES AT 9ish ARE INSANE! What does it feel like to be 6 or 700 miles from land? There's a man who was doing the solo circumnavigation race and his keel broke off when he was asleep. He was also in the southern ocean in conditions like you were in at the 9ish minute mark. The boat instantly, violently flipped over. He had the presence of mind to hurry into his survival suit and stay in the cabin of the upside down boat. He stayed there for 5 days and was rescued by the Australian navy, who was extremely surprised to find him alive inside his overturned boat. There's a video of the actual rescue. If he had gotten out of the boat he most likely wouldn't have survived. He was in the water for 5 days but he was in a protected, albeit pitch black area. The Navy deployed a little dingy and they began pounding on the bottom of the boat. It looks like the dingy was starting to head back to the ship and he suddenly appeared in the water and began swimming towards the dingy! Was awesome!! That Brit is one tough man!
Hey guys, really enjoying these latest videos. Less T&A (you lose me there) and more sailing, problem solving and passing on your extensive experience. Having done a few miles myself I really appreciate the effort to produce a more doco style series that is not too "dry". All in all, very inspiring stuff!
