Shoutout to Osamu buying the rice for his Onigiri from Kita‘s farm, too. Guy never stopped being a pillar for his former underclassman.

I really admire Osamu’s character, because he defies the sunk cost effect, he doesn’t go on to play volleyball professionally, which I believe he could have done quite successfully. He doesn’t continue this endeavour just because he’s good at it, rather he pursues something he truly loves and it happens to be cooking! I have always struggled with starting something new, unfamiliar to me, even if I was really interested in it, because I feared not being naturally good at it and it was so much easier to continue doing stuff that I knew I was great at but not enjoyed much. So Osamu to me is a very inspirational character, someone who wasn’t afraid to leave and was able to succeed in something he was genuinely interested in

it is something I kinda relate to as well? And I wish I had seen his character progression at the time it was relevant for my life too. I ended up dropping my sport which I could've pursued despite not having a reason to do so, other than not wanting to continue. I had the skill and tenacity to continue, but ultimately I burned out and didn't wish to anymore. It was quite a bloody fight with my family to do so as well. Had I had Osamu's story in my life at that point maybe that would've made it easier for my mind. But at the same time Atsumu's childlike wonder and glee towards his sport of choice is also something I relate to. As I have found that glee elsewhere since.

it's also thematically beautiful how Atsumu's volleyball hunger is literally fed by Osamu's and Kita's rice, to build that MUSCLE

It must be said that the most important detail in the series is how Osamu was naturally more talented than Atsumu, which subverts expectations, and shows how it is the love of volleyball (that “hunger”) which creates a genius/monster. It is not something you’re just born with.

Osamu, Nishinoya and Hirugami are the three volleyball monsters that ended up choosing another path. Osamu's realization was thanks to Hinata. Hirugami's was thanks to Hoshiumi. Nishinoya had enough clarity to realize it by himself.

Kita was right about the Miya twins, they have the same DNA after all. Atsumu is crazy that he gives everything to volleyball and his career path is set in stone when he is just a kid, but Osamu is also crazy that he gives volleyball up when he can have a career in it, and instead start over in a completely different field. "We don't need the memories" is in their DNA, and in my headcanon, they grow up to be this brave because they know they will always have each other's back, so there is nothing to fear. When you don't play on the same team anymore, you become former teammates. But Atsumu and Osamu will always be brothers, they will always be on the same team in life. It's a shame that there was a time skip and we were never shown how Osamu played during his final highschool year.

The "Haikyuu is poetry" bit in the end, amen :"D Osamu's story is beautiful and is a huge inspiration to me, because even now, after like 5 years of me going into science, I still hear things along the lines of "why didn't you choose translating" and "it doesn't seem like you even love science", even though the latter in particular is baseless. Most people thought I'd choose translating simply because I'm relatively good with languages, and while I still sometimes can't help but question whether or not I have it in me to go into research, I know that it's something I want to do, and Osamu's story is one of the things that really motivates me to keep pushing in that direction.

Everything you talked about captures why Furudate is such an incredible writer imo. There are a hundred chapters between Osamu's realization and his timeskip occupation reveal, and yet that latter made a moment that was already so meaningful in the context of the Inarizaki match, even more meaningful for Osamu's individual arc. It speaks volumes about the care and attention Furudate puts in their character writing, and your analysis only makes me appreciate this gem of a story even more than I already do. You know, each time I look at young people involves in sports be it volleyball, badminton, football, rugby etc, I can't help wonder how many of them would end up being professional. Many would end up doing something else. Some probably within the same world, only probably more into sport science like one of my friend who used to be our school cricket player. Others would end up doing something total opposite of the sports they played back in school or unis. Haikyuu! put that discussion up in a more creative, visual way. Who would've thought Tsukishima who were less enthusiastic in high school actually play in second division. Or Nishinoya who was a hard core libero ended up travelling the world engaging into stuff that is totally different from his stint back in high school. And not forgetting Asahi and Lev, both who had the right built and height for professional volleyball players, ended up in fashion industry.

Osamu is a great character but let's not pretend in the comment section that he's as good as Atsumu. He isn't as rich and fleshed out.

@@Noininioninooknioni Why? Both are fantastic but I think this is a fair take. To me Atsumu is a better character, albeit slightly.

@@kollmack869 Yeah, that's why, atsumu is slightly better mainly because he gets more screentime, and i do think that, but the way he said "He isn't as rich and fleshed out" feels kind of disrespectful to the deepness of the character and how good and developed it actually is.
