Hello again! In this video we sail to the island of Cabrera, a National Park in the Balearics. We're lucky to get a spot there in high season and start to make our way down from the North of Mallorca.
We stop for a night in what could be the best or worst anchorage that we have all to ourselves! And we sail on the next day to Cabrera, where we spend 24 hours. We go for a nice long hike, a good swim and free dive before having to leave. We're so excited about being able to sail again in this one after lots of motoring recently!
Thank you to our Patrons!
Recorded in August 2021.

EASY TO AVOID MOORING BALL BANGING Hi guys, we really love your videos. Especially like the latest which reminded us of our cruise to Cabrera a few years ago. By the way with your boat there is a super easy solution to “mooring ball attacks” that occur on quiet nights when there isn’t enough wind to keep the ball off the bow. Add a short line from the end of the bowsprit to the mooring ball; we use small diameter line (3/8 inch diameter for 23,000 lb displacement). This line is in addition to our regular heavier & longer mooring lines which are lead through the hawse pipes. The small line should be short enough so the ball won’t hit the boat when it drifts back. That is the advantage of the long bowsprit. When it blows, the boat will hang from your regular, heavier mooring lines if they are adjusted right. We also like to lead this smaller line thru a block on the end of bowsprit back to one of the hawse pipes so it can be adjusted, too, again to avoid banging or lengthened in heavier wind when you want to increase your scope (we use the line as a snubber at anchor so we like to be able to have enough line to substantially increase our scope, if needed). Give it a try and see if it works for you. Karl & Mary Beth s/v HATTIE LEE

You can get two pool noodles and slide them over the mooring lines from your boat to the buoy. That usually keeps the buoy far enough away from the bow of the boat. :)

Thanks for another great video. In Europe you can buy two-stoke outboards for 'non-recreational' use. If challenged, you have it for fishing, rescue, taxi, racing, survey, conservation ... anything but recreation!

And again! Spring has come early ;-D. On banging into buoy matter I usually strategically place the fenders to avoid being woken up but sometimes it’s a fail. I know how frustrating it is sleeping and hearing that sound below (10 x amplified) aaarrrhh

Love the longer video. Thank you very much. So your plans are unsettled. However I remember a comment that you were not ready to cross the Atlantic this year, and a snippet in this video about needing a more powerful motor. I hope your plans come to fruition down the road. I would love to see new things and places through your eyes. Stay safe.

Let us not forget Bernoulli's principle: p + 12 ρ v2 + ρgh =constant...hahah...another sailor is always telling me this to understand how my sails work.

No single thing to avoid buoy bashing. If room to do so having a long line to it helps a bit. In no wind/tide/swell and the buoy is suitable you can hoist it a bit out of the water - and loop a line under it to hold it against the bow. Sometimes you can get the smaller ones on deck and use the sinker chain. Easiest option is to tie it up to the opposite end you're sleeping in!

Would it be possible to do an update on your D400 and Solar System and how well it keeps all things charged up and ready to go, I have a D400 and was looking for other thoughts with those who have this system?

I hope you also purchased carbon rebuild kit for that new outboard. Here in the US and the Caribbean 2 strokes are not available and parts maybe not available.

@robertfreeman2322 2 года назад
What part of the U.S. doesn't carry 2 stroke parts anymore? I still see used ones for sale and plenty of parts especially 50 hp and under.
@matthewbaynham6286
@matthewbaynham6286 2 года назад
If no one sells 2 stroke outboard engines in the EU, then surely that also means they also don't sell spare parts for 2 stroke outboards in the EU. I hope our 2 stroke outboard doesn't go wrong whilst you're in the EU.
@robertfreeman2322
@robertfreeman2322 2 года назад
There are thousands of 2 strokes in the EU that were bought before the new regulations, they just don't sell new ones anymore. They absolutely still fix and repair 2 strokes as it's probably 75 percent of their business. Give it 25 years and maybe not so much.

The reason the sale of two-stroke outboards are being banned in so many places is because they discharge a large amount of unburned fuel into the water. Petroleum fuel is very harmful to many marine environments, and especially harmful to coral reefs. The coral reefs in the Caribbean have dramatically declined in recent decades. Two-stroke outboards, while not the only factor, contribute significantly to that decline. And since two-strokes are so fuel inefficient, you will need to carry substantially more expensive fuel, much of which will be wasted and sadly contribute to degrading the reefs.

we got ours for 1600€. A good deal but can tell it's not made as well as a Yamaha, but still works great for us!
