I love the hand signals, they seem really positive, I'm sure people would like to know a little more about them, cheaper than headsets. You have a great lifestyle, Emma is a lucky girl, she will have wonderful life experience's to call on in later life. My own sailing experience was sailing the Nth East coast of New Zealand in a small 23ft keelboat we had a great time, but age is catching up on me, so I don't sail anymore, I suppose 70 years of sailing is OK. I've had my share LOL The best of luck guys, enjoy your sailing as much as I did. Love from down under
I was stationed on a 95 foot coast guard cutter in Morro Bay. The harbor masters office has a photo of George c Scott's yacht being flipped by a huge wave at the entrance, - that entrance can be very dangerous. But a beautiful place.
Emma makes the most informative mini documentaries of places and things that you guys visit. This beautiful little girl once grown will have a wealth of information not available in public schools. Ps. curious parent? What's her motivation?
Great video again this week, my dog Jack loved watching compass running up and down the beach, yes, l had to rewind it several times…..lol Keep up the good work guys, love watching your adventures…… Jack n Steve
Nice video. I sailed up solo to Morro Bay in June from San Diego. It was my first time around Pt Conception. Anchored at Cojo until about 1am to let winds and sea state mellow. I had a whale breach just off Morro Rock as I was approaching. Morro Bay Yacht Club is full of great folks. They let me tie up at the dock for the night I spent there and invited me in for the Tuesday hamburger night. The sail back down to San Miguel Island was boisterous and memorable. I love the way you guys use hand signals when mooring, anchoring.
I think its Emma's sneakers that are attracting the flies..they are attracted to yellow.Ive worked in full-time motorsport most of my time and the Dunlop boys who changed our tyres always had a huge yellow awning in their truck and had to wear yellow shirts and they suffered. Im sure one time at Mugello in Italy they had a white awning shipped in it was that bad...I love your channel it makes me all happy every week, easily the best sailing channel on the internet, take care all of you. #compassrocks
We happened to run into a Peregrine Falcon group who were observing them on our hike around the rock. They were kind enough to let us see them from their scope. Great people in Morro Bay.
I remember hearing about the nesting Peregrine Falcons on Morro Bay rock, someone stole one of the chicks and the authorities offered a reward for information about who did it, two days later it was returned. Then they installed cameras to monitor their nest. You guys always put out great episodes with really good videography, keep up the good work.
That's unfortunate to hear. When we were at the Rock, there was a group of enthusiasts observing the Peregrine Falcons and invited us to use their scopes to see them. Beautiful creatures. Thanks for following our adventures!
I love your videos. I really appreciate how your family goes about your sailing life. Your thought of safety and contingencies are a great example of how to adventure without taking unnecessary risks. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us all. Love and appreciation from Utah.
Yup. That's a rock alright. ;) Interesting the mist seemed to be clinging to it when you pulled in. I can see why the put mooring balls everywhere. I wouldn't want to just rely on the anchor with that much current to deal with constantly. If CA is smart they will put that power plant back into operation.
I luv watchng you all each week. have seen from day1. we r in lockdown here in Auckland NZ for another 2 weeks at least but watching u guys helps so much whatever you ha going on. such smiles emma and her Mom have... Best from way south.
I'm originally from the area. Grew up there. San Luis obispo. I just wanted to comment because filming the entering the bay is the only perspective that I hadn't experienced. Thanks for that. Yes, the fishing is phenomenal.
We brought our 75 foot boat from Monterey to Morro Bay. In some of the restaurants there they have photos of the swell crossing the jetties, absolutely incredible. That harbor can be one of the hardest ports to get into. They lose the south channel marker every year. Underneath the piers the eel grass can be so thick, you could basically walk on it. Your videos are great and look forward to seeing your adventures. Safe travels and watch the weather conditions around Pt. conception real closely. Best time to go around it is a couple hours before daylight.
She still plays the violin, but it's now a bit small for her. We have been on the lookout for a full size violin 🎻 for a while now. Hoping we find one before we leave for Mexico.
Every time you say "Previously' I'm reminded of the episode opening on every Battlestar Gallactica. Fortunately no Cylons... Also, it's illegal to climb on Morro Rock which is a granite plug from an extinct volcano. Much like the various granite domes you see all through the pacific northwest.
Another great video. At 10:29 when you are in the dinghy there is a 43’ Hatteras MY in the background. We had one in Toronto for a number of years. Lived-aboard for three full years and spent five to six month onboard every summer the other years. Miss it at times!
Hi guys! We are so glad to see you traveling and most importantly, seeing Emma have such a great life, taking it all in happily while learning. I wish my earlier years could have been so exciting. She is so well educated not only due to the amazing job you guys are doing as parents, but her love of reading and learning in general, and what a wonderful way to learn! Awesome video guys! Really enjoyed it! Tim and Tammie
Thanks guys! Emma is a sponge when it comes to learning anything new. We are pretty lucky to have such a great kid. She is excited to get her curriculum for this school year.
Now you kids are getting closer to my home port of San Diego. I’m hoping to at least come down there to see your mooring, better yet, maybe you will have a gathering of subscribers/patrons!
Emma's narration is great. We were wondering what the smoke stacks were from. Could you sometime describe Teal's hands signals when picking up and leaving the mooring? We are watching from Newcastle island marine park off Naniamo BC.
We will go into our hand signals soon. We are not fans of yelling or headsets and this method has worked for us for the past 20 years of sailing. Too many times we see feeling get hurt during docking, picking up mooring balls, and anchoring so this works. Hi to you in Nanaimo BC! Its beautiful there!
For some unknown reason there are more fly's and kelp here on the Central Coast then ever before. As for the tourist it's that way every summer and weekend. Everyone comes to Morrow Bay because of the great beaches. Maybe they brought the fly's? Just joking. Have a safe trip.
Morro means also snout in Spanish, which is what that rock and many other rocks called morro look like (somehow :)). So you can say "El morro de Compass es muy pequeño" which means "Compass' snout is very small"... so, how is your Spanish?! You're going to need it! 😝
@@OnboardLifestyle hehe, you got 250 miles left to polish it! Just kidding :) Nice to see that you are, bit by bit, reaching the sunny latitudes you have worked so hard to reach :)
Hearst Castle has been in the news lately, sad, but it seems it is up for auction soon. The owner of 5 years has a debt of over 50 million on the property.
Whoa! I just found your channel, know San Simeon well and have visited Hearst Castle, too bad it was closed, it’s opulence beyond words, …I’m watching from Tahiti! I know Morro Bay well, spent the summers there with my grandmother during the late 50’s and 60’s and lived there a few years mid-eighties, I’ve fished off the pier where you ate, watched them doing a 24 hour continuous pour on the stacks, up until the early 60’s we could hike up Morro Rock, the trail started on the north side, …and much more, thanks for the memories. I took my Tahitian Vahine wife on vacation in ’98 and she fed the squirrels peanuts, first time she had seen them, behind where you were walking away from the Rock, …when you arrive in Avila there used to be a restaurant next to the boat yard named the Cat’s, …excellent fish and chips, …and if it’s still there, ….at the pier in Pismo there is a restaurant that was rated the best Pismo clam chowder in California, …most delicious, and just next door in Grover Beach during strawberry season they sell them on the street and they're the size of lemons, as you sail past Oceano Beach, …I moved a lot of sand there with my dune buggy and at the south end of the beach you’ll see a dune mountain named Devil’s slide, …looking forward to following you on your adventure.
The vessel behind them where they ate on the T pier is the Windwalker. It was built several miles inland then sat for nearly a decade. You may have noticed it out along Hwy 41. I didn't mention that if they stopped in Morro they should visit the Natural History Museum and certainly go to the Hauf Brau which has it's own dingy dock.
@@secretsquirrel6308 I left Morro Bay in '87 and moved to Nevada before coming to Tahiti, ...I think I vaguely remember a boat being built alongside 41, ...but that was decades ago, ...could it be the same one?
@@Katifda Yeah, I am pretty sure it is same boat. I moved from SLO CO in 2006 after 30+ years there. I reckon it is the same except more people/less elbow room.
Hearst Castle is nice...beautiful and unique architecture...however....the FLIES do take away from the experience. Also, believe it or not, on a sunny day that elevation is uncomfortably hot. Im sure Emma will have a chance to check it out in the future.... Nice episode! Btw...I' ve developed a blind spot from the reflection off of Teals legs...thanks alot dude. 😳
It's interesting to notice the safety precautions you use while sailing. More specifically, the crew wearing life vests, even when in the protection of the cockpit. Then I watch another sailing channel, with kids, and even though the said boat is crossing an ocean, the parents and kids are running around the deck (catamaran) wearing no life vest. I side with your precautions.
We know this coast is not a coast to be taken lightly. It's easier to wear them than to regret it in an instant. As we head into safer and warmer waters, we may shed the constant wear of our life vest. Teal only takes calculated risks with the crew. 😊
Coast Guard requires that PFDs for every person on board be easily accessible and in good working order. It's only RU-vid viewers who require they be worn at all times, whether conditions require it or not.
8:14 Ahhh, The signs of old age are starting.... I was thinking, with the clearance below the captain's chair, it seems to me that a flip down footrest/perch could be fashioned for those of you who are vertically challenged.
@@OnboardLifestyle Maybe, just maybe you can sweet talk Teal into visiting them on the return trip. There is also a good one an hour away from the Napa stop in Rocklin called Davis Dean Cellars you can visit also
We plan on it! Need to wait for hurricane season to be over then we are there. In the meantime, this is the best time to be sailing in SoCal. We have a few things to take care of as well as exploring the Channel Islands. 😊
Cool harbor. Do you ever use metal detectors on a beach ? Just a thought. I would love to see 4-6 more solar panels on your roof. Also, how much rainwater could you catch. Thank you for another episode
@@tealgoben1781 FYI - When you first mentioned the drone strike I found a Reddit sub-reddit for the area where it occurred and posted a message saying you were looking for the owner to return it but got no response.
I too miss all of teals wonderful workmanship but he deserves a long break and enjoy with pride all of his countless hours of tlc he slaved to accomplish .... I just look at sv basik in awe of his accomplishment.....and dream.
I've never stepped foot on a sailboat so forgive my stupid question. Wouldn't it be easier to catch the mooring buoy from the dingy and then transfer the line to someone on the boat? That looked like some anxiety filled piloting action you guys were trying to pull off there??? I noticed the very next scene after mooring was of you guys riding in the dingy. So I'm thinking you were going to put it in the water anyway.
Adding the dinghy to the mix just makes the chances of something going wrong greater, especially with that kind of current. I pick up moorings solo as I have no crew (family or friends onboard).
