That "--37" that briefly pops up in the "How do you defeat Sheng Long" bit around 15:27 is such a supremely condensed teaching moment, despite being presented as a throwaway bit. I love it! The vid's already so long past explaining frame advantage that it's not immediately in the forefront of the viewer's mind, but not too long to quickly come to mind; perfect timing for an "Oh yeah, *that*" moment. It also integrates the concept of "plus/minus on block" into the whiff punish concept that was introduced even earlier in the vid, in a way that immediately contextualizes it at a pace more akin to actual gameplay. And because the bit isn't explicitly called out as such, it allows the viewer to piece it together on their own in a "safer" environment than in actual playtime where a hundred other potential factors can distract from the intended lesson. All of this works together to empower the viewer's ability to understand and analyze the ideas presented, in a reactive way that is much more easily transferrable to the viewer's own playtime. Fricken brilliant!

I appreciate alot of your content, pretty much all of it, but when these kinds of in depth looks, and conversations take place for talent like me. It fills in, little by little, the void that blocks the motivation, inspiration, and all the things you need to get better as a player, and person.

My biggest takeaway from this is, even though every single bit of data in a fighting game is 1s and 0s, how you interpret and apply them is decimal as hell.

over the last year i made ir a goal of mine to get good at fighting games. ive always enjoyed playing them but pretty much was your average 1 minute memorization of the combo screen and then playing a match a couple times and then your done type player. over the last year i ended up getting an arcade stick, finding out what felt right for me, picked a handful of games and have spent the last year playing new games against new people and having fun losing lots and learning how to play. the biggest times i've made strides in understanding how to be good at fighting games and play with intention almost always fall in line in some way with the release of new videos from core A. hahah i've been doing this just out of need to challenge myself after ng+7'ing every dark souls and finding that the games i used to play weren't filling that same need for challenge like dark souls was. fighting games filled that big time, honestly couldn't agree with you enough when talking about gerald and his videos. the dudes videos have not only made me a better player but they make me excited to play these games which i'll admit as a filthy casual i had my moments where playing against anyone that's not a pc had to be a party situation where they probably suck as much as i did.

I play Tekken 7 it's my first and honestly only fighting game. I've been playing over a year now. Trying to get into other fighters. But 2D just doesn't seem to catch me as much as Tekken. I think UNIST is a amazing game though I can't play it well and it's not exactly my cup of tea doesn't mean it's bad. I try SFV and nothing catches me except nostalgia from my childhood characters. I feel so bored playing 2D at times to and watching it sometimes I feel like a solid 20 seconds is devoted to one person holding down back. When I play 2D I get bored very quickly. I really want to branch out but nothing seems as interesting as Tekken to me.

I only noticed now, Core-A says "Ungamentals" instead of fundamentals, damn that cracked me up.

11:00 This was only an issue because Tekken has a 1000 moves that grant combos and it has universal moves but don't stress their importance. In a game like Virtua Fighter, every character has a 12F jab (Some have 11) 14 frame elbow/mid (Vanessa 10F mid from Defensive stance) 12F down jab, and throws 10 frames. (Wolf 9F forward Throw) You can win without any character specific moves. Great tutorial and AI to learn, in-game frame data etc. Point is, Tekken makes itself appear flashy and people assume too much about how it should be played while VF encourages fundamentals out the gate.

My personal issue with playing multiple fighting games is that... I'm retarded. No, seriously, it's my utter inability to separate games (even cross-genre!) when it comes to muscle memory and decision making. So, for example, now, I am messing around with mk11. That required me to basically play like 50 hours in training mode, just in order to stop blocking by down-back all the time, stop whiffing every jump in and stop trying to do link combos. But, that's not all. I played online for a few hours, did way better than expected and I am still blocking with down-back like 20% of the time and all that jazz. The reason I am doing ok online is because I am utilizing fundamentals that are independent from a specific game, as Sajam mentioned, but that's about it. The rest is a major pain in the ass. And that's not the whole story lol. I also mess up buttons (ie think my block is my "heavy kick" etc) and try to whiff punish normals that reach twice the distance I am at. Because I am currently used to sfv, which is stubbier. I even anti air with b2, because I play Ibuki in sfv. Which, with Kitana, doesn't yield the greatest results:) Luckily, I play Kitana, which I think is perfect for a newcommer, due to how focused she is on confirming and EXTREMELY basic mixups and she's quite grounded and can rely on footsies much more than, say Scorpion. So, even if a Scorpion player is better than me in many regards, I still stand a chance, which wouldn't be a case if I played Scorpion, for example. Now, when I decide to mess with sfv again, this will require the whole resetting and learning process. This is the most fucking unrewarding and tedious thing ever. So, basically, I will have to do the whole 50 hours shtick again in order to be at like 70% of myself in sfv before I started playing mk11 and then grind the next 30% for WEEKS, if not months. And only then will I be able to even think about pushing past my former self. This process will, of course, erase mk11 completely and so on and so on. This is so frustrating, not only because of the time, but because the feeling of relearning something so basic and having such a hard time with "riding a bike again" is so defeating. It's one thing to practice something from your current plateau, even if you fail for millions of times. I am no stranger to long and repetitive training room sessions in fighting games. But, it's a completely different thing to relearn something and to have such a horrible pace while doing it. My muscle memory compartmentalization (should we call it that?) is so bad, that this is not only applicable when I try to switch games back and forth, but also when I try to switch characters. It's not even less hours or less work. If I go from Ibuki to Karin, it's the same process, same duration and all. Going back to Ibuki is the same. I even fired up an FPS game once, during a period I played mostly sfv and, I am not lying, the map loaded and I didn't shoot at people for like two minutes and was just dying all over again, because my brain didn't switch to the notion that bullets don't care about distance between players. So, I instinctively wanted to close the distance and play footsies or whatever my stupid brain was trying to do. It didn't help that the perspective was different, control system was different (mouse/keyboard) etc. The good thing is, it lasted for like two minutes of that and the next half an hour or so of missing buttons and having weird muscle memory takeover flashbacks where I wanted to combo someone or something like that. After that, I played really badly, but luckily, the reason for that was that I got rusty. Not that I was trying to combo into super in fucking Quake or something. I love to play fighting games, I think I have majority of even mildly "significant" ones that came out on pc. I played them all. And all of them required painful two weeks or so before and painful two weeks or so after in order for me to play them even close to normal. People usually tell me how playing more games helps with that compartments to settle in, but guys, I have played dozens and dozens of fighting games and these "emptying the glass" periods didn't get a second shorter or anything. Before I wrote this and when Sajam mentioned multiple games, I deliberately went into sfv and queued for a casual match, I don't know why, just because:) And... I did three raw sweeps in a row because I wanted to block low and then I just let go of controls:) It's actually hilarious. Wall of text crits you for 9000 damage! This was just a rant into the aether, I am a moron, have a nice day:)
