9:37 Salem Center is actually still open, but they did recently lose JCPenney, turned the old Nordstrom into Rivenwood Apartments, and lost Buckle and Foot Locker to Keizer Station and Lancaster Mall respectively. Hopefully the new ownership can turn the place around. Last i'd heard the old JCPenney was being turned into another section for the mall, with (i assume) Macy's and Kohl's being the primary anchors while they're still here.

7:07 As of writing this comment (11:34 AM PST on 10/5/24), In the event your travel time is tripled, Public transit ends up being faster (at least if you use the last possible 1X trip between Wilsonville and Salem, where MAX Blue Line leaves Pioneer Square at 5:16 PM (Getting you to Beaverton at 5:37 before WES leaves for Wilsonville at 5:50), and then 1X arrives at the Downtown Transit Center in Salem at 7:22 PM (Leaving Wilsonville at 6:37, after WES has arrived at 6:17). In the case of driving, and having to take triple the time to complete your trip due to traffic, you'd have to leave Downtown Portland around 5:07 PM. It may only be 7 minutes difference, but sometimes a longer trip where you're always moving (expect of course when waiting for transfers) will be more bearable than being stopped in your car for god only knows how long because traffic is slow AF (especially since in that case you can't distract yourself from the annoyance of it by playing on your phone or something like you can when waiting for your next bus/train at the Beaverton and Wilsonville Transit Centers in the above trip.

Amtrack would be an option if you wanted to take a train. Have yet to meet anyone who finds that option as their go to commute route.

It’s ok for leisure travel - but not geared for time sensitive commuter travel in Oregon currently. Seattle metro area for instance has “The Sounder” commuter train runs daily between Tacoma, etc. and Seattle. Mass transit commuters between city’s in Oregon likely use more frequent & reliable bus services. (See may reply on query below for more re: these Amtrak services).

isn't there a train that goes from Salem to Portland?

You’ll want to check the Amtrak schedule for the train originating in Eugene for Northbound travel, & the train originating in Portland for Southbound travel! I’ve been stuck waiting, & waiting for hours on end for the train out of LA especially, or from Vancouver BC etc. (due to all the rail hiccups over longer distances.) The PNW, perhaps the entire West coast has more limited runs than the East coast for instance.
