Sailing to Catalina Island Aboard Spencer Tracy's Sailboat "RESOLUTE" 

How exciting this was to watch! I'm getting my jet-boat ready to go right now! In 1979, I had lunch with Katherine Hepburn and her friend in Glendale, CA before she went to visit Spenser Tracy's gravesite placing flowers! She was an awesome lady! Both Spenser and Katherine were outstanding actors, and great humanitarians!

When I was a high school age mariner girl scout our troop chartered the Resolute for a 5 day trip to Catalina. I would have loved to see that boat again and share it with my children. So sorry they no longer charter it.

This video made me realize how special my upbringing was...my dad has had a sailboat all my life (going from renting/timeshare to owning outright) and I've spent countless hours sailing around San Diego. How lucky I am to grow up on the sea. I want to sail more and more as my dad ages, because there's never enough more time to make memories.

Well I found your channel about a week ago and have been binge watching ever since. This is certainly my favorite adventure so far. Be a Florida boy and growing up on the water being on boats and fishing this problem back wonderful, wonderful memories. Thank you for that. You do a wonderful job narrating the videos and they are amazingly informative. Can't wait to watch some more, great job young man...... and young lady

I dont comment much on youtube, but this video deserves one. This adventure was such a joy to watch, and it was one of the most fun videos you've made, IMO. Well done, and I hope to see more like it! The crew seemed like wonderful people, and the mix of history and just living in the moment was perfect.

When I was in the Girl Scouts in the 70s, I had the opportunity to spend a week on the Resolute - sailing to and around Catalina Island. Such great memories of sleeping on the deck at night under the stars.

The moments with the dolphins diving and racing around the boat were incredible. I can imagine feeling the cool breeze mixed with the sun streaming down, and the dolphins exude such simple, pure joy in the way they glide through the water. The view from the boat was just breathtaking at so many points in the voyage. Thank you for taking the time to film and put this together, as someone who is physically disabled and will never get to experience this in real life, it’s a treasure to experience it in such a vivid way through the sights, sounds and stories you bring together here.

This made my heart sing!! Have made this same trip at least 6 times, albeit several years ago now! I've slept on the deck, cooked on the grill, taken trips in the dingy, felt the wind in my hair standing on the bowsprit, hoisted the sales, steered toward the 'notch' in the mountains, etc., etc. So great to see the video, as technology was barely going digital at the time I made my first voyage, which was coincidentally a retreat to plan for a technology conference! Many thanks to my friend Craig Blurton for instilling the love of sailing in my veins. Capt. Mike holds a special place in my heart, and always will!

I would love to go back to Catalina island. Last time I was there I was probably 11 or 12ish and before we got on the ferry we stayed a night aboard the Queen Mary. My family didn’t like staying aboard a historic ship for some reason but I thought it was really cool. Catalina island is a beautiful place.

So great to see a vintage boat kept up and still sailing.

Thanks for taking us along. It was very therapeutic to see the blue waters… the wind in the sails along with the gentle rocking of this sturdy …well worn wooden craft. Weather was great… vistas were incomparable. We could almost taste that great food… and we all know how a sea breeze and exercise can drum up an appetite. Almost an excerpt from a summer novel it was. Stay safe … and stay well. 🇨🇦

It's great seeing this old sailing vessel still being cared for and used and hope that continues for many more years to come. I love all Spencer Tracy movies, and one of my favorites that sticks out is Captains Courageous

Two of the first movies I can remember watching as a kid were "Northwest passage" and "boys town" both with Spencer Tracy. I was born in 87 but can remember a lot of old time movies because my grandparents watched a lot of older movies when I spent the weekends with them. Glad I had that opportunity and experience. Otherwise I might not of known the classics. Prefer the classics more than I do modern movies in a lot of ways. A lot of good memories of my grandparents when I watch the classics. Also. I'm not 100% sure. But I think Spencer Tracy was the last (or one of the last) people to talk to Bogart before he died. Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy seen Humphrey Bogart just before he passed away. Before Spencer and Katherine left they shook Bogarts hand. Bogie told Spencer "So long, Spenc". They (Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn) both knew he was on his way out and it wouldn't be long. Humphrey Bogart Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Three of the greatest right there....

This was a great adventure! Such a nice nostalgic feeling I get. My dad had a sail boat when i was growing up and we did this trip all the time from Long Beach. So many good memories. I love the “old timey” vibes you guys have! Your wife is the cutest!

Oh many thanks for the memories....I sailed on her somewhere between '64-65 with a small Mariner Svout (Girl Scouts) aboard. About the same set up and slept on deck under a cavas slung over the boom. Somewhere I have a photo of the California in the lead followed astern by the Resolute. It is a fantastic memory. I got a lot of extra history on it all via this wonderful video, Whites Landing was a girl Scout Camp at the time...have no idea if it still exists.Thank you from mid Willamette Valley in Oregon

I was born in LA in 57 and my family often visited Catalina Island. I have pic of my Grandmother there in the 20's and mom and my Aunts there in the 40's. I moved North many years ago, but when I return I always stay aboard the Queen mary and try and visit Catalina. Thanks so much for posting this video. Funny the guy mentions “Zane Grey”… my RU-vid persona name not withstanding as “The Lone Star Ranger” / “Last of the Duanes”, he was Ernest Hemmingway’s inspiration for “Old Man and the Sea” during his trip to Tahiti. He went with Zane Grey’s son, and they watched the famously infamous catching of the first two-gilled marlin that set the Pacific record… a foul-hook in the gills followed by 400 pounds of tail flesh being removed by sharks, fought off by Grey, his brother, and two friends just to get the 1,400+ pound fish to the beach. Grey fed the entire island with that fish. I’ve read Zane’s accounts of fishing Catalina in the 1920s, and they’re as amazingly written as his Western novels. Fun fact: I am related to Zane Grey. How? Me to know, y’all to wonder. And not just my choice for online persona name, either. ;)
