Welcome to Ultimate Survival Gear! Today, I have another Salomon shoes review for you guys and this one is special, because this is Salomon X Ultra Low Pioneer review!

Let's start this Salomon review with some details
Advanced Chassis™ is a molded insert embedded in the outsole. Providing strong lateral support and reassuring protection, it also delivers optimal mobility and flexibility.
Chevron lugs. Lug design with deep penetration and multi-directional grip, improving traction on soft surfaces like mud or loose dirt.
Mud Contagrip®. Built for maximum grip on loose, soft, rugged, and uneven surfaces, Mud Contagrip® uses deep, sharp lugs made from a compound that focuses on adhesion.
EnergyCell. A high performance EVA foam that provides shock attenuation.
Anti-debris Mesh. Tight mesh that prevents debris from being trapped between your foot and the footbed.
Textile lining. A soft, breathable lining for extreme comfort.
SensiFit™ cradles the foot from the midsole to the lacing system, providing a secure, snug, and virtually customized fit all around the foot.

So, as you guys know these hiking shoes are inspired by the best Salomon hiking shoes, and one of the best hiking shoes in general, Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX Low! And these ones do not disappoint! Definitely one of the most comfortable hiking shoes for men that I have seen so far. Excellent comfort level, excellent traction and support.

Very nice review! The X-Ultra Pioneer tries to imitate the X-Ultra 3 but, for example, the inner sole here is just a foam layer and the midsole footbed is not the blue known from model 3 with the additional protection and support. All in all, the fact alone that Pioneer is flexible like the X-Ultra 4, the unacceptable successor of the ultimate X-Ultra 3, the non quick-lace system, etc, show that something is going on in the manufacturer's headquarters. Not to recall also the X-Alp MTN and the X-Alp Mid which had no competing models in the market, they were a kind on their own regarding the combination of use and terrain, but they discontinued these as well(!).

You have to try them on and really pay attention to fit/feel. I have Salmon Quest 4 GTX hiking boots. They are five years old used for lots of hiking/backpacking and they are excellent in every way. I bought these X Ultra Pioneer Mid to use in spring/fall fast hiking. Unfortunately, they are not nearly as good. I find the sole too thin. I can easily feel roots and small rocks underfoot. The collar is too stiff. This design combined a tongue which I find not wide enough, I cannot secure the boots as I want around my ankle. Adding to this and partly because of this, my left heel slips/rubs enough that in a day my heel becomes quite sore and swollen. I thought the boots felt fine in the shop but when out wearing for a couple weeks these issues came to light. I hope I can sell them and recoup some of my money to buy something more fitting.

Came across your review. I om looking into this shoe and have a question. What can you say regarding whether this shoe "mid sole" stiffness and if it is suitable or not suitable to use as a hybrid cycling+hiking shoe in your opinion?

I was considering the Carolina 6" Waterproof Composite Toe Circuit as a replacement for my almost done Danner Men's Caliper 3" that I got November 2022. They didn't last that long compared to the Timberland Men's White Ledge Mid Waterproof Ankle Boot I had before. I work on the road a lot for work so I'm looking for a shoe that will last a while and be comfortable. Long story short, put the Carolina 6" Waterproof Composite Toe Circuit on your to-do list please.

Thanks for watching! Yea definitely! In my opinion these are a great hybrid between trail running and hiking shoe, but if you want to get the most out of Salomon in their TR department, check out their speedcross 6!

I have the Salomon X ultra 3 low with the same sole. (3 years already) All I can say is its waterproof, warm and good in dry circumstances. But on slippery surface like ice, snow, watery surface like ceramics or stones its really slippery and doesn't give you the confidence to walk on it. Its especially a problem when you are climbing or hiking and have to step on wet stones as you feel like you are going to slip and fall. That's why my recommendation is going to be salewa mtn trainer gtx.

These do fit true to size, and because these are shoes, I'd probably go with the regular shoe size.

Wouldn’t say so. I own both pairs, and I can tell you that the X Ultra 4s are better, especially with the Gore Tex in them. When it comes to waterproofing, Gore Tex tops anything else.
