As a Beginner in the crazy world of Salmon Fishing there have been a few occasions where I had to resort to using a Spinning Rod rather than being able to use a Fly Rod. I thought that other people who were thinking about getting into Salmon Fishing might find my tackle choices interesting or useful.

My channel is called Cornish Chris the Fish. A god rod to look at is the Westin W3 11ft 3” spinning rod excellent value

@@CornishChrisTheFish Hi Chris They are Scandinavian but designed by fishermen for salmon and sea trout fishing I rate the Westin W4 and W 3 s the best salmon and sea trout rod I’ve ever used and believe me I’ve tried a few better than the Hardy marksman

You mentioned the Tay and the size and flow of the place. I'd therefore add a Megabass Vision 110 and a Megabass Vision 110+1 to my armoury. These have saved the day for me countless times. The +1 version goes a little deeper when the river is extra high. They cast much further than a Rapala due the the internal tungsten beads. They are not cheap unfortunately but copies are available on eBay etc. The Megabass is the original and best in my opinion and you will forget the cost when you've landed 4 and the guy next to you is scratching his head wondering what he is doing wrong.

@@CornishChrisTheFish No bother Chris. When you read the Tay catch reports and a fish is reported as being caught on a Vision these are the lures they are referring to.

I was on ebay earlier and getting a bit confused. Did yo say that the Visions sink or float, the only ones I can find on ebay describe them as either floating or suspended?

Either will be fine. The clear plastic bib is what takes the lure down. The +1 versions have a bigger bib. Search worldwide on eBay as Singapore, Japan and the U.S. are the biggest suppliers. I did notice the Glasgow angling centre have a decent selection online at the moment. Hth

Hi chris, nice setup. When you say cut the flying c hooks - assuming it is a treble with 3 barbs, are you just crushing 2 barbs, or actually cutting 2 of the 3 hooks off? Cheers

Hi George, that's right it was a treble that i cut off two hooks, so that is has just 1 single hook 👍.

A 3000 reel might be slightly small for larger rivers and big fish but you should be OK 🤞🎣 I only use the flying C lures when I'm casting upstream. It elimates deeply hooking fish to some extent. I also use 30 pound braid but I use a fluorocarbon leader of 20 pounds and about 3 feet long. It gives you a little shock absorption and if you get snagged solid then the leader snaps leaving just a short length of line stuck in the riverbed or tree or whatever. The fluorocarbon leader is also quite abrasion resistant compared to the braid main line and does help if a fish goes deep and finds snags and rocks.

@@CornishChrisTheFish I use 65lb Cox & Rawle Stainless Steel Ball Bearing Swivels to join the fluorocarbon leader to the braid. They are quite small compared to most swivels but they are really strong, really smooth and free spinning.

I could only find 85lb swivels, is this going to be okay or do they need to be 65lb? Also, would a blood knot be okay for tying these on?? Thanks
