lol ya that’s a fact but he’s still the architect of the greatest run in gaming history as well as legitimizing the gaming medium to a western market that wanted nothing to do with story games. Spirits within wasn’t a game. He didn’t fail in his medium. He gambled and lost. The irony is square never recovered. His stories had soul. Plot twists. Death of Aerith was symbolic of him losing his mom and trying to cope with it through his art.

This is a really nice full-circle moment for Sakaguchi. He was ousted from Square after the failure of the FF movie. But he's still here, and now they are publishing his game (first published by Apple, but the exclusivity must have run out). I find it very heartwarming that he's able to have a relationship with his former company and that those still there respect him,

Yoshi P doesn't like the term JRPG so first he got rid of the J (the flavour) and then he got rid of the RPG (the foundation) altogether and we got a game of thrones ripoff / dmc lite, mix of a game that doesn't deserve to be a mainline FF. 11:00 The term JRPG was created to distinguish a style in the RPG that was missing in western or "traditional" RPG's. That style that is found in JRPG's is exactly what caused them to burst into the scene with so many amazing games. The culture, traditions, and views of the Japanese people are part of what makes those games great. For quite some time I sought out those games because they had a bit of a "spark" that was missing in western made games. While games are much more "global" now than they were, I still think there's both a visual and creative design difference between the two and it's still to this day the reason I keep my eye on games coming out from the east.

Seeing too much hate on 16 so I’m gonna give it some love. 16 had one of the best stories to touch the series, easily one of the top games in the series. As far as the combat goes FRESH is nice turn base gets stale and I grew up with the old games and playing legend of dragoon as well as other titles. But the combat had more depth than some people have given it credit for, if you only did cool downs then you played very bland. Needless to say the combat was engaging and fun to learn. Now the controversial rpg element sure it lacked a big ass sphere grid and usually those could be fun to build and figure out but why not have an open mind and just enjoy the game made for you than put chains on a series Yoshi P developed a killer game and it feels like so many aren’t respecting that fact.

im gonna be honest, when i compare ff16 with 7 remake/rebirth, i cant help but think that MOST of the issues people complain about 16 only exist, because Yoshi P was too worried into making 16 more like 14. Well no s***! Even Nintendo mentioned in an old NintendoLife article years old that they literally said to them (him and Square) "Never come back". Right now, Square Enix is simply only using Sakaguchi and his game Fantasian Neo Dimension as a sort of "scapegoat" to cover up all their failures with FF16, 7 Rebirth, and several other games (Foamstars, Harvestella, and more) in hopes of making some money back that they lost. That's never gonna work. He should have gone to Nintendo to publish Fantasian. His game may be end up being good, but Square doesn't deserve money from players as a sort of way to get them back on good graces. It's as if Yoshi-P and many others at Square Enix still have that controversial answer from Phil Fish from years ago still locked into their minds or whatever when he was interviewed by a developer and the answer he said at the time that Japanese games "suck" and they should "get with the times" and be more like what western developers were doing. In all honesty, that answer still lingers within Square because with all the recent game failures and their games not meeting expectations and chasing trends, Square Enix still has that mindset of westernizing their Japanese games and trying to appeal to the wrong type of audience and chasing trends and messing up their gameplay to be more westernized and not being more "niche" and going back to their traditional Japanese RPG roots that fans do want again. Square as they are is so desperate for anything to help get them out of their slump but they refuse to go back to basics.

JRPG being its own category is well deserved. They're not just setting out to make a good game. They're (at least the majority of the time) sticking to their conventions. There's a reason why you only need a quick glance at JRPG to label it as a JRPG yourself. Whether it be Trails series, Final Fantasy, Persona, Tales of, etc. And the Japanese games that don't fit the mold (like Elden Ring) well... They aren't labelled as JRPG. Now compare with western RPG games... Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Pillars of Eternity, etc... They're completely different beasts!

@Shifft-This
@Shifft-This 2 дня назад
@@Mintcar923 I wrote a long well thought out response to this... on my phone... and RU-vid ate it. So I'm going to try one more time from my PC this time. FOREWARNING THIS SHHT IS LONG. Before I begin, please remember that you'll never understand why a moniker or change was made in pop culture without either understanding its history or actually being there and present when it was happening. With that said, the "JRPG" moniker was created by gamers to assist them in setting expectations for the adventure they were about to embark on. My childhood was spent playing JRPG's like Final Fantasy (I really started around the time of 7), Legend of Legaia, Suikoden, Tales of Destiny 2, Star Ocean, and Legend of Dragoon and the differences between these games and "regular" RPG's of that time couldn't be more profound. Let's start at what I believe is the biggest glaring difference. When you play Final Fantasy VII you play as Cloud Strife. Cloud already has history and lore in the game world. He's a Soldier, trained by Shinra and former childhood friend of Tifa. This character already existed in this story before I took control of him. I can go down the list of games I provided in my previous paragraph and give you a historical breakdown of the main protagonist and what they accomplished before I ever gained control of him. The character has history. In western RPG's, the character you play typically has no history outside of what you create for them at the character creation screen. In fact, almost every western RPG HAD a character creation screen. Where you pick their class, race, how they look etc. This is already a major key difference but it goes deeper. In western RPG's your choices would dictate the direction of story. Your character, when given the option would be given a list (sometimes upwards of 7 choices or more) that could drastically dictate where the story ended or even more simply where your character would travel next. In comparison, if you play through the entirety of FF7 there might be 5 times in the game where you're given a choice and it's typically a "Yes" or "No" option and how you answer is irrelevant because you will still need to proceed to the exact same plot point thereafter and the game will end in the exact same way it's supposed to regardless of your choice... which makes sense... because you're playing Cloud and Cloud is going to act like Cloud even if you're the one playing him right now. These differences are huge. The difference between controlling Cloud on his adventure through Final Fantasy VII and playing the character you created in Elder Scrolls: Morrowind are night and day. The same could be said about other western RPG's of their time like Ultima or Wizardy, or Baldur's Gate. These games would allow you to become a villain if you so choose and you could kill people you shouldn't. In Final Fantasy, your character will always be who they are. You as a player have no agency over their actions other than controlling them as they perform them. Keep in mind, I have only listed two key differences: Character Creation and Player Control. But the western and eastern game design around these two key factors make for completely different gaming experiences. Surely anyone that has played both FF7 and Elder Scrolls: Morrowind would agree that even though both of these games are "RPG's" there are more differences between these two gaming experiences than there are similarities which is the reason the "JRPG" moniker was created to begin with. It wasn't to discriminate against eastern RPG's it was an attempt by the players to set expectations for a potential player to understand what kind of RPG experience they were about to partake in. Just to put this in perspective, I'm currently playing Dragon's Dogma 2 (a JRPG) and none of the points I made in this long post would be valid when held up to Dragon's Dogma. The terminology of JRPG was created at a time when the differences between western RPG's and JRPG's were much much more pronounced. Even though differences still exist today, those differences will not be the same as they were in 1997. The reason why there's no such thing as a "J Fighter" or a "J Platformer" is because there was literally no distinguishing difference between a east and west fighters or platformers. The mechanical design of the games were so similar that you couldn't tell them apart. Unlike RPG's. If I finished up an Elder Scrolls game and asked a friend "What RPG should I play next since I loved Elder Scrolls" and he suggested Final Fantasy 7 to me, he would deserve to be slapped in the face as these two games (while both RPG's) have very little in common with each other from a gameplay perspective and in a vacuum you could say they are nothing alike. The thing is... those differences I pointed out between FF7 and Morrowind were (at the time) able to be generalized amongst the broader gaming market. Most Western RPG's allowed you to create your own character, be a villain, and get different endings. Most Eastern RPG's gave you control of a preconceived character, with history and story already behind them, and a linear ending that you would always get upon game completion.

@@Shifft-This I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone here.. There are very distinctive Japanese styles in other genres as well as non Japanese.. Is Blazblu the same stylistically as Mortal Kombat? Is God of War the same stylistically as Bayonetta? Is Super Mario the same stylistically as Prince of Persia? Is Until Dawn the same kind of horror game as Silent Hill? I could go on and on with this.. Even if we went with the ultra nationalist terminology in one genre the concept is at best woefully outdated anyways because technically any game from any region could have any style under the sun especially nowadays.. I just think Yoshi P would know what he’s talking about.. Why would he come out against something if there were no point to it you know? That said I have no reservations about the term J RPG in a non nationalistic way.. Let’s say short for Journey RPGs or Jr RPGs.. We have stuff like Persona in the same genre as Octopath as well as Dragons Dogma.. I mean it just blows my mind.. I've already given enough examples so I won't dive into it deeper. Let's just say that if I play 7 RPG's and 6 of them allow me to create a character and have diverging plot points with multiple endings and then I play the 7th game and I can't create a custom character and it doesn't have diverging plot points/multiple endings I would wonder why the last RPG I played didn't allow me to utilize the same game/genre mechanics that are a staple of that genre that were present in the previous 6 RPG's I played.

RPG/JRPG’s are doing one thing before anything, and that’s telling story. The story can’t be fake but must have truth in it to help people. If not it at the very least be entertaining. 2nd is the gameplay along with saying something to help mankind it better be fun and we just can’t get enough of it. Addictive and fun gameplay. It also has to respect our time as players. Chrono Trigger is the epitome of that along with Dragon Quest XI S. Why FF wants to get away from its roots is puzzling to me. I mean I can also understand wanting to grow and do other things but the fans are the ones buying the stuff. There has to be some stuff in there the fans want while still doing something new. I agree with Irvine. Gameplay is always first. Those snes and psx FFs were like MMOs in single player form.

@@FF8IrvineFan_ I used to think that, but over time I’ve realized they are trying to say something. That determines where the characters go and what they experience and the monsters they fight. So that’s why story and gameplay swapped for me.

no more "dudes look like girls", they over did it in Metaphor.., to pander (why Metaphor got high scores from some non-anime & -Jrpg fans)... Metaphor is good, but not as good as P5R or DQXIS.. ... fear future Jrpgs will pander :/ ... truthfully, in anime dudes that look like girls are often interesting characters, but Metaphor over did it..

Why can't Square Enix have their own Persona? How did they fail at their own game this hard?

Because they didn't want to try anymore, most likely. I'm convinced they're TRYING to kill the series.

@@FF8IrvineFan_ It's not entirely Square, but they're allowing it to happen. If you search you'll see interviews talking about this problem without them... talking about this problem. I can't remember if it was Yoshida or Nomura but during an interview one of them even said that (I'm paraphrasing here) the pressure from people outside of Japan to change the way they are designing games (artistically and mechanically) is so high that they can no longer make a game without getting pushback from various people about the way a character is designed. Put simply, western political correctness (you know what word could replace this) is stamping out creativity at the creative floor as these games are being made all under the guise of "reaching a wider audience".

I don't think anyone who uses that argument realizes that this is not what it means. FF games have always reimagined how they can tackle *turn based combat* , which is what FFI to FFX did. Every single FF game prior to X is full on turn based, heck, XI still has its own sort of turn based with how its system function and XII taking samples out of it shows that, XIII too, is turn based. XIV, back in 1.0, was similar to XI until ARR happened and they made the combat a lot more digestible to modern MMORPG audiences. So far XV and XVI are the only mainline entries that did not use turn based combat. And unlike XVI, XV kept being a RPG. While unfortunately having rather shallow combat in comparison to "watered down DMC Final Fantasy". 🤷 TLDR: No, XVI did not reinvent itself, it's a completely unrelated entry that deserves the title of a (high budget) spin-off rather than being a mainline title. And the MMOs do not count as a counter-argument. Their cases are completely different as multiplayer games.
@ShuraBeem
@ShuraBeem 3 дня назад
I forgot to add that they should not use the same turnbase system but what they can do to improve an already established turn-base system that make FF in general like what new FF7 rebirth and remake did. FF16 if you take away these eikons It won't feel like FF at all and the only character you can control is Clive.

@@ShuraBeem, Games like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default knows how to properly refine and modernize the Turn-Based formula the right way. Which is what FF needs to learn and go back to. Heck, even Dragon Quest continues to do things right.

Sakaguchi in FF14 crafts equipment and sells it on player marketboard calling it Guci wear. Crafted gear info will show the name of player who crafted it seeing his name.
