As an Alaskan who watches the salmon migrate every year, I'm telling y'all do NOT want to eat those salmon. The only time you want to eat a salmon after they've changed colors is when they just start heading up the rivers, unless the migration to the spawning beds is really long and they can endure for a long time. The reason is that these fish start to deteriorate while they're alive because their immune system actually shuts down, so they become more susceptible to diseases and start to rot. Not only that, but they lose most of the good fats and other major nutritional value that makes them good eating due to the strenuous journey, to the point where bears will only catch them just to eat their eggs and brains since it's the only bits that are still nutritious. I also won't forget to mention that those are chum salmon, which many say is the least tasty of the pacific salmon and most people just smoke them or give them to their dogs to eat, which is where they get their other name from, "dog salmon", and they're especially popular amongst dog mushers way up North in Alaska. They're still edible, just not as good as the other four, although their eggs make for a popular caviar over in Japan called "Ikura". If you ever come to Alaska or can go anywhere else with salmon spawning streams, you can witness for yourself how gross the salmon get when they're about ready to spawn. Edit: for corrections
@@ThiccChickCrisha Alaska certainly a beautiful and wild place, it does have it's challenges but that's what makes living here worth while and freeing :)
Really hope they made it to their spawning grounds, can't imagine travelling thousands of miles just to get stuck in a tiny creek inches from where you need to be
Been to this very spot next to East Purdy Cutoff Road, next to the Skokomish River in near Hoodsport WA, and seen this first hand and that isn't a stream: It is a culvert across the road from the creek. These fish will all die before spawning. People have been asking to get the culvert fixed so they don't do this for over a decade now.
@@livenfree all types of migratory salmon stray. a small % simply get lost which is intentional from nature. this feature actually starts new salmon runs in other rivers and weeds out unfit genes.. i dunno this offshoots history. i.e was it always a death trap before being made into a culvert? or was it a spawning trib? sounds cold but nature works off eugenics. allowing unfit salmon to spawn is a widely understood as a serious issue
I'm glad i read your comment before posting similar. I have never been to this spot but it certainly looked like a culvert or a breakaway temporary water path from some main river/creek.
Why would you do them fish that !! That’s like being on the floor hurt and someone helping you up then kicking right in the knee and slinging your ass back on the floor!!! Just a stupid ass hole move !! ......!!!!!
@@jefferymeadows7671 Yes they do. Upstream, spurt out eggs and spunk-then die. I've been told some Alaskan salmon are already starting to rot before they get to their final destination. Such a strange biology.
@@jefferymeadows7671 yup they go upstream, I just said down stream because I was imagining myself going "down to the stream" from my place with buckets. I'll be careful with my fishing jokes next time 🤣😅
I’m sure those salmon are at their spawning location right there. The small and shallow creak is best for spawning. The shallow and small stream ensures that the eggs will be fertilized and as well as keeping the eggs from being consumed by other animals in the stream.

@@bellefemmenoire5508 you can do what ever you wanted to do to them. Make sure to wait untill they finished laying their eggs. Just dont interrupt their natural life cycle, or we'll end up losing tons of salmons.
For the ppl saying these fish are spawned. Never seen a spawned fish. These are chum salmon and aren’t even close to their spawning colours. They got up there in high water and got caught when the river dropped
@@midgetman4206 They were in the progress of going up the rivers to spawn and basically got landlocked on a stretch of river. He just means that they are not actively spawning as in laying eggs on their "beds" ect. When they are at that stage of actually spawning you definitely should let them be, they aren't good to eat and have finally made their journey to reproduce. But in this case they are not yet, so him disturbing them wont do any real harm.

@@KirkBlackJr If they exhausted from the entire journey then they used all their energy reserves, lactic acid built up and fat used up I'd expect. They'll feed the yabbies, crayfish etc If they are worth eating the bears would be feasting there instead of where they are harder to catch (but still full of nutrients and fats as energy).
If you guys ever see something like this and want to help the fish, please call the DNR/ your states Wildlife preservative number or you can put the fish in deeper water just don’t carry them by the gills
Most likely they already spawned and are not moving for a reason, they die after they spawn. They are dying unfortunately. But for real, grab all you can, clean them and carefully wrap for the freezer or you can smoke them to, that’s SO delicious!!!
Even in their dying form? They don't have any fat/flavor. Plus their Bodies are releasing nutrients into the environment for nature in general as well as their eventual offspring.
@@ShenpaiWasTaken I do not disagree with that. Growing up on the Skagit river we fished all the time, if they had recently spawned go for it, it they are belly up & sideways let nature take its course. In person you can tell a good fish from one that’s starting it’s dying process. But absolutely yes, some don’t touch, cooked will make you extremely ill.
Stupide , do not take fish from a river that near of the road +as you can see they are in reverse of the flow it mean that those are old males salmon , in bad shape, and unhealthy .
@Cameron no eggs usually that's all they eat they don't really like the Meat it isn't as rich as the eggs u see them usually they will just rip out the belly
I live in a country where we don’t have any salmon unless they are imported. They’re a fine & delicious treat and a 14 cm X 5 cm X 2 cm (LWAP) fillet (pan-seared) can cost up to US$10. I came here to ask if the living salmon in this clip are safe to eat and I got the answer before I even asked. 😁
A bears dream huh ? Damn then the bear and I have Great minds as we think a lot a like. . . LIL lemon pepper one night and some beer batter the NEXT and it's a fisk fry ! ! !
They'd sure love the eggs and brains of the fish, but probably wouldn't eat the whole fish once they get that far up the creek because they lose all their good fat.

Dude for real! Even tho this might be a man-made ditch, the predators are not able to sit here and eat, like other small estuaries. They are pushed further into the forest, and now the herbivores move towards the waterways. They no longer eat away the excessive brush and create trails and pasture. This leads to excessive undergrowth and extreme wildfires. Fucking nature bitches
I’ve seen this before actually up in Washington state. We actually went on a trail from Lake Washington, a small Creek as we went out but we found that salmon going. My sister thought the salmon or just put there on purpose, but the truth is now they lay their eggs in these little streams, and they die there. I also do you remember up in Alaska we have this creek that would connect from the lake and the sockeye salmon weed go either down or up the creek. It was a perfect fishing ground I’ll say.
Uhh.. they’ve always laid their eggs upstream. And being that’s the case it makes it a TERRIBLE fishing spot. They’re literally on a journey up river to spawn where they originally came from. Once they do that they die. If you went “fishing” at this spot, not only would you be subject to major fines and jail time but you’d be helping to decimate the salmon population.
I wouldn't be eating salmon toward the end of their spawnjng journey, but that's just me I guess. I was next-door neighbors with a tiny creek like this one where tons of salmon would spawn every year. They're exhausted and essentially torn to shreds by that point. Gross. Also, if you've lived near their spawning sites, youd know the smell is rank for ages after. If neither of those things are enough to put you off from eating them at that point, more power to you, I guess lol.
They are coming back from breeding, they only breed once then start to rot after, the fish here are already basically dead, they swam there to die and are rotting so they can't be eaten either
@@Ben-wf8rl ahh..the thing where they swim upstream to lay egg n dies isnt..i guess its not approriate to eat them..but still...sorry, was hungry when i was typing that i think 😂
Can we get an update on what you did when you were done filming? I would have kept what I wanted and I would have spent however much time needed to get them back in their full environment!
That is their environment Salmon go back to where they hatched to spawn & die. However by the time they mature and come back to their spawning grounds sometimes humans have changed the environment I'm sure they didn't expect it to be that shallow but they're going to do it anyway
@@dianecivis465 Nah, they are Chum Salmon. Hundreds always miss the tide and never make it. Has nothing to do with environmental changes. Natural selection is what happens in the wild.
Yeah it’s not uncommon especially way back in the day when the runs were enormous for you to find salmon in every little 6” tributary you could imagine.
Yes thank you I am Native from the Chinook tribe and we worship salmon. These are chum salmon and alot of people say they arent important because they dont taste as good as sockeye or king but they are extremely important to the ecosystem. My grandpa would give me lots of smoked chum he caught in the ocean. Very delicious.
@@paulcoenen7918 that's a stream of moving water, a small one, but still a stream. They don't just dump their unfertilized eggs in a stream in hope that by pure chance those eggs will meet up with the dumped males' sperm. They need to reach a still body of water for that, obviously. That ain't no destination.
@@serfranklin6022 They die because salmon die after they spawn, genius. I used to live near a small creek where hundreds would pile up every year and die. That's what happens. Most people here don't understand that by the time they're at their spawning site, they're not usually fit for human consumption since they've worked themselves to death, literally. Go crack a book, maybe.
There are small streams like that all over the country and world that you wouldn't expect to find big fish in but they are there and it's a wild sight to come across
That’s the life cycle of a salmon. They die after laying eggs. These dying ones are not good for consumption, unless you are a bear. If you take care of nature, it will give back in abundance. There lots of conservation efforts and projects going on to give this kind of result. People need discipline and just can not keep taking from nature. I wish people in the world stops overfishing and learn a sustainable way.
Pink salmon at that stage are rotten. They’re flesh is almost all white and they smell and taste disgusting. They are great nutrients for the soil and animals around though
@David Munir Lol by the tike they make it that far they've gone through changes that makes them not very good for eating. That's why the bears aren't there feasting. They get them earlier in the journey when the meat and fat is still good.
@David Munir You take one bite and get sick, these salmon are literally zombies and their flesh is decaying. You should look it up, its kinda scary honestly, they lose all sense of self and their only goal is to swim until they die
@@benjaminjames9712 as an Alaskan who witnesses this every year, this is not false. At most the only things the bears would be eating is the brains and eggs of those salmon, but once they get that far up the creek there's barely any nutritional value left in the flesh of the fish itself. This is common knowledge in my area amongst the fishermen and fish biologists.
When I was a kid living in Forest Grove, Oregon back in the late '80s, this was how me and my brothers caught our fish. We'd either wack them with a stick or shoot them with a slingshot.
