I've had to work 2 jobs to stay off the streets for years it's difficult but nothing beats a hot shower and a roof every night. I'm from Cali and cannot imagine being homeless in these mountain blizzards.

When I was homeless my camp moved every day. It was more akin to Backcountry backpacking in and around the city than this destructive sadness 😭 homelessness, van life, tiny homes it's all a symptom of a systemic societal problem. It will get worse before it gets better.

The problem is that they would result in the same unkept/dangerous situation with high crime. Better to put these folks in camps where they can earn their way and someone is there to enforce rules.
@Quagthistle
@Quagthistle 2 года назад
Most people would call that "enabling them", and demand harsher supervision for these people, which, of course, will only make them "choose to live outdoors", as the health worker chose to phrase it. If you are an addict, for example, especially if you are an addict due to untreated medical or psychiatric issues, your need to take drugs will make it impossible for you to live under the "Big Brother" rules of many of the "homeless programs". Worse, for people who have been terribly abused by the medical or psychiatric systems, these programs amount to little more than literal torture. They aren't going to volunteer for such a fate. They'd rather die in the hills, and, having personally seen just how cruel doctors can be, I can't blame them for that. Furthermore, Utah is well-known for having high property values, meaning that many people are priced out of the market and onto the streets. All that being said, I, too, think that camping areas with proper sanitation are a better option than just having homeless squatters being shoved out as their makeshift homes are destroyed. Where are these people supposed to go where they can live free from harassment? They have no money, or they wouldn't BE homeless in the first place. Thus, they can't buy land on which to live. Surely, in all the land we have here in the US, there's somewhere these people can live without someone standing over them with a stick ready to proverbially beat them for putting a toe out line.

The homeless girl they talked to told the real problem. She wanted to find housing without testing. What kind of testing you ask? Drug testing. My sister had the same problem. Now she is dead, because living on the streets wasn't enough to get off drugs. Housing without testing would just enable them more. When we would take her in her drug use went up. She would tell my parents she needed a ride to the store to buy groceries and would meet her dealer there to get drugs.... Drug addicts don't care who they hurt, they just care about being as comfortable as possible while as High as possible...

There needs to be a multi pronged solution to homelessness. You need to tackle the reasons why people become homeless in the first place. You also need to improve the shelters so people actually want to stay. Drug treatment, job training, housing. All of this will take time and money. As sad as it is to move people, the environment needs to be protected from degradation. The lines of RVs, tent camps, etc. where crime is rampant need to be dismantled and the people need to be helped.

Cleaning up these sites doesn't solve homelessness! How about giving the homeless a HOME??? Then helping them to KEEP their home! Then giving them the help they need in others areas of their lives??? But this would require LOVE and Compassion. Something that is in very short supply in the U.S.
@larsonfamilyhouse
@larsonfamilyhouse 2 года назад
Yes, build a shelter there for EVERYONE. No terms and conditions, just an urban campground. Trash and recycle bins, bathrooms, and a few shelters. Heck, pay someone who lives there to be a property manager and give them a phone so they can report if anything needs fixed. It could easily run itself with next to no upkeep. Could even exchange trash and recycling for cash like I saw them do somewhere else. Help people out.

Salt Lake needs to catch up with the times. Skid row in LA knows this won't be going away any time soon. So they have placed puplic portable toilets and mobile showers to help these people. They've even got a community laundry mat so they can have clean clothes. The city rents out unused parking lots and allows people to come in for the night to park and sleep in their car or van. These parking lot community's have a tent kitchen with a hand and dish washing area and microwave's. The majority of homeless people I've interviewed do want help they just don't have a clue where to start. It would also help to open up a few more mental health facilities. Many have mental illness but are not receiving medication. It's not going away any time soon it will grow on a daily basis until real help is available.
@americandirt7834
@americandirt7834 Год назад
Imagine, coming from LA (or anywhere in California for that matter) and thinking you have any business giving advice to other states on how to handle homelessness. What a joke. Part of the reason California is basically overrun with this vermin is because they've enabled it. Those portable toilets and showers get trashed within days, because that's how these people treat hand-outs. Quit giving them Narcan; let them OD. Arrest them--they're already breaking the law--and throw them in institutional drug treatment programs.
@magical8013

They will never do anything like California here. So most likely everything's going to get a lot worse before it gets better, it already has instead of having one big homeless encampment downtown in the Rio Grande area now they have at least a hundred of them all over the place because of operation Rio Grande and I think that operation cost 10 million taxpayer money

Yeah it's really a problem of rental companies (who are often owned by huge corporate conglomerates) don't want to rent to poor people. Too much risk for them, and they can't sue or really do anything if a poor person trashes the house. But their policy creates an issue. Even if you're making 15$ an hour, that's only 2k a month after taxes. By their standards, that's not even enough to qualify for the cheapest studio apartment. Their 3x income and other arbitrary stipulations are part of what causes homelessness. We really should have regulation in housing. Companies shouldn't be able to discriminate against the poor so long as they make enough to pay the rent.

Sure...it’s next to the Capitol. But it’s also next to the LDS Church headquarters who hoard billions of dollars and only about 1% goes to charity. Imagine if they used those funds for affordable housing or at least temporary shelter, education, medical help, free birth control (including optional vasectomy/tubes-tied AND abortions), education/trade training, mental healthcare... you know items that actually help people instead of pass-along proselytizing cards.

Well said! LDS church is the biggest cult in the world. It’s so sad how brainwashed it’s members are. I lived in Utah for 3 years and the Mormons were the least compassionate, unfriendly, arrogant, bigoted group of people I ever met. They will never donate a dime to the homeless because the poor people will never be able to donate money back into their cult!

This issue could be solved fairly easily. You can build free housing on public land with either trailers or tiny homes. Provide security, food, transportation and social services so that people would get help and support. Now they have a secure and free place to live. So, you can now tell them you can either live in the free place, pay for your own housing, leave, or go to jail, but you won't be sleeping on the streets or in the woods anymore. It would take some money, yes, but it would be better for everyone if we didn't have homeless encampments and far better for them.
@chrismorgan283
@chrismorgan283 2 года назад
The tiny house communities in Los Angeles are in high demand. They offer laundry facilities, mail boxes, and more, and people really want to be there. It's a great stepping stone to get a lot of people back on their feet, because a lot of people just need that small boost to help them. Furthermore, they don't cost all that much, or take up a lot of land. Utah really needs to follow California's lead.
