Great video. I think I have been doing some "Sakigiri" already but you make it so clear and obvious why/when you would do it. I really appreciate the wise advice!

Hi! I'm a really new Doman Mahjong player in FFXIV and I still have so much to learn but your videos are really helpful. I have to get my rank above a certain amount for rare in-game achievements, titles and music tracks.

I just recently started playing Mahjong and am still a super beginner but your videos helped me greatly to understand the basic concepts keep up the good work! one thing i'd like to see if you plan on uploading more videos would maybe be a full game with either live commentary or post commentary that would be so much fun to watch and also getting insight on decisions by an experienced player is something i couldn't really find.

Very interesting, good to see you're still making videos! Another topic I almost never see discussed is whether and how to pressure our shimocha. Is this something that is actually done or does it only appear in fiction? Is it feasible, or just better to focus on your own hand and general defence against all players? Would love to hear your thoughts on this one day.

It depends what you mean on "pressure". Specifically in the case of honitsu or chinitsu, cutting them off the ability to call chii on that suit can be very powerful. A lot of it depends on the strength of our own hand, in a similar idea to sakigiri we discussed here- if we are very strong, it often makes sense to prioritize efficiency, but if I am looking at a weak or folding hand, I tend to simply hold all I have of that suit. Is that what you were thinking, or are there other specifics to the pressure you were talking about?

@@Crow77 Basically keeping tiles they can chii, yes. Honitsus and chinitsus are of course the most obvious but I sometimes see talk of pressuring obvious chanta or tanyao hands too. I was wondering if it's ever worth sacrificing your own hand to inhibit only your shimocha. Won't the other two opponents reap the benefits instead? Even if shimocha is 1st, you're not really improving your overall standing by retarding shimocha and letting someone else develop their hand, or am I mistaken? But it's a good rule of thumb you mention there, I think. Might as well take someone down with us if we have a weak or folding hand anyway? P.S. I love the way you add little glossaries in the corners. They're not distracting for people who know the terms but helps listeners who might not be familiar with them.

Tanyao, it makes less sense to do this in general. At least with honitsu, there are enough tiles there that you can still make good shapes out of them, but if you try to cut only terminals, you're almost never going to complete your hand. The opposite is true for chanta- keeping all terminals in your hand just slows you down too much. So at that point, it becomes more of a standard fold/push decision. A lot of that decision is based on the dora- tanyao is more dangerous because of the red 5s. But, if you, for example, have 2 of the red 5s in hand, and the Dora is a terminal, a tanyao isn't very dangerous, and you can push into it more often. An honor Dora is similar for chanta- if the Dora are all getting cut and unusable, a chanta is unlikely to have much value, so you can push a wider range of hands. Re: translation notes, thanks for the feedback! It was something suggested by a newer player in my local club, and I think I'm unlikely to get rid of it any time soon, I'm a big fan too. Cuts down on time explaining translations or topics covered in other videos, and still allows for good flow.
