My dude, don't let anyone tell you that the color of your skin alone determines your chances. You may even have some opportunities that a female, or a non black person may not. schools like diversity... being male helps in nursing, being a black male may help even more in certain areas where few black men apply to programs. Beyond all that. You may find more success with populations that might not view a person of a different ethnicity can fully understand their experience in this world. Go get em brother, look at how your differences can play to your favor, not how they will hold you back.

I'm looking at this video as a Psych RN in 2022 and I'm wondering if you can update this video. Due to the crisis and RN shortage. Travel nurses are grossing double to triple the numbers you stated. I know their speaking of capping pay as I speak but no legislation has been presented as of yet and travel nurses aren't having it. I was supposed to start school in March but I think I'm going to postpone to see where the climate is headed. I see alot of NPs going back to travel as well. So right now I don't know if it's worth it for me. Maybe in a couple years.

Both are difficult but I'm pretty sure CRNA school is wayyy more difficult due to clinicals and material needing to be known

What are the pros and cons of working as an NP in a restricted practice state such as CA? Do you not wish to practice in a full or reduced role state?

Thank you, this was very informative. I don’t know if you addressed this in a previous video but how you feel about new grad RNs going straight into NP school? I’m going into my junior year of nursing school right now and that’s the route I’m planning on taking (specialty in psych). Thanks again ! 🙂

Thank you for the support. I always recommend getting experience as RNs. It's not mandatory but you always want to make sure you enjoy what you do before you specializing and sacrificing so much time, effort and money. Good luck!

Also pay attention guys to location. Does 172k sound like a lot of money? How about after we adjust for state taxes, 1099, social security, federal? You're looking at about 113k after taxes in California. 130k in Florida. (If paid 172k) And states understand this. So you won't get paid 172k in Florida. You'll get paid, max around 150k But the salaries level out.

Yup, location is everything. It doesn't sound a lot, unless you go 1099, get an S Corp, write all of your expenses off, put a bunch of money into your 401k or invest, then write off expenses of investments then youre chillin 😎

It really depends on many factors. I make more that most NPs as a float pool RN in FL. But I know NPs that work tele and other gigs and they make more than most doctors.

Dude, are the starting salaries still that low? 150, 165, 175k offers are what I'm hearing from colleagues. Where are these 100k salaries?!

Thanks for the post. Just for other viewers, there are telemetry float pool RN making the same money with a BSN - $90/hr in California. Plus Cali is time and half after 8hrs. Do what you enjoy. Not just what pays the most, imho. Good luck to everyone!

$90..That's in California. Same as making $30 an hour in Michigan. In Cali my cousin makes $22 as a cashier at JCPenny. 🤷‍♀️

@@joemomma707 this is why he chose psych np. Highway is no longer his choice. I rather have less stress than die early. I would still keep my RN license to do vaccination clinics on the side.

I don't think anybody should be going for APN just for the money.. as a travel nurse you can make the same especially with covid pays..

Does a psych np have to be a DNP now or can it still be an MSN?

You def don't have to get your DNP, MSN is the minimum requirement

Salaries will be coming down in the coming years. Nurses are running and I mean running to get those advanced degrees. Schools are packed!

Yup, I agree for majority of people just wanting hourly or salary, but I don't think it will if you have ur own practice

My Psych NP pay sucks. There are a boat loads of new PMHNPs out there now and employers have no problems hiring. Have a hard time getting $110k in a high cost of living area. It's depressing. If you're making $100/hr 1099 in California, that would be close to $75-80/hr after factoring in self-employment taxes and benefits. That is not good pay in such an expensive state.

I totally disagree with you!! Post Covid you will be making $25-$35 an hour at Tops! Compare that to starting salaries over 100,000 Dollars a year. I do not know any bedside nurses making that kind of cash!! As a dual certified nurse practitioner in family practice and in psychiatry. if you are just into nursing for the money, you are in the wrong profession!

I’m In cali. I don’t know a single nurse making less than 100k here. I make 180k with OT as a psych nurse here. My base pay is 126k/year without a single minute of OT. I just have an AA in nursing. And OT is easy since some days, you aren’t even hired as a nurse but still get RN OT pay.
