Men are born to fight. Men are generals, soldiers, lawyers, rulers, admirals, police. We were born to struggle. We were born to overcome. We were born to practice fortitude. We were born to fight. The reason we naturally do this is simple. Men are born with stronger concupiscible and irascible appetites. St. Thomas explains that our senses desire certain things. The sort of things we desire can be broken up into two separate categories: concupiscible and irascible. The concupiscible desires what is pleasant, while defending one’s home, family, country, or faith . . . these are all desires arising in the irascible appetite. Men, in order to acquire sanctity, must learn to subject their passions . . . To be a Catholic man; to be a Catholic gentleman. This is what we all, hopefully, aspire to. And God has given us an excellent example of this in St. Francis de Sales. A man with a concupiscible appetite, but who used it to become a spouse and father for the Church. A man with a strong irascible appetite, but who used it to fight for Christ and combat heresy. A man who had strong appetites, but who subjected them to reason enlightened by faith and charity.
