Considering the time this show came out... (2002 in Japan, 2004 in the USA though the stories of the Manga came out 1999-2002) Yes Sakaki-San was very much too pure for the world of the start of the 21st century. 20 years later she is still pure for this world.
@@nmotschidontwannagivemyrea8932 still very tall as a girl nonetheless and as Azuma had confirmed, she was standing at 5'11'' by the end of the series, terrifyingly tall if you will.
@@nmotschidontwannagivemyrea8932 Yeah I'm fairly sure that she was 180cm by the time the series had ended. By that point she's way above the average height for anyone, man or woman, in almost every country.
Sakaki had a lot of development. She was the silent presumed to be punk girl with no friends. But in the episodes that surrounded her, she learned that she did have friends, incredible friends that love spending time with her. Her insecurities of being too scary to have friends disappeared the moment the girls all laughed together in the clouds. And then her accepting that she can be big and cute at the same time thanks to Chiyo allowing her to simply let go in her home. And of course, there’s Maya! The one cat she can finally pet!
Sad there no Tadano here(yeah I always wish they had love interest but it just comedy 4-Koma no romance and yes I know but i can’t help I want them to have love interests)
Sasaki is adorable. A victim of early growth spurts, many mistake her for a young woman rather than a big kid. She's actually quite childish and just shy, not as mature or cool as most think she is. Notice how Chiyo is her polar opposite. She takes the innitiative, sets the tone in social situations and acts more like Sasakis big sister than the otherway around.
Sakaki is best girl this is where I'd say something like "fight me" or other matters but no one would do that because it is unanimous. Just as the sky is blue, Sakaki is best girl.
I never really paid much attention to it as a kid, but watching these clips now just made me discover a newfound appreciation for the music. It's so cozy and.. innocent-sounding? If that makes sense. Yuru Camp's soundtrack also has a similar vibe, a show I'd highly recommend to those who enjoyed Azumanga
Thanks, and yes I loved the music, Watching this between 2004-2006 I can tell you, This show was a breath of Fresh Air compared to the loud, obnoxious, jingoistic crap that mainstream society was essentially shoving down our throats. Others would try to emulate this and... I don’t think they were always successful at recreating. There was one Azumanga Daioh, but I am happy to see that love for this series has returned.
That bit near the start where she slightly adjusts the towel so the cats can be closer together is just a brilliant, adorable bit of character development. Such a small thing, but genuinely moving.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD GET OUT OF MY HEAD
I know sakaki wants to be cute and all, but it doesn't help that her fashion sense is more on the "cool" side than "cute". Her heart and her mind are in two different places. She reminds me of myself. I am a big guy but I have a real soft spot for cute stuff. But for other people, that's just gay.
I found a loop hole for the problem, just be gay and nobody will think it's weird! It worked for me... And if you are not gay just be yourself, even if it's not always possible, when you have the oportunity, do what you like!
I share your pain, amigo. Raised by a single mom and three sisters. People almost immediately notice I have this.. "understanding", I guess you could call it. I've literally been told that I'm not gay, but in-between kind of. Whatever the fuck that means. I'm not a big guy but people don't expect someone like me with metalhead-length hair and a beard to dig things like Sailor Moon, etc. and cute characters like Sakaki.. but yet here I am. Best piece of advice you can take: just do you. Outside of what brings you joy, nothing else matters. Especially not other's opinion of you. Eventually you'll be able to find a happy medium, and it will be apparent. Do you, my friend. Because no one else can be you quite like you can 👌
I resonate so much with her character too. I'm extremely tall and I hardly can find cute clothes that fit. I've always been tall and I was never really considered "cute". It didn't help that I'm relegated to clothes that fit the length of my arms and legs... which usually means no cute skirts or blouses :( plus I know I'd look absurd to wear ribbons and stuff being 6'1"
6:28 This scene was when I realised I was watching a masterpiece of anime, the cloud setting and the innocent bliss makes it all very sentimental and endearing, and the music compliments the scene very well.
5:35 this whole conversation had me tearing up on the couch man. the last few episodes of sakaki talking so much was such perfect payoff to her character arc. she went from saying little to holding conversations with strangers for the sake of others. sleeping over at chiyo and sharing more about herself honest to god made me wanna cry on the spot. love how subtle the show handled her, it was never on the nose and *just* purely about cats that made her grow out of shyness.
I think that bit where she’s imagining her and her friends laughing and playing together in the clouds is so sweet. She really cherishes the relationship she has with them
In a series of absolutely loveable characters, the very introverted Sakaki is my favourite. The contrast of being tall, beautiful, and badass, while wanting to be small and adorable, makes her complex yet simple to understand.
@Jeremy Grandison it was translated with subs in the early 2000s and one of the first subbed anime some people watched. Subbed anime itself existed for longer but the early 2000s anime was when it got big
When I watched Azumanga Daioh for the very first time about a year ago, Sakaki quickly became my favorite character. Not only is her design so great, but I loved just how much of a sweetheart she was in this show. She's definitely best girl.
@@not_autistic_336 Woah, they played it on your TV, Dubbed in English.?! I literally bought every episode on DVD with my allowance back then (roughly 2004-2006) Didn’t have any TV Channel playing Anime besides Cartoon Network, and Animidnight on Stars Channels, (Action Channel to be specific)
4:56 This smile...I will protect this smile. I will FIGHT YOU for this smile, you will not hurt this smile. For you see, there are some things in life worth protecting, some things worth living for, some things worth dying for. A smile like this can thaw the iciest of hearts, dispel the darkest of evils and win the mightiest of wars. THIS SMILE WILL BE THE THING THAT PULLS US FROM THE DEPTHS OF DESPAIR, AND LEAD US TO THE PATH OF SALVATION. WARS WILL BE FOUGHT, PEOPLE WILL BE SAVED AND CIVILIZATIONS WILL PROSPER BECAUSE OF THIS SMILE. SO FROM THIS DAY FORWARD I SOLEMNLY SWEAR TO SHIELD THIS SMILE FROM ALL HARM THAT MAY COME TO IT, ALL DANGERS IT MAY POSSIBLY FACE AND GIVE MY LIFE FOR IT!
If no other part, the rolling on the floor bit is better with the English audio track just because of the adorable giggling Ms. Auten provided. I want to see Sakaki when she was a child. I have a feeling she's wrong about never having been cute on that count alone. One of my favorite understated moments in the series involves her, when they're at the library. She and Chiyo are in the same aisle, and she reaches for a book on a lower shelf, while Chiyo reaches for a book on an upper shelf. It's like a metaphor for what their desires to be like each other. And another cool moment: in the relay, where there's a boy in another lane taunting Chiyo, and Sakaki removes her ribbon and ties it up a different way. ...Come to think of it, I don't know why she did that, but it's presented coolly.
oh yeah, where that boy was like, "she's not even trying, their class is done for" and then Sakaki pulls her ponytail out and ties it around her head like, "it's on mothafu-"
Seeing Sasaki love cute things was already touching enough, but that scene of them running and laughing in the clouds said something to me. I gave no idea what, but it said something to me, and that had me SHOOK
Can feel a lot with the way she behaves. I'm a guy who often gets compared to Chiba from Detective Conan while I also can be a bunch like Sakaki. Sometimes I can also be a bit silent, not wanting to worry or offend people and at the same time I just feel really happy when I can watch videos of or can meet some adorable pets. ^_^
I read the manga version of this series, and I noticed that because Chiyo managed to skip grades, she's quite short compared to her classmates. This can cause problems for her. Sakaki likes small and cute things and would rather be one, but she's very tall. I wonder what would happen if Chiyo and Sakaki swapped bodies? It would likely abandon any pretense of realism, kind of like Treehouse of Horror on the Simpsons. Like it, I'd expect such an event to be non-canon, but it would be an interesting thought to see if both of them get what they want. Chiyo would be taller in Sakaki's body, and Sakaki would be small and cute in Chiyo's body.
i think there are some problems that i cant say by word but i still try that saki want to be little and cute and she love anything have that like too, but thats not really how she is, her personality just like "chill vibe" and simple person imo, she know to enjoy life by a little and how to do that too that mean she sound like a grow-up, who can think and have the reason for anything they did in the end, that is something wont fix into a child body, it might be creep or weird at somepoint btw, i love her too, so sometime i just go quickly episode over episode just to see her in the anime
I'd like to see Strawberry Marshmallow and Azumanga crossover, only so we can see drunk Nobue run away with Chiyo instead of getting to know people her own age, and see Sakaki deal with Miu.
This girl and Rider from Fate/Stay Night are long lost twins: both are tall and voluptuous women with long hair, soft-spoken with a cool and very feminine demeanor. They share a serious complex about their body and a desire to be more cute, a quality they both attribute to a smaller stature. And the funny thing is they both share the same voice actor, Asakawa Yuu, one of the sexiest voices in the industry.
i wish i had a friendship like them, despite their differences they still stick together, enjoy each others company and share dumb yet cute moments together. i know this is supposed to be a romanticization of a friendship that doesn't exist in real life but idc i still want what they have, not even in elementary school i had a friendship so pure and cute like theirs :'(
People always remember Osaka as the autistic kid from this show, but Sakaki was daydreaming just as much. (Remember this: Chiyo's Father was created in Sakaki's mind, not Osaka's)
