Some of my fondest memories as a child growing up in Ukraine are of travelling to Crimea in the summers. This song is in Crimean Tatar - a Turkic language. The Crimean Tatars are the indigenous people of Crimea, who have seen a lot of hardship, including being fully displaced from their homeland by the Soviet government in the 1940s. Although some have returned to their motherland, they face repressions once again, and their language is considered to be endangered and under serious threat of extinction today.
