Here is a short demonstration of sailing-by-the-lee a Goat Island Skiff. The designer, Michael Storer is narrating the video as we are sailing up the coast during the Texas 200 sailing event in June 2011. The wind is blowing around 10mph and we are sailing in very flat water in the protected waters along the ICW, Inter-coastal Waterway early in the morning.
We found that the Goat Island Skiff is very stable in both light winds and strong winds with big waves while sailing by the lee. We sailed with full sail and our deep #3 reef practicing by-the-lee sailing. In the video we are using the #1 reef points.
As Michael is adjusting the main sheet the helm shifts slightly from weather helm to more neutral. When the boat is leaning to the left, leeward side, the helm becomes more neutral as the boat leans right, windward, you can feel more weather helm.
