SAINT AND GREAVSIE - BUILD UP TO THE FA CUP FINAL 1988 - LIVERPOOL FC V WIMBLEDON FC - 14TH MAY 1988
This was the last FA Cup final to be broadcast by both ITV and the BBC, which had happened since 1958.The result was one of the biggest shocks in the history of the FA Cup Finals as the London side won 1-0 to win the cup for the only time in their history. The final also featured the first penalty save in an FA Cup final (by Dave Beasant from John Aldridge) and the first goalkeeper (Beasant) to captain an FA Cup-winning side.

Anyone born after about 1990 will never know just how big the FA cup used to be...cup final Saturday was footballing utopia .. the 1988 final was probably the last of the great old fashioned finals...Hillsborough happened a year later and the competition was never really the same again..

Yep I agree. It's terrible nowadays. The magic truly has gone from what it used to be.

Remember watching this well in the early summer of 1988 on tv. It was a sizzling day all over the country that Saturday. The times when the FA Cup meant everything for players, clubs and fans before the greed of Sky Tv ruined it over the following two decades. I had just finished senior school in '88 so this year will always be a landmark year for me.

Loving these old video's of the time when football was better. The interview with Nigel Clough, scoring over 20 goals - these days we are so starved of success and decent English players, he'd have had a new contract, picked for england and dropped from his country and club before having a newspaper scandal - all in the same season. Football as of 2016 is boring, insipid and is all the worse for globalisation. The game's gone.

Amazing! I was working for Principles for Men in Liverpool at the time and we kitted the team out with the blazers etc. Met the whole Liverpool team, they were a great bunch and are the reason I have followed LFC ever since. Great memories!

God damn Wimbledon...they beat one of, arguably the best teams the league had seen. Pre - Hillsborough seems like heaven looking back

Ask Ossie Ardiles how big the FA Cup was. He said winning it in ‘81 was 2nd , and only just 2nd, to winning the World Cup with Argentina. It was equal to , and for some, more important than winning the league.

Thanks for sharing. Great memories of what the build up and true excitement of what the FA Cup Final really meant. Can't exactly say the same these days, especially at the top level.

+Greig Stott I couldn't have put it better myself mate. I was a heartbroken 8 year old Kopite in 1988 after this final but like you say, the build up to FA Cup Finals back then was first class, on both BBC and ITV. Nowadays, it's just become another game.

Wot no ads.. the reason LFC it took so long to win the title again was Kenny resigning, that wasn't the plan & the Boot Room went into meltdown.

If Dalglish wasn't so arrogant in not naming himself one of the two subs, had he played Liverpool would've won the Final. Also costly error not putting Johnson in the starting 11 just because he was leaving the club after this last ever game for Liverpool cost them the win as well.

This was easily my favourite FA Cup final outside the ones my team won. I just couldn't wait to get to school on the Monday morning to rip my redshite mates who thought their side only had to turn up to win.

There's no doubt these were better times for society but the football today is generally far better quality than it was 30 years ago. We all see romance in nostalgia and while I do miss the 80's, I'd rather watch Virgil Van Dyke than Vinny Jones play. More than anything I miss is the charachters in football we used to have. People who used to speak their minds, have a personality or be a bit odd. Footballers minds are either too sanitised now or just plain boring. In fact football has become far too PC. It's damaging the game and I feel it will get worse.

distantvoices how I agree with every single thing you have said here. Football has become a non tackling, no atmosphere, money soaked joke. I used to love going to watch United every week back in the 80’s and early 90’s. And even though we won everything in the 90’s and 00’s , I’d still take my time going in the 80’s.

Gary Ablett sad he passed Away. Always looked a bit nervous in a Liverpool shirt to me.Thats where Kenny got it wrong here in my honest heartfelt opinion he shouldve stuck tried and tested more by those that delivered in 1986 Ronnie Whelan had scored sgainst WIMBLEDON in the season Can play as a defensive or attacking midfielder Molby was more of the sweeper tremondous passer as good as anyone past present or future. Ronnie wouldve been better to play than a Gary in Defense. Nicol Hansen Gillespie even Speckman wouldve better . Well Molby Mcmahon Johnstone Barnes Midfield Aldridge and Bearsdley up front. Different result. . Congratulations to WIMBLEDON regardless.
