While fishing with ‪@murphysportfishing‬ in Kyuquot last summer, we targeted chinook salmon by using live squid again. Once the tide changed and bites came on, it became rather chaotic.

Right up there on my fishing wish list is salmon fishing for chinooks in the straits between Vancouver Island and the mainland. You guys sure are lucky!

How are you enjoying Vancouver so far Carol? By the way they just stocked Rice Lake in North Vancouver yesterday so if you are looking for a nature walk and some trout fishing, that's a good place to visit this week. 😊 A bunch of other lakes were also stocked - Lafarge, Como, Buntzen, all worth a visit. 😊

@@FishingwithRod Thanks for the hints. We’re limited to public transport presently so we might consider Lafarge and Bunzten.... we’re house-sitting In Coquitlam ....so have only bikes and our feet.......caught a trout from Lake Como the other day. Fun way to explore a different country!

BTW - we use live squid to catch Kingfish (or Kingies) in Australia- it’s like candy for Kingies. Very effective bait.

It really was good, I wasn’t pretending. 😉 It’s gotta be fresh through. We are heading back there in less than three weeks from now, and this time I want to catch a batch to bring home, and actually cook them up in a separate video. Fresh calamari battered and fried is just amazing.

Hi Jimmy, I was just at Lundbom a few days ago and the campground is indeed open. It's not too busy at all either so you should be able to get a good site without problems. Water is quite clear without much weed, temperature is reasonably good too. The fish were not biting that day but things can change pretty quickly. Have a great trip!

@@FishingwithRod Thanks for the info. I haven’t fished much up there but I fish a lot in Washington, montana and bone fish when I can afford it. Looking forward to dry camping with my new generac generator, Starlink sattellitte ha ha. I’ll be politely quiet. Not really roughing it. Hope to run into u some day. I have to stop in chilliwack on my way up to exchange dollars. Take care. I can’t wait for the journey 96. Jimmy G

Nice! I've also been looking at the Starlink setup for my remote work. You could also try Harmon Lake just ten minutes drive from Lundbom, which was fishing very well back in the spring months. Instead of driving toward Salmon, consider Leighton Lake by Tunkwa Lake instead, it was producing well last week.

@@FishingwithRod u will love Starlink. We have one at home since we live in the sticks and one for the rv. I can get 100-180 mps on the road. Pretty cool technology. I had a change in plans and I’m heading up tomorrow. Everything is good at work so I am going to take advantage of that. 😀 thanks for everything and I hope to fish with you some day. Jimmy

That guide sounded a bit short with you guys that's not a good advertisement for him.. "you are around my motor".. 🙄
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
No he wasn't short, far from it. That was a stressful moment for everyone there, the fish had gone way over to the other side of the boat and the line was rubbing all along the bottom and getting close to the motors. Anyone who runs the boat would know that can get disastrous pretty quickly.

Are people allowed to use live bait in saltwater? I thought the regs say you cant.

Awesome. I look forward to trying that technique. Were you keying a slack tide, high to low, or low to high?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
Thanks Andrew, mainly just the tide change, doesn't matter whether it's incoming/high, or outgoing/low. Change of tide is when all these fish (salmon, halibut, lingcod) start feeding madly.
@gurdipbering
@gurdipbering 2 года назад
13:13 why did you release a gaffed fish
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
That fish wasn't gaffed. The gaff was used as a release tool by sliding it down the line to the barbless hook. A quick flick and the fish comes off really easily.
@martinsmith9081

Rod, have you guys fished live squid on single action reels? Is there a reason you wouldn’t/don’t?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
We started with mooching with these squid but switched to the float method in the episode in 2019: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UuIbhRMzN90.html The float rig allows the squid to swim more freely along the water column so seems to get more bites that way. I guess we could slap on a centerpin setup instead of the spinning setup, that would be even more chaotic....
@rafabonati7757

Not using egi lures to catch the squid?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
I have some Egi squid jigs which I used to use in Australia actually, should have brought them along to the trip. 😉 We didn't use them mostly because we fish in pretty deep water to get these squid, and the bottom is so thick with squid you could just jig them up with any lure.

Giant ocean, and you still have 3 other boats within arms reach. Why?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
Those were all our guide boats. As big as the ocean is, sometimes bites take place in specific spots just like in lakes and rivers. In this case, we were keying in on the food source of these salmon - squid, which were found in this area during this tide change.

What rods Rod? 9 or 10ft.....10 to 20lb rating for the conventional? Your spinning rod looked lighter
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
The float rod is a 10'6" Shimano Technium baitcasting rod, rated 12 to 20lb I believe. The jigging rod is a 9'6" Shimano Clarus spinning rod, rated 8-12lb. Both rods are designed for freshwater salmon fishing, but work great in this fishery.

You know id appreciate you guys start promoting sustainability, you guys seem keep everything you guys catch out there. Our fisheries are going downhill big time. California oregon and washington are about to fully collapse and you guys will be next. You guys are nailing a ton a fish that are bound for our waters and i know hook and line isnt going to make a dent in numbers compared to the dam native nets, but you can at least start promoting a trend like some Of us have by releasing the big chinook safely and effectively without bringing them in the boat and keeping smaller fish to try and make a difference to see if we can start bringing back the fish we all love in the northwest. They will be gone before you know it and everyone will sit back and wonder what the hell happened. Its for surely sad but keeping fish over 20lbs at this point? Is it really necessary when you look at the return rates? Come on! is a chinook filet so important this year to where in 10-20 years from Now you wont have a chinook filet ever again? If you not educated on this fact read up on it rod. Get yourself a baker heavy duty hook extractor, bring the fish near the boat, wait until it stops struggling and gently grip the hook with the gripper pull the trigger and it will turn the hooks out the fishes mouth. This is for all fish. This channel need to start promoting sustainability efforts. I like your content but do the right thing and show people who do not know whats going on here how to keep fish around for generations to come. I don’t know what i will do if fishing the northwest disappears.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 2 года назад
Joey, you're making a lot of assumptions here without really knowing the background of our fisheries. Of course sustainability should be the number one priority and it can be practiced by a variety of approaches from catch and release, to stop fishing completely once you've harvested your catches. This particular fishery is limited to a specific area along our coast. Majority of the targeted chinook salmon are not Washington and Oregon bound, but they are heading to two particular hatcheries on Vancouver Island. That's why we have a 1 mile inshore fishing boundary. Fish size is also not entirely determined by genetics of the fish. There are some influences for sure, but if people want to see big fish, then there has to be a reduction of hatchery fish being pumped into the ocean from California all the way to Japan. At this point in time, we are injecting more salmon into the Pacific Ocean than ever. When carrying capacity is reached and primary production can no longer supply the demand, the end result is going to be smaller fish.
