Love these nostalgia trips. 80s and the very early 90s - great days and the end of the real era of football. The Peoples game about to transition into the Corporates Game.

Totally agree. End of an era feel about football at this time. Especially 1991/92 season.

Exactly. Now it’s scary what Pep has already achieved at City and he’s only just over 50!!!

One factor was the fact that he was badly effected from Heysel and Hillsborough the former 3 times he won the League as a manager the 1986 double team, the 1988 record breakers and the 1990 title side due to the ban on English clubs in Europe he was denied the opportunity to test those 3 sides in the European Cup and not only win Liverpool a 5th European Cup but become the first man to win the European Cup as a player and a manager. But Hillsborough hit him the hardest

And just a few months later he was manager of newly minted Blackburn Rovers. The pressure story never added up with me. More like he fell out with the club over funding the rebuild of what was an ageing squad. United were also beginning to look like future title contenders and Kenny knew that he would require big money to meet Ferguson head on. Played his cards very well did Kenny.

I think dalglish could see that Liverpool needed a team overhaul because he could see that that squad was coming to an end of challenging for titles but he probably didn’t have the energy to do it. He might have just needed a change of scenery as well
@thelstanedwardsson4374
@thelstanedwardsson4374 3 года назад
Hi again. 😊👍🏻 I agree to a certain degree, but I don't think the team needed a complete overhaul... some slight changes but nothing drastic. Rush wasn't the potent force he was, needed a striker like Fowler alongside him to take on the pace - but came a little too late. If you watch the highlights of the matches between Arsenal and Liverpool, despite being 3-0 and 1-0 to Arsenal, the 3-0 flattered Arsenal and the 1-0 loss was a bit of a steal by Arsenal. There wasn't much between Arsenal and Liverpool. Man Utd, as you know were sneaking up though... 😊👍🏻

@@thelstanedwardsson4374 hello again!! You’re right about Arsenal against Liverpool that season. Liverpool’s problem that season was defensive. Plus too many injuries. The loss of Hansen affected them more than they thought it would. Hysen wasn’t anywhere near as good.

If it was me, I would have chosen Phil Thompson as manager with Roy Evans and Ronnie Moran as his assistants. All 3 were Liverpool through and through and were from the inside. On the other hand, Souness had spent the past few years in Italy and Scotland therefore had no idea of what worked best at Anfield. Despite winning the FA Cup which he never did as a player, he made some average to poor signings (his best was Rob Jones although David James wasn't bad) and didn't make an effort to boost their midfield and defence which were sadly lacking. They needed a Gary McAllister and a Roy Keane plus a defender of the Des Walker/John Terry type then they would have definitely mounted a title challenge against Man Utd.

No. They were jaded and United had the desire. They're set up now for another period of success at Anfield, but back then there was a lot to rebuild and the youth wasn't coming through. (Mcmanaman and Fowler excluded)

@@ciansheridan7689 The club was in temporary decline when Dalglish resigned in 1991. As Brian Moore said on TV, Liverpool were still joint top with Arsenal. They still had a great squad. There was no need to rush changes, it should have been done gradually with someone with a wise mature head. 37 year old Souness came in and sold Beardsley, Staunton, Ablett, Gillespie, McMahon all within three months. Then Houghton left a year later ( I assume Houghton wanted to get out). Thirty years on, I am still scratching my head why he sold Staunton who was a good utility player. Beardsley exit was a ridiculous decision. Then to make matters worse he purchased Dean Saunders, Mark Walters, Julian Dicks, Paul Stewart, Nigel Clough, all players who were not of Liverpool title winning standard. Not only that, he brought in Mark Wright, and made him immediate captain over Ronnie Whelan who was there since 1979 and was vice captain behind Hansen. And it is well documented, Souness organised the contracts and payed the new players more wages than the players already there who won championships!! Souness was also forced to bring through McManaman, Renapp, Fowler, Hutchison, Tanner, Jones, Marsh. Marsh, Tanner and Hutchsion were not good enough. Only Mcmanaman and Rob Jones was ready phsyically and mentally to play every week. Souness did buy David James. David was very talented but unfortunately was as wacky as Bruce Grobbelaar! I was at a few matches where David made ludicrous errors. Souness also contrived to fall out with all of the remaining senior players so team spirit was shot to pieces. Souness actually put Ronnie Whelan on the transfer list in 1993 on Ronnie's birthday! Michael Thomas and Mark Wright were his better signings but both got injured a lot while he was there. Roy Evans got the best of them in the mid 1990s. Neil Ruddock? Jury is out on him whether he was any good. Michael Thomas did an interview recently where he said he thought he was coming in to learn the Liverpool way off McMahon and Whelan, next minute McMahon was gone! When Souness finally resigned in January 1994, everyone was delighted to get rid of him. Souness was too young, the job was too big for him. Final analysis? Souness ruined the club!!
@mrkipling2201
@mrkipling2201 3 года назад
I think injuries and Hansen retiring was a big factor in Liverpool not winning the league in 1990/91. After that the players got older and left and weren’t replaced with players of similar quality as you said.
