Roge knows so much about skateboarding history that he's starting to correct pros on their own stories. I didn't know who the fuck Roge was when this show started, but now I can't imagine it without him!
"Swamp Rat Super Good" now we talking nine club . Skated elwood factory mini ramp back in 97 with couple other traveling south africans when living in LV . Mike chu , kenny anderson and rick jaramillo took us there and the planet earth house where ceasar singh and all PE rippers stayed . Was too good and the man is humble !
Great episode. He became an instant idol right after Hokus Pokus. Was really cool to hear him specify his skate footage between H-Street and Plan B that never got used where he focused on skating cleaner and faster. When I saw that Solana Beach footage with the "hand flip":), fs bigspin and that 360 flip was so smooth.
I had Sal's first board and saw Dune, Felix, Vallely, and Templeton at a demo in Tennessee in 1990 while riding that board! I definitely was digging the whole H-Street vibe. Watched Hocus 2-3 times a day for about a year.
One of the best episodes of the whole series, I love the ones with the guys from the late 80s/early 90s era. I'd forgotten that Sal was on Plan B, I mainly remembered him from H-Street and being featured on SK8TV, but he was always really good. What a cool human being.
@@destrybroderick9736 i had the navy blue ones when they came out, and i can remember the stiching went in the front after an afternoons skake. i was annoyed as they looked so nice new... damn i'd forgot about shoe goo.
best episode so far. that man can talk it up. first pair of real skate shoes I purchased were some black sals. Admittedly, I didn't know much about the guy behind the shoe at the time. The shoes were just clean, and I had just finished watching Mouse and Welcome to hell. Seemingly polar opposites like Jaime and Koston both rocked those kicks. Seemed like a no brainer to acquire a pair. Anyway, thank you Chris, Roger, Kelly, and sal for another excellent episode. These conversations y'all have that you share every Monday keep this early thirties wheely boarder feeling hyped about being involved with skate culture for the better half of his life. Much obliged.
I love this. I have watched many videos on the 9 club. I found a pair of Sal 23’s about 15 years ago. I been into skating since the late 80s. I had 2 dudes call me out on wearing fake jordans. I was like these are Sal Barbier shoes. Hes a black skater & kills it. One of them got really upset. I laughed at them & told them that if they wanted to go, at least one of was us was dying & at least one of us was going to prison. They left me alone. Thanks Sal
Interesting interview. Sal has always been this mysterious pro skater to me. I started skating back in 97 and his shoes were super popular but I had never saw any skating from him except a 23 ad in a skate mag. Never saw the old videos from before 97 up until the past few years on youtube so I never saw his video parts. Sal is kinda all over the place when he's explaining things here but he'll randomly say some pretty funny stuff throughout the whole interview. Funny guy. I LOLed at the end when he was talking about construction workers who listen to rock-rap that say stuff to him. Haha funny stuff.
Here's a clip of Fissel in 88' riding for HStreet, doing a lot of the tricks / style Sal is talking about! Chris Fissel is a rad guy and back into helping out underprivileged kids get skateboards!
Man this is so legit. I grew up near Galveston, TX in a small town about an hour from Houston. Around the 7:00 mark when he talks about the first board, the water logged one. Man...all the feels. My first board was an ever slick Santa Cruz back in like '92-'93. I found the board on the side of the road. It had small roller blade wheels on it and the hardware was rounded on the top like straight from Home Depot. Roots, man! You always have been and always will be so legit, Sal! Love this episode, guys. #switchflipswitchmanny
Swamp rat….super good:) I’m from Louisiana too. He came to Lafayette Louisiana in the early 90s. I think he’s from Baton Rouge. Been there many times. 22:20 shout out to surf & skate laffayette…sadly it’s a tire shop now:(
hello crobert and rbag. gotta catch up on some episodes. just wanted to say your show is like a wet dream for all the older skaters. thanks for doing that. like mentally pleasing me you know. i´m sorry
Shackle Me Not looked like the videos we made around the neighbourhood, with superior skating,as opposed to the fucking Powell videos. Made them relatable
the nine club fucking rocks!!!!!! its pretty fucking sic to wake up @ 5 am and have this be the first thing u see!!!!....it reallys makes my day......thank you guys so much....i fucking loved every show so far almost......Chris, Rog and even Kelly.....lol....keep up the good work.....the fucking culture needs this shit, Man.....word the fuck up for real
Michael Sheridan Yes!! I read in an article he was almost homeless at one time.. Like converse were using his shoes to profit but then weren't paying him.
Exactly what I came to say, Anthony isn't the same guy he was. He scammed a lot of collectors on shoes/skateboard deals, by never sending the product or sending one that was far worse condition than what was shown in the post. Leave that junkie mfker on the east coast where he belongs.
He didnt like his part in questionable.... i thought Sal was rad when that came out. He always was already a legend when that dropped. Him and Hensley were my favourites in Hocus Pocus!!
grew up watching Sal tear up Downtown Baton Rouge around the centroplex. the shit he could do off those stairs defied physics. i am a few years younger than Sal and was an average crap skater at best so I only spoke to him a couple times by chance meetings and he wouldn't remember me from Adam, but he was always cool and never acted like he didn't have time to talk to us common dweebs. easily became my favorite skater once he went pro.
I grew up loving eS back in the golden era. I currently have four pairs of eS, including the reissued Accels and SAL 23s. I love the slim versions (although the insoles could be a little more comfy on the heels) otherwise great looking shoes and they feel great to skate in...that's not including the other pairs of eS I have. I had too many of their shoes back in the day to even remember. So glad they're back. I just hope they're able to start getting their shoes back into skate shops across the country. These days all that shops sell are Nike and Adidas. smh A skate shop selling that shit in the golden era of skating would've went out of business!
Wow hocus pokus (1989) (H street). Not sure how many times I've ran that vcr over and over and there you get Sal starting off with the gnarliest land tricks. 👍#thuglife respect... vet here😁
Dude. This episode is the best. Sal is the best... so funny. What a legend. I like his take on skateboarding and had no idea he was really like this back in early 90’s Plan B days. I knew he was kinda outspoken and funny, but not this level. “Attack of the Nineties assholes.” 😂 He ain’t lying. Skate culture was kinda fucked back then, with tons of vibing. It was also magical and amazing, but it got pretty ugly 92-94.
List of people I'd like to see on the nine club. 1. Ricky Oyola (I know I'm dreaming here) 2. Jim Greco 3. Clyde Singleton 4. Jerry Hsu 5. Kenny Reed 6. John Cardiel 7. Quim Cardona 8. Nate Jones 9. Jason Dill 10. Mark Suciu
Darius Blue the guy is a legend everybody knows. it was just me i wasn't expeting a great talk. i mean, even if i see rodney mullen (wich i idolize) on the nine club i'd be like: man, this is gonna be long...
antonio Da .... Mullen's ass I hear that, but, SLB..... IDK I always sweated this dude since the h street days to Elwood.. I remember almost every aspect of his pro career almost just as he says, so it's kinda rad
I have the original 411 vhs woth Sal walking along the coast woth the shoe 23 tied around his neck. San Jose retrospective 1990s talking about the new shoe & labor day skate comp canceled + skate comp results.. (THE Results)
Man, I remember meeting Sal at the sponsored AM contests in Houston and Austin in the late 80's. I'm black also but I'm the darker black dude and I know what he's talking about.
