As you came out of the avenue onto manor avenue, if you look at the houses opposite, on the left you have a number of semi detached houses, 3 larger detached houses, and then the bungalows. My mum and dads house was the 1st semi on the far left. We had a fully grown horse chestnut tree in our back garden, plus if you dug down about a foot in the back garden there were the cobbles from the courtyard of the original house. The detached houses still have part of the wall which may have been from the kitchen garden of the house, at the end of their gardens. If you go to the other end of the avenue the end house on the left (as you face washway road) is the original gatehouse/lodge at the entrance to the avenue leading to the house. Its just been renovated
I'm not sure from your description about your own residence but I'm very aware of what you call the gatehouse at the top of the Avenue. I asked Mrs. Manchester some years ago (before she moved out) if she knew that her house was the gatehouse to Oakleigh. She said it wasn't. However, I'm not too sure if she knew the history. Bob Grainge bought that house and did it up by buying a new spire for it and has extended it at the back. Unfortunately, he died just before it was complete. His brother had the family name put on the lamp post in the garden in rememberence of Bob, lovely touch I think. Still not sold yet. I will be meeting up with Michael Riley, local historian in the next 2 weeks
Hi Richard this was very fascinating. Thanks for doing it. I never knew but always wondered what the story of the stepping stones was. Keep them coming.
Great video, I'd love for you to do an investigation in my village of Sandiway/Cuddington and the round tower. I understand it used to be a toll gate and there was a manor house, but I struggle to visualise the historic layout.
I remember from my childhood an old sandstone house somewhere along there which I think was called The Haddon Hotel. I would like to think that was the old hall but I suspect the hall had gone by then.
Hi I would love a more in depth history of some of the old buildings and farm buildings particularly along firs way and manor avenue . And bit more of the evolution of that area. For example moss cottage near haydock avenue and the buildings and cottages at the top of Woodhouse lane. The history is there like you say! I would love to know more about it
@@oddities-whatnot it was mostly all fields, overspill came along and Partington changed forever, now it's almost a city with all the huge housing developments, I am more interested in the WW2 aircraft battery that I have read was placed in Cross lane Park but no evidence of this can be seen
Can you do a video on the 3 houses that used to be on The Avenue please, only one still standing Oakleigh, which I live in. I can help with some info, just pm me
