I live near Portland Oregon, which is having a terrible problem with homelessness, as rent is very high. People are living in campers, tents, doorways, etc. But the City and the County keep quoting outrageous prices to house them, millions and millions of dollars. It seems to me they could buy each of them a tiny house, outright, for less than the money they claim to need. It sounds like Salt Lake City is doing it more sensibly.

I might be cynical but how long before it's taken over by illegals who'll ruin it for everyone. They're destroying hotels then refusing to stay there, these tiny homes are wonderful and will be a huge forward step for people like that lady but how long will it benefit people like her?

I am in Eugene. We have little mini huts now. I don’t think they are as nice and warm as these. It’s better than tents, but these look pretty nice. It would be nice if they made them a little larger for a couple or a family too.

Incredible Tiny Homes in Newport TN has a 20k tiny house. They've been reaching out to different cities to offer them in bulk at lower prices.

This is a bit of mercy but not an ultimate solution. There's no plumbing. Housing needs to be made affordable across the board. Period.

@@motophone8794I agree. This is a great idea but..... even after the upfront costs, they're still costing $333.33 for each unit, each month (based on the numbers quoted by the reporter). That still seems like alot of money for what they're offered.

A lot of those migrants are homekess. If you really want to fix it, make the rich pay their fair share in taxes. The top 3 corporations paid little or no taxes because of tax cuts. Why do think Repugs don't want to fund the Treasury, its so they can't go after the rich. Its a lie when they say the increases, which are in reality making up cuts by Repugs, are after the poor. Most of the poor has fairly easy returns. Its the rich who try multiple tax rip offs and take multiple agents and time. The IRS is not coming after regular people.

@@sv4996 do you know that a lot of people become addicts through their doctors??? I had a back injury, I was prescribed oxycontin. I didn't realize that I was addicted until my insurance changed and wouldn't cover my medication anymore. Most things are seldom black and white... Lots and lots of grey. Maybe instead of being so judgmental, volunteer at a homeless shelter and talk to people, listen to what they've been through. There are absolutely criminals in the homeless population, but so many people commit petty crimes to SURVIVE.
@jmo53214.
@jmo53214. 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely it gives some privacy, but my first thought is a SAFETY. I used to volunteer working with the homeless. Some people got into the situation by poor choices, sure, but so many people have devastating things happen well beyond their control. So many Americans are a couple paychecks away from the same fate. I can't tell you how many people would bring us to the site of their tents or makeshift shelter, and it have been burned to the ground or destroyed by other homeless people or unbelievably, just by people who are heartless. One man that I specifically remember had this dog that got really really hurt in a sabotage event. The only thing he was able to hang on to after losing everything because his father got sick and that man lost his job as they wouldn't accommodate his changing needs to help care for his dad, was his dog. It was so heartbreaking... It's NOT just drugs, crime, or bad life choices that land these folks on the streets. Really really encouraged to see this, hope it spreads to other cities!!

Yes I lost my husband and had to move in with my mom who has been a drunk for years. I help her around the house and pay rent she's in a small single wide, and I pay her rent, it leaves me with very little money left over. I had no where to put my things when I moved so I have what I could fit in my car . Over the past 2 years, my mom randomly puts me out,I have no where to go and no savings so I slept in my car , I haven't had a hair cut or bought makeup in 2 years , only a pair of work shoes and pants, no new purses no shopping spree at the thrift store, I live on soup and ravioli and bread . And after 2 years of being put out on the streets I never rented a room for the night or week I used my car . I saved up enough to buy an old used RV , I don't have running water but it came with a tankless water heater, I do have a generator and propane stove. So I have lights and heat . It needs some work for sure but this little box is so precious to me! I can sleep without drama going on keeping me up , I have a place I won't be put out on moments notice, after I finish fixing it up , I'm going to get a haircut, my hair is Soo long I can only wear it up . ... I'm going to get some mascara 😁 and go to the thrift store and get a new outfit. God is good and it's good to go thru things in life ,it's not easy,it's not always fun .....I know I had my no children to have to worry about and it was just me and my mom , I can't imagine the situations that others are in . I'm very lucky my mother was a God fearing woman most of her days, and had pity on me when I was desperate, however she reminded me every day that she was taking me in and all of her wants superceded my job and sleep. I honestly had a hard time with the constant reminder and all the talks about how I'm a burden,tho I was doing for her , cleaning a home that hadn't been gone thru in 15 years making space for her to move around getting the yard bk in order cooking errands ECT ...... I just can't imagine how hard it's got to be on others I just knew when I worked for charities over the years that I really didn't understand.... Now I have a lil more understanding.... I thought I was going to end up a charity case at different times..... But I haven't suffered I haven't literally been homeless for very long at a time. It was very hard to work and live in my car ... You get dirty like I can't explain it, doesn't matter how many times u wash up , can't get truly comfortable physically or mentally which means you don't sleep well and are tired the next day, after a few days your exhausted and irritable, defeated, feel like crying thru out the entire day.. .you see people going in Thier front doors as you drive around thinking about having your own front door..... Missing your household chores, missing all of life it feels like in that moment ..... having no options thinking will I ever make it ..... Looking in the mirror not recognizing who your looking at...... 😢. I'm not the outgoing person I was, but I'm getting her back slowly..... I pray that others should have at least a safe room to come home to . It really matters. This isn't the fifties where you can just come across a farm and start a new life ..... There's a credit system in place that will prevent me and many others from being able to bounce back........ Which used to be a thing in America,you could bounce back from anything with some hard work. And hard work good work ethic would get u fixed up real quick..... But not anymore you must have credit and good credit to rent to get electric and maybe even water excellent credit for natural gas. And anyone helping you out going to be wanting something and more in return, basically your an indentured servant .....and imagine all the bad people out there looking to take advantage of people who are in stable

You're so right. It just kills me when people make knee jerk assumptions about why someone is in the circumstances they're in... So many people are a paycheck away from losing everything and a broken limb or an illness could land them on the streets. Not everyone who is homeless is an addict or is a criminal. We've got to do so much better as a society.

This is wonderful, and for those who understand the value will get the positive that they need from it; The downside is a lot of homeless individuals whom I’ve interacted with as a former LEO have refused help into housing and other programs to get them off of the streets because they’re so deep into their addictions that they refuse to collaborate with anyone for the sake of “living on their own terms”. I really hope more things change as I understand [addiction] is a difficult beast to overcome, and we need more innovative solutions to help those individuals as well.

A little bit of hope goes a long way. And those can be done cheaper than that. Just having that roof w heat and air boosts morale and self esteem. It allows those able to gain and keep employment and people will take off from there. Tiny homes w working bathrooms can be done for less than $1500 each. Idk how much to run, but its well worth it. Imagine what can be done if people w the ability donated time and resources to cut the pod costs down. Either way I don't know why this took this long, I've been carrying on about it forever. Sadly I'm homeless currently however when I am able I regularly help anyone out there, it breaks my heart. People need to stand up and fight for this. I promise the skeptics just that little bit will change and save lives. Communities will be cleaner, safer more productive. This is very exciting!!

The max income for 1 person is approx $19000 (before tax) for social services. That is $9.13/hr x 40hrs. The wait list for Section 8 is long. As great as this is how does it fix the overall problem that the numbers don't add up to help. Especially people with no children.

This is an excellent solution because rent is only getting higher and people are resorting to buying sizable vans to live in. Sizable rents are forcing people to resort to living in their own cars. Chicago rent has also risen up for those with subsidized rent. HUD has kept up with regular rent costs. Utah seems to be the first state willing to actually take a huge step into helping their homeless. Its time for the other states to show support and follow suit. This makes one wonder how in the world are states like NY and IL going to manage with the new migrants they have and those coming in.

Now they'll just need about 200,000 more of these in Utah and about a half million of these in California

Where is the bathroom/shower? Other than that, I hope my city does this.

Proof it doesn’t cost as much as some government officials lead us to believe that homelessness can be solved. Sending hugs to those who struggle with homelessness, mental health issues and unemployment.
