In today's video I end all the debates surrounding Sakusa vs Ushijima and explain who actually is the number 1 Ace in Haikyuu.
Kiryu is out of the question atm but will make a video of him soon and where he fits in.
and always remember the objective is to "SCORE A POINT"

Shiratorizawa doesn’t have a bad roster but their game plan is pretty much “let Ushijima spike as much as possible.” Ushijima doesn’t have a player on his squad who’s necessarily renowned in their position on a National level, but took them to the top 8 anyways. I think overall Ushijima does a better job of carrying his team more than any other Ace

@@kiseryouta9818 you’re right about Tendou but I wouldn’t say they are the only reason. Shiratorizawa is overall a strong team but if we compare rosters a team like Itachiyama has 3 players who could have a case for being the best in their position and we haven’t even seen the rest of the squad

@@MyMainMan90 Very late response, but Sakusa's physical fitness wasn't exactly on par with Ushiwaka's. His stamina in high school was akin to that of Kei Tsukishima's (3/5) so the wear and tear gets to him a lot quicker. In a five set match, I'd reckon I'm taking Ushiwaka for the long haul. Ushiwaka is arguably more consistent due to his power and stamina as well. Sakusa seemed to be a bit overall more deft and reilable, but Sakusa strived to be like Ushiwaka in terms of spiking.

While on the other hand Sakusa was a champion in the Inter-high nationals. Kiryu obviously we don’t know where his team we’re placed. In the pre-time skip he was just to insecure with his abilities as an ace while he is comparable to Ushijima in strength and is stated as an better all rounder it’s just his mentality that held him back. @ChristianMcCaffreyLowinski 3 месяца назад
I think you're wrong about one thing in particular. The notion that both Sakusa and Ushijima are equal in scoring potential is wrong in my opinion. There are a lot of mechanics which go in Wakatoshi's favor that aren't just "strength" and "southpaw" spin. The fact that he uses his left arm and approaches from the right side already gives him a latent advantage because most blockers will instinctively block the right side of his body and not his left, and for them to properly deny his left arm they'd need to fully shift themselves to that point but by doing that they leave a lot of room for him to cut. This is actually why he's always double marked, there's no way of covering his side at all. Now when he's double blocked it's imperative that the blockers need to either be equal in reach, jump at the same time, and of course jump high enough to block the ball at its apex. Off the bat the defense has to practically fill three objectives to even block him, and you could say that's true for all blockers but we've constantly see Ushiwaka actively take advantage of disparities in two-man blocks to target the lower blocker and smack it down on the weaker side. If the blockers aren't in place and there's a gap he can hit it straight through, and we ignore that Ushiwaka is pretty generous to never use quicks. If he ever just wanted to break the game he could request a quick set every time and break records, and if that wasn't enough even IF they got everything right, he could just spike clear over the blocks like we see in 9:37. Sakusa's biggest strength is block outs, gaps, crosses and straights. All spikers worthy of the top 5 can do that, its the fact that Ushijima can just ignore defenses and spike over and around if he wants that makes him all that imposing. Sakusa uses his skill because that's the only way he can score, Ushijima uses his pure strength because it's the simplest way but when we see later on in the game, he begins to make use of more skillful tactics. Ushijima is narratively written as the better one of the three as well, you can see this through all members actively looking "up" to Ushijima rather than viewing them as equals. Sakusa often questions how Kageyama beat Ushijima and doesn't believe something like that is doable for a reason, and that's because he's narratively the better of the trio. He also canonically beats Kiryuu and Motoya in Junior High, so that's that.

Y’know I had a pretty good team last year. We had a 6’4 southpaw who had mad hops. A prodigy with powerful jump serves. A 6’0 middle who blocked almost every ball, and, most importantly, and incredible dashing Libero who never let the ball touch the ground. The sad part was the rest of the team couldn’t really spike or anything so we got predictable. We were like shiratorizawa and Dateko mixed into one. Of course most of the sets went to our Ushijima. But the setter wasn’t consistent so our Southpaw never got a run up in and still averaged 15-20 points a game. It was really a one man show. I always brag to my friends that I’m in Shiratorizawa but looking at the Haikyu team. One man can’t carry a team. 28-29 to the other team. Setter sets to Ushijima. I yell “SMASH IT” blocked. They got used to him. No one followed up because he tended to spike Over the block. Low set low spike. Lost game. I forgot to mention out Ushijima is 14. Like what the hell. Our oldest player was 15. And he was 5’5.

@seanpule266
@seanpule266 Год назад
Sakusa is the ultimate all-around player and genuinely the only player in Japan with "no real weaknesses," given he's the only one without a stat below 8/10. Even Hinata and Hoshiumi, with composite scores of 53/60 just like Sakusa who has 53/60, possess a 7/10 each in blocking, making it their clear weakest aspect. Ushiwaka plays solid on defense but it is obvious that offense is his forte. He's also not relied on in the backrow for defense because of his ability to put the ball away being more exemplified without having to play defense. Sakusa doesn't come close in terms of raw athleticism. Ushijima is equally quick on the court, jumps higher, hits harder, has more stamina. In terms of technique, it's not "Ushijima doesn't come close." Ushijima's spiking techniques are far more advanced than Sakusa's, and his passing form is virtually flawlessed. If anything, Sakusa is just more 'skilled,' not 'more technically proficient.' It's a hard choice, though, because what you want from either player just depends on the team you want to run or whatever is missing from your team. Both of them are volleyball geniuses and monsters.

To anyone saying "but ushijimas power is better" power can be countered by a good defense, such as nishinoya, and sakusa both receiving his straights, but sakusa's spin would be a lot harder to counter. Sakusa can (most likely) use the flexibility of his wrists to spin the ball multiple different ways to where it would be much more difficult to actually receive or block his hits.

Well if you get used to Sakusa's spike it can also be counter by a good defense, just like in the match against Ushijima, Nishinoya weren't able to receive Ushijima's attack at first because he's left handed which has a unique spin to the ball just like Sakusa's flexible wrist, the spin might not be as nasty as Sakusa's but Ushijima's power makes his left hand spin on par with Sakusa's nasty spin imo, they basically have similar yet different weapon

Im going to disagree. The manga states that sakusa's SPIN is more difficult to handle than ushijama's, not his spikes overall. Nasty spin is effective against receives, not so much against blocks. Playing against blocks requires power, spike height, knowing angles to wipe and executing the spikes accurately, being able to read the blocks, and having counter measures when you get countered (ushijima, bokuto, hoshiumi and post skip hinata showed the most ability in most of these departments). The ace main role is to spike through blocks when the recieve is off, and sakusa is not particularly suited for that. He is the most effective when paired with with players that can open up the block for him, such as hinata or bokuto so he can exert his full potential botching recieves with his spin. And That's why he is playing WS as a pro and not opposite.

The reason the outside hitter gets the set when the offense is out of system because typically, the outside hitter will be able to keep the ball in play. whereas shiratorizawa, ushijima was the most reliable because he was the strongest hitter in his team. Also, to be a pro you have to have immense power, and yes ushijima is stronger but that doesn’t mean sakusa is purely wrist flick. he too has insane power as demonstrated by his jumpserve. he is more reliable on defense and actually has to participate in defense, if he or ushijima has to set the ball i guarantee you you would want sakusa to set you instead of ushijima. also in terms of going against blockers he has the advantage. Lefties are strong because the spin on the ball is different for the recievers. Ushijima is strong due to this AND because he knows how to see the block. Sakusa has the advantage because he sees the block just as well, and actually is more deceptive because you can’t really tell which angle he will hit, and can easily hit strong with right spin and make the ball hit off the blocker into the antenna for a point. ushijima is strong, but id say sakusa is the better ace.

I disagree, we know that even ushijima can put a lot of spin with Just sheer force. We know that in middle school he was able to surpass sakusa spin by sheer force(sakusa was amazed that someone could put more spin than him on a ball). He jumps higher, hit stronger, Is a Better blocker. Itachyama was considered the best team at the Nationals but without the setter they Lost to a team tha Lost the next game. Ushijima Is single handedly able to change the course of a game. From what we have seen of 3 of the other four top 5 spikers, no One of them Is able to polarize the game as ushijima can. We also know that ushijima Is a Monster even in the tecnical field. He changed the course of the Spike mid air in the game(nishinoya was impressed and didn't even know It was possible), so i dont see why should he be considered less skilled. And dont forget that he Is lefty. The blockers have to adapt to his form, also the spin Is different, noya that Is One of the best libero in the nation needed 1 set Just to be used to the spin. We should also consider the fact of having a player Like ushijima in the team, the fact of being lefty makes him play Like a Wing spiker in the opposite position, having the possibility of playing with two cannons instead of One and a good defensive player. Last but not the least stats are shit. Mika(suguru girlfriend) has 4/5 in game sense, the Same of Oikawa. Also She has 3/5 in Power while Hinata has 1/5.

Ok so this is what my finals pov on this is: Ushijima seems like he'd be he type of person to look scary and is scary? He's a total powerhouse and even though his family didn't really want him being left handed his dad still made the effort for him and now look he's a literal monster. I get confused how Karasuno wins alot if matches and sometimes I wish they didn't win. But yeah I feel like he has the overall power and stuff if u understand what I'm saying and then yeah he has a strong team and then we have basically Sakusa his team does get the upper hand of having a 180cm Libero because if longer body parts and as nishinoya said he would still be a Libero no matter how tall he is. And didn't kuroo say that Itachiyama is one of the favourites to win nationals so they are obviously a strong team along with shiratorizawa but ofc sakusa does get that upper hand with the spikes from that nasty spin on his spikes even seagull head said they are hard to receive I believe but yeah basically it's like a tank Vs a a person with knowledge kinda idk but the power winner is ushijima and the technique and skill goes to Sakusa I wouldn't be surprised if they were both in like first and second

Great analogy to the NBA but i'll compare it a little more detailed: Ushijima is more like Michael jordan or Kobe Bryant (RIP forever), while MJ and KB don't rely on power they were always known for scoring and that's what Ushijima does best, scoring. Sakusa is more like Lebron minus the brute strength, like Sakusa, Lebron is an all-around good player. Lebron is good at scoring, good at rebounding the ball, good at distributing the ball, good at defense, etc. So in conclusion, Ushijima is like an even more powerful MJ and Sakusa is a less powerful Lebron.

but hinata could receive one of his spikes almost at the end ofthe match, but in the previous occasions he could not stop it, the same with sakusa who is excellent receiving the ball even though he was in the right place he could not stop it, the defense of the jackals looked superior to the adlers and still ushijima got a lot of points

@@sandygarcia3567 I mean yeah but to be honest if it was Sakusa on the other side it would be a whole different story even kageyama a whole volleyball genius couldn't get sakusas spike up and Hinta is a very well rounded passer and it took him time to Adjust to Ushijima but hes encountered Ushijima before so It wouldn't be completely different but imagine if Hinata had to go up against a completely new and different spike it would probably take him a very long time to get it down In the match. It's not about who has more power it's about who is harder to stop. Ushijima got his spikes digged while sakusa on the other hand didnt. But I still love them both
@sandygarcia3567
@sandygarcia3567 3 года назад
@@chumbucketssquarepants8201 It took hinata a lot of tries to stop ushijima once, maybe at first it seems an advantage that your attack is more tricky, but after a player gets used to those attacks you are lost. In the case of ushijima that does not happen, because it is pure strength even if you know "the trick" due to the strength he has, he will score in most attempts as it happened to sakuza that even being in the correct position to receive ushijima's attack, he could not stop it.
@PracticalProblems

I guess an Ace is the player that can score reliably, and if Ushijima and Sakusa were to both go and attempt to score all the points, Ushijima would be able to continue, because Ushijima seems to have more Stamina, and, like how you said, Sakusa would have less. In terms of a point getter, if both were to play in the same position, both would get the job done, so Id say they would be equal. But for qualifying as an ace, Ushijima would fit.

I am a volleyball player and in my opinion Sakusa's serves would be much harder to receive than Ushijima's because of the spin. I say this because with Ushijima's serves as long as I'm in the right spot I can get the ball up at least, obviously hoping my form doesn't break because of his power, but that isn't too much to worry about. On the other hand, Sakusa's serves, even if i'm in the right spot it'll be extremely difficult to get the ball to go up because the spin will most likely cause it to go off the side of my arm. Both Ushijimia and Sakusa are amazing players though and I don't think I could receive eithers serve!!

The top 3 and Aran - Bokuto are never ranked, it's just stated that Ushijima, Kiryu and Sakusa are top 3 while Bokuto and Aran are the next, and that Bokuto and Aran can occasionally rival the top 3. Kiryu is a bit more skilled than Ushijima and has better jump, but Ushijima is the king of stamina, is left-handed and doesn't have Kiryu's emo mode. Both Sakusa and Kiryu respect Ushijima, though it doesn't necessarily mean that they're worse.

on top of what you said, maybe you said it, but I wanted to point out, like we saw in the national retire with kageyama, how smart sakusa is: like you said, he hasnt got so much power like ushijima but he observes very well his opponent and the disposition of the player in the court to attack right where the opponent is open like when he did that spike at the end of court which was practically impossible to receive. So overall, apart from the things you said, with which I completely agree, sakusa's strenght lies also in his game sense, his intelligence and capability of observing the opponent

Not fully disagree but you have to check the other outside too because there are two of them and just one opposite so if you combine the two outsides attempts you'll see they're less then twice the opposite's, this is due to situations, preference of the setter, but most of the time hardest balls are set to the opposite cus that's just his job to hit. You can't compare this players on their positions, you have to put them in the same and then see who does better, but this will probably end up in one winning at certain position and loosing in another. Better way is checking the different elements of the sport and seeing how the players excel in them. This missunderstanding is from not being deeply into the sport like being a player or coach but I appreciate your enthusiasm. Keep it up!

I disagree about the stamina fs - while ofc all pros have tons of stamina just from what we've seen Ushijima can play a whole game while being at the top of his game or at least close to it throughout and we just haven't seen anything which gives that level of stamina to Sakusa I also disagree about serving I don't think it's as clear cut as how you made it and I think it's very easy to call them equal here - Ushijima's serves have shown to ofc be at the pinnacle of power and he can easily hit ace after ace without receivers even touching the ball - this is similar to their spiking and if you believe that Sakusa's technique makes his spiking equal to Ushijima's which is fair then you have to agree that Ushijima's power and placement behind his serves is 100% equal to Sakusa's spin on his serves I think with his stamina and ability to score just as good if NOT BETTER than Sakusa throughout the game Ushijima would 100% score more points and even though Sakusa's position does get more sets we have repeatedly seen that this does not affect Ushijima's scoring AT ALL - a perfect example is the MSBY vs Adlers game where Ushijima might get less chances than Romero and Hoshiumi BUT still has more points than both Hoshiumi and Romero - both at the elite level with Romero being called a world class ace but still scoring less with more opportunities + this is with Ushijima having to against Hinata who is his counter in the match and the only one who can slow him down albeit barely Overall I think he can attribute to a team better especially when it's built around him as the ace I just can't see him performing any worse than Sakusa and can definitely see him performing better - Sakusa might fit better in a random team but even that is very debateable and any team where Ushijima is the ace he would perform better than Sakusa

imo that ushijima's southpaw and strength will not be as effective the higher level you go. In highschool he stomps, but you would need more than that at an international level to be more relevant. even the southpaw wouldnt be as much of an advantage, even though it still is, just because players at an international level will know how to play against you so it's not an insta win. it's like in league where darius is considered broken in low elo but utter garbage in high elo and pro play. Also sakusa actually is confirmed to have won nationals. Not saying that ushijima hasn't won it but i don't think there was anything in the manga that stated that he has.

Hitting: Sakusa definitely is going to get more sets, although that doesn't support the fact that he is better at hitting. I think this was very well made. But for "who is the better spiker" they are so equal so its all down to preference imo. Some people like heavy hitters and see it the best option whereas some see tackling the block and placing like Sakusa as safer as technique beats all. As for everything else, Sakusa beats ushi I agree

I’d rather receive sakusa spike weather or not I can bump it, sakusas spike won’t hurt, ushijimas will

As a college volleyball player, I believe that Ushijima is the better ace both before the time skip and after. They are on the Japan national team. So they would be playing teams like USA, Brazil, Italy... These teams have terrible defense when it comes to trying to defend brute force. But Liberos like Shoji practice against serves that are more like Sasuka’s where its not too powerful but lots of spin. On a word stage Ushijima is japan’s beast shot

Both basically cancel each other out in their respective styles.

There are definitely spoilers and I believe I didn't put a spoiler warning for everything. Safe to just finish the manga first and then watch the video
