Sallen-Key Filter Design Tutorial: LPF, HPF Frequency Response, Damping Factor

An overview of How to Design Sallen-Key Analog Filter is presented in this Tutorial and Walkthrough circuit design video for both Low-Pass Filter and High-Pass Filter Implementations. The general Sallen Key Topology is discussed and then Transfer Function is computed using a combination of op amp virtual short, Kirchhoff Circuit laws KCL (law of conservation of current) and KVL (voltage division) and unity gain buffer (non-inverting amplifier). The Transfer function of LPF and HPF filters are compared and then using MATLAB Freqs, pzmap and step functions, Sallen-Key Filter frequency response, phase response, pole-zero map plot, time domain step response, Natural frequency and Damping factor zeta are evaluated, compared and analyzed to examine underdamped, critically-damped and overdamped design cases.

Very useful channel for an engineer! Many thanks! Would it make the derivation easier using star-delta formula for R1, R2, C1? BTW do you know a analog circuit, that behaves like a precision voltage controlled z-diode (0...15V)? Fast and stable would be nice.

For this relatively small op amp circuit, given the already quick KCL calculation utilizing Op Amp virtual short, Star-Delta transformation is probably not beneficial. But it might help in a larger circuit. Regarding your voltage controlled Zenner Diode question: effectively you are asking for an adjustable voltage regulator. In this Sallen-Key Design Tutorial video, parameters M and N are real positive numbers that the designer can choose depending on what Damping Factor and Frequency Response (for example cutoff frequency) are desired. The impact of M and N on Filter characteristics are discussed in the second half of this video that shows time-domain step response and Sallen-Key Frequency response as we change M and N.
