CORRECTION: At 29:56, the track used for the BGM of the prison area is, in fact, an existing Sakura Wars 1 track, albeit one that isn't used anywhere in the actual game and is only on the soundtrack (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ozk2KpK0Vq0.html ; one of several OST tracks that didn't make it into the final game). However, the actual track is only about 16 seconds long and was not made as a looping background track, nor is it nearly as shrill and ear-piercing as the version playing in GB2. So while it is a very ill-conceived reuse and rather poor conversion, it is nonetheless a Kohei Tanaka cut.
I honestly kinda like the idea that Mattobii is actually canonically there for all of Sakura Wars 2, he’s just such a klutz that he never actually show up on screen.

That part really made me laugh as he would never do that in real life and we probablty doesn't sleep, talk or even have a Kohran Li and probably only put it in as a joke! That just goes to show how much of a klutz he truly is! But that's why we love him! He would make a great comedian! My first thought was, "How could I have missed this?" And then I realized that I never did subscribe to your channel. So that's on me. I only happened to see it because I was going back through your retrospective (at least for the first two games, because I habitually go back and rewatch everything on my "Saturn Worship" playlist), so I'm glad I caught this, even if it's a couple weeks late.
24:46 I just remembered. In one of the free explorations in sakura wars 2, you actually can find maria at the pool actively addressing her issue with swimming. She's still a little nervous but seemingly trying to get over her fear.
My brother and I watched all your videos this past August. He's more of a Sakura Wars fan because of 2019 and Project x Zone 1 & 2. Never played any of the other games, so this series was a great way of learning it all, and for him to go "Oh! That's why that happens in PxZ!!" Your videos are great, and now that we have both caught up: all I can say is "PART 7 MAN, HURRY UP!!!"
A improvement over an already good installment, makes me wish that the GB protagonist would make a comeback and Sakura Wars GB3 on the Gameboy Advance being a real game. With that said, both GB titles deserves love and heck, possibly a fan remake to improve the story to make it feel like a mainline SW game!

May his reign in Sakura Wars land be the best and greatest I've ever seen since King Tim "William Julius Caesar" Rogers I ruled Tokimeki Memorial World and gave it so much glory, prosperity, and best of all, innocence and safe refugee for people alone in the world, people who just someone to talk to or have a personal girlfriend of their own, people going through strggules (both physically and mentally), and unfortunately, neckbeards and perverts (and maybe pedos too) who just want to so some weird and strange things to those innocent girls! I feel Tim Rogers reign would've been better if he set limits for the latter 3 people, but this would gone against the rule of freedom of expression. But despite that, he still put out a great world.

His pronunciations in general are mostly spot-on. I'm really tired of still hearing so many people say it as "sa-KOO-ra". Most people wouldn't even bother with saying 帝国華撃団 at all, let alone make a solid effort at correctly pronouncing words from other languages like German, but our boy マットビィ knows what's up.

I feel the same way Mr. kangaroo boxer. Maybe some former key members of the Sakura Wars series who no longer work at Sega or Red can get to together, make there own development team, and make a spiritual successor, just like Suikoden team(they used to work at Konami and went on to make their own development team, Rabbit and Bear Studios) did with Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes, which has been cited as the spiritual successor to the Suikoden series. Though the likelihood of that happening is low, though we didn't except the key members of the Suikoden to team up either. Also rest in peace Yoshitaka Murayama. You will always be remembered.
Great Video Matt. This is a very interesting spin-off game, it looks like a good time. Sad that there's not really an extra character ending scene before the ending. It would have been interesting to see what they would have written for the girl MC for each ending.

I really want to play this game. I was a bit disappointed when I found out that Sakura Wars GB 1 was not a top down dungeon crawler like this. While I dream this gets a fan translation, I am litterally learning Japanese from the ground up (well for many reasons but a big reason is) mainly for this game. I love weird Gameboy RPG games.
I've been wondering why Sakura Wars never had a game on Game Boy Advance. If they waited just a little bit before starting development, they might have been able to launch on the new platform.
Nintendo had already started sending out GBA dev kits before even GB1 launched, and another Jupiter-developed game launched on GBA the same day as GB2 (one based on the Kinniku Banzuke TV show), so I have to imagine either they didn't have enough resources to support dev on multiple GBA games, Sega/Red mandated it be on GBC for some reason, or the decision to release on GBC was wholly voluntary and self-inflicted.
@@MattoBii I think all of those possibilities are equally likely given what we know right this minute then. My guess is a mix of the last two, in that they wanted to create a sequel but not enough to start work anew on a new platform even when it was clear they should have. Perhaps they relied on the backward compatibility of the Game Boy Advance to cover for the fact that it's a Game Boy Color game, and that NES games were still being produced well after the SNES was released to support that decision. Either way they missed out on the ability to add even more voice samples in a Game Boy Advance ROM.
This one looks pretty neat. A fan translation would certainly be appreciated- though wouldn't place higher on my wish-list than translations for the mainline 2-4.

Feels like Japanese fans of the franchise really get to eat a lot better than we unwashed plebs merely doing our best to learn the language will ever be able to. To go on a bit of a tangent, my daughter loves the music and characters of Sakura Wars. She likes to watch me play the (first) game and watch the OVAs and stuff. When she was in an outside-of-school music program, I showed her teacher a video of the karaoke machine we got the kid for her birthday (you'll never guess what the video featured - 檄！帝国華撃団 was her first request for something to sing with it), and her teacher immediately recognized what it was. I know it had a major impact on people, back in the late Nineties, but this was a woman who was largely not into gaming, so for her to know it right off the bat like that means that basically *everybody* within a certain age range must be at least passingly familiar with it, and as someone who doesn't personally know *anyone* in person who is in any way familiar with Sakura Wars, that's an interesting thing to think about.
I don't know if I'd go so far as to call it "lazy", but it is strange they didn't rerelease 1-5 in the leadup to Shin on PS4, like even as a Japan-only thing.

Indeed! Orihime is one of the most beautiful girls of the series, 3rd place in my opinion! Also, I still can't believe Maria is a female. When I first saw her, I actually though she was a male for a moment due to her handsome and beautiful appearance, but then I later found out she wasn't. Oh, and I love her edgy appearance and cool blooded personality (at least in the beginning of the first game). It makes her look attractive to me for some reason. She is awesome and amazing! And it is great that she got over her weakness. It makes her develop as a character! Maria fans anyone?
