Why isn't this piece played more often? I had never heard it before and I cannot think why because it is wonderful! Cohesive, with that lovely middle movement and the recurring themes which bind it together. The orchestra never overwhelms the soloist and the cello part is beautifully written and stunningly played here. His intonation is miraculous and his lyricism but also his clarity in the difficult sections. I'm wondering if I've ever heard a cello play . . was it a high G? I shall be listening to more performances of this piece. It's always interesting to compare. Is that snippet of "The swan" that occurs several times deliberate do you think?
@jimp4170
@jimp4170 3 года назад
It's hard to imagine this piece being not played often enough. It's one of the most popular and most frequently performed cello concerti. That said, it's not as difficult as the others. Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Haydn D Major, Schumann, are much more difficult. I imagine cellists prefer the challenges of those to zipping through this. I suspect it's more popular with audiences than it is with cellists of this caliber.

I really like some of these young cellists and their attention to musicality. Even some of the greats just plow through this piece.

I love these new shrunk orchestras - the music gains in clarity and precision and this forms obviously a perfect background for that wonderful interpretation by Bruno Philippe, Christoph Eschenbach and the hr Sinfonieorchester. Thank you all! Danke!!
