Sawyer acknowledged on a podcast recently that it was a mistake making skill-based dialogue options almost always the objectively best ones in FNV, and in Pentiment they fixed it by still telling you which lines are unlocked by your choices, but they can be bad; that way your roleplaying is acknowledged but you have to consider your words.
I'd say the problem is more to the engine than the design it self. For exemple, saving Necropolis in the first game is entierly based on you Repair skills, to repair their water pump which will make them survive thrive. You dont go in dialogue for that and thats the main issue with FNV and 3. If you could have the best outcome because you wished it, the game would be just a VN with FPS gameplay. F4 actually does it in some quests, and its not actually pretty to see.
@@theberserker6000 What distinction you're trying to draw, there's plenty of quests and general interactions you solve with skills outside of dialogue, FNV's innovation was adding other skills to conversations. Not sure what your last point means.
@@aspacelex There was other skills than speech in dialogue too before man, FNV didnt do anything new. What I meant is simple, because of the limitation of the engine we see more interaction in dialogues rather with the world environement, using your skills to get over an obstacle, quests or simply for curiosity. Thats also because FNV is more a console game than PC game compared to the classic so in terms of interactions its not all up there but here we are right now.
Pentiment fuckin rules. Shit that seems useless can be what makes or breaks you. Remember kids, always pray lest you get called out on it in a public forum
@@theberserker6000 reading your comments feels like the ramblings of an alcoholic Gen Xer who can't get his 1999 copy of Fallout 2 working on his crusty-ass brick of a computer
Voice of Uncle Sam the Info Dumping Barkeep here. A little late on the discovery of this video, but I find it very cool to see people highlight this mod and also acknowledge the amount of dialogue Uncle Sam had. A little bit of info on that, the mod creator had the role of Uncle Sam as the only non-volunteer work and was actually paid due to sheer amount of lines with the ghoul voice. I was very early in my voice work at the time and by the end of recording I nearly tore my throat out but I definitely enjoyed contributing to such a unique mod for New Vegas. 👍
I kind of wish that you could visit the ruins of Salt Lake City, with it being similar to the Glowing Sea with buildings being near obliterated, high density of enemies, some great loot or even being able to find the bodies or former residence of the Survivalist's family.
I know your comment is seven months old, but this crosses my mind every time I imagine Utah in fallout lore. I imagine it would be worse than the glowing sea in the Salt Lake Valley because just look at the way it holds smog today! 💀
the issue I have when I write my mods is that the amount of people who actually care and are going to listen through all the lines and not just skip to the quests. its hard to balance this to what people want to play so I keep it for what I want to play, the info dump is optional and not overwhelming. IM NOT THE DEV OF THIS MOD BTW IM ANOTHER MOD DEV
if I can go with a suggestion, have the key character go "would you rather the full explanation or the abridged one"; the player that does not care will take the quick way, while the other will stay and listen for the full thing
As someone from salt lake at 18:32 that is actually how it really is. I can go skiing, go downtown the desert, then go into canyons all in one day. The only thing out of place is the marsh which I could see happening somehow 200 years after being nuked.
I think when the mod first released, the Traveller at the beginning of the mod spawns in Zion rather than outside of Goodsprings. In addition, he would only appear after you resolved the main quest of the Honest Hearts DLC. I'm happy to see this is no longer the case because I can imagine most players not being able to discover this NPC naturally before leaving Zion. I also remember a bounty style quest in Arid Creek that I was stuck on for hours because the NPC I was looking for didn't have a unique name. He instead was just called resident or something, and there were like 10 other NPCs with that name. The base game and other quest mods drilled into me the habit of only talking to unique NPCs, and to not waste my time with generic background characters, so this quest was a kick in the nuts for sure. As for the vehicle travel system. I absolutely adore it. Sure it's a bit tedious, but I was blown away by the fact that this game could even include something like this. It blew me away when I first used it.
I preferred starting in than the Goodsprings start, which felt artificial. but the Zion start wasnt handled the best sadly, so I get why it was unpopular.
I was just thinking about where I can move that truck for something less of "Another Goodsprings mod start" thing. Hearing it was starting at Zion before surprises me, coz that would actually make a perfect location for that (Considering the events of the mod itself), don't know why they've changed it...
One the things I always think about when considering Fallout 2 is the very end part with a scientist whom you can convince to release the virus into the are of the Enclave oil rig. He quotes from 'The Tiger' a poem by.. William Blake or some other dead guy. It's part of two poems that work as a pair, the other being a lamb. I didn't know that til much later. The lamb is about how sweet and harmless the lamb is. The Tiger speaks of it's beauty and ferocity, asking did god who made the lamb, really also make the tiger? There's no god, but there is beauty and ferocity both in mankind. In the nuke. It's a terrible, destructive thing. It is beautiful and fierce. I will always remember "When the stars threw down their spears, and watered heaven with their tears, did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the lamb make thee?" I'm not religious, nor was that scientist npc probably. But he knew what he was doing, the weight of the task, the terribleness of either choice, to kill the enclave or let them kill so many more. Anyone, I hope no one reads my stupid comment and wastes their time. If you did, thanks.
I love this series of videos. As a nv player I have barely dipped my toes into quest mods, having really only played the frontier and the someguy series. I truly do appreciate you taking the time to make these hybrid review/analysis videos on much smaller quest mods I would have not heard of otherwise.
I actually played the original fallout not long ago after not having played it for over a decade. Decided to do a 1 int run and I forgot how fucking funny it was. Nobody wants anything to do with you and unless you know what to do you have no idea because you literally can't form words. It's the best thing ever
Big fan. I am actually someone who helped work on this mod, I was the Voice actor of the following characters: Julian Tom The toddler Old Scotty Mr masao Lanceng And Niko. The author was a very kind and talented man. But like you said some parts were cut because of timing which was a bit of a let down. But I did really enjoy voicing the mod. And each character had to have a unique style of talking to represent their personalities. I could go into detail into how but I won't since I don't want to bore you. Overall I'm glad you enjoyed this mod, I haven't voiced stuff in some time but stuff like this makes me think maybe I should get back to voicing stuff again. Great video
This mod looks so sick, and you've emphasized some of the coolest bits. Thank you for putting in the effort to share this more easily accessible summary of it with us, I might get into FNV again for this mod.
I was so nervous you were gonna roast SLCS. I absolutely love the mod, and its one that is always in my order, and I'm glad you like it to! Will you be doing mods like Tales of New Reno or Th3 Overseers series of mods?
@@ramblelime i know fallout tales of new reno might seem weird on the first two but i actually think tales of new reno two might might rival AWOP with most amount of content to explore in a mod. Also you might be put off by weird sex content but coito ergo sum unironically is one of the best quest mods ive ever played. in a similar way to solve problems it doesnt hold your hand when solving the quests.
@@obsidiancrow450 Coito Ergo Sum is honestly one of the most uncomfortable mods I've played in a good way, really helps the post-post apocalyptic feeling and almost reminding me of Mad Max but darker.
Love this mod, happy to see it getting well-deserved attention. :) Like you, I wish they'd done more with it, but unfinished gems will always have an enduring appeal for me. Great video!
Seeing someone mention Bethesda's fallout as a different interpretation rather than just "bad because different" is so refreshing. I personally prefer the classics and NV but I can appreciate Bethesda's fallout from a different angle
I did that with Jreg back in the day and regretted it immediately, waiting for new uploads is pain. I'd much rather limit the amount of content I watch from channels I really like so I always have good shit to watch.
The head tone error is the most cursed part of any mod P.S. I have a question: Could you cover TTW’s rebuild the capital “submod”? Forewarning: I don’t recommend any interior mods. Also there’s a patch for TTW with “Claim the Mojave (And the Capital)” if you wanna use that mod, too.
I heard he was a bit underwhelmed. With hard fights and too easy fights scattered around the map. I don't think it's a problem if you're going to level 10 or 20, I haven't actually tested it
Honestly one of my favorite mods in new vegas, I loved the quest design, the variation in the areas and the music was 👌 I might replay it again with the enhanced version
I just played through Fallout 1 for the first time and have wanted to revisit New Vegas, So this video has given me a great middle ground between the two to enjoy.
Wow, after seeing his review, this is both kinda funny and kinda sad. Both the Legion and the Brotherhood wound up having very good stories in The Frontier, but they got buried by the absolute bloody shitstorm that was the NCR questline and the initial weirdo crap that people snuck in.
I chose to take Norah with me as a companion. I know that sounds bad, and I still made an alternate save where I took her to the valley women, but I figured that with my Courier's high rep with the NCR, and his ridiculous amount of wealth, he could give her a lot more opportunities in life. The NCR has universities, prospering cities, and is generally a safe place; she could have a good education and the financial support to go into any career she wants, or even just to attend therapy with an actual psychologist (assuming the NCR has those). That's my thinking, at least. Plus traveling with her gives Last of Us vibes and I can't pass that up.
considering the modder that made this intended for Norah to be the companion you take from the mod into the base game and planned for her to have extra quests/ voiced comments on locations and base game companions and events but never got round to adding is a factor i don't think leaving Norah to collect mushrooms in a swap or live as a tribal is the right thing to do especially considering she lost her family to a psycho and without The Courier the same could happen again
I really enjoy your reviews. I'd be interested to hear your opinion about my own mods sometime. I’d hold off on playing The Deterrent though as I’m currently working on a content update. Race To The Bottom on the other hand was a completed passion project of mine! Fallout New Vegas has such a good list of quest mods to go through! It's interesting to see someone go through the same experiences I did!
Emil Pagliarulo had nothing to do with Far Harbor I believe, out of all the things to shit on Fallout 4 for (and there's a ton of them) Far Harbor is not one of them
This mod looks sick and I'd love to play it. BUT I have one serious gripe. What's with the use of Tā Moko on the tribals' faces? Tā moko is very culturally significant for Māori, and removing it from its context and putting it in a New Vegas mod set in Salt Lake is jarring! That said, I don't know how much to blame the mod author for this really, seeing as in modernity a lot of indigenous imagery worldwide is viewed as interchangeable. For anyone who wants to know, here's some basic info about what Tā Moko actually means (though bear in mind this is from a Pākehā--European-descended New Zealander--perspective). Tā moko is a traditional form of tattoo that comes from various indigenous people groups from Aotearoa/New Zealand. It's a tradition that goes back many centuries for Māori, and the patterns will differ by iwi (tribe) and hapū (sub-tribe). I've had it explained to me by a woman who wears it as both a way of acknowledging maturity, status, achievement and service, and telling the story of one's ancestors. Women typically wear it only on the chin, while men will have theirs added to over time, and the moko may build over someone's life to cover the whole face. There is too much to put into a youtube comment to do moko justice. I think it's important to start to educate about this stuff though, if we are to move away from the mindset of indigenous peoples as interchangeable. Moko isn't just a bunch of markings to put on a tribal character to make them look cool and different, it's practice that was almost lost and is having its significance fought for in modern society, along with the Māori language and various other practices here in Aotearoa. We shouldn't rob it of its context like this! I may still play the mod, but this aspect is uncomfortable for me. Not sure whether to blame the mod author too much, like I said, but it'll at least make that section of the mod a bizzare experience! I know this isn't related to the video overmuch in the grand scheme, but I do think it's an important point to bring up. If you read it, thanks!
You gotta make a video essay on Th3Overseer's mods, they run together like Someguy2000's (apart from the most recent one which is about a remote hippie commune called The High Desert). If you want a series of mods that goes DEEP it would be this. It starts off with The Initiation, Eliza/North Road Remastered (I think they run around the same time), and finally the Depths of Depravity for the full story, I don't think the series is fully done yet, considering you still have the big bad guy to deal with.
As someone who didn't ever play the original Fallout, I found much of the game and quest-design frustrating, but I slowly became more and more absorbed as the world map slowly opened up. Frustration lead to immense reward, and I realized that I was starting to spend hours exploring every character for interesting nuggets of world building. It's incredibly compelling, and I still wish I got to explore more of the Salt Lake and it's history.
My favorite game of all time is Morrowind and New Vegas is up there as one of my favorites though so following the journal will come easy to me. I definitely should try this one out. Which is funny because those shacks in the swamp area look like they are from Morrowind
i think implementing a trivial reputation system would be complimentary to the intuitive dialogue options because we really don't know what someone thinks about us in real life, we can only know by assumptions and guessing. It'll make the gameplay fun thinking the faction liked you by not saying much about your actions, but then they'll pull a "You're not coming with us anymore after you did this"
why are all the top ten/thirteen games blurred, aside from the fallouts and beginner's guide? i was able to identify most of them, but the one down and the the left of deus ex is so blurred i can't even make it out. what game is that?
You ever play the Terrain Starship Command mod for fallout 3? Id like to see a review of that mod, its incredibly long and very fun to rp as a supreme leader of a starship fleet
I made a short little video about planescape a few years ago. It's not my usual style and it's not my best work- I'd love to come back to it one day. One of my favourites
please review Mothership Zeta crew next! One of my fav Fallout mods of all time, I have fond memories playing it, but haven’t revisited it in awhile, would save me the trouble of remodding all of 3 and beating Mothership Zeta lol
Bro when j was younger I was convinced my mom was paying my best friend to have out with me cause I was so weird I thought no one would want to hang out with me
Okay but… the lore of Fallout 1 and 2 is bloody phenomenal! I love the gameplay, design heck even the soundscape of them too - but my god! As a self proclaimed “Lore-Whore” (a term of my own creation). Fallout 1 and 2 are like cocaine!
On that first bit, before I forget to comment, I wanna know if anyone shares my opinion; As someone who 100%'d the first and *most* of the second. . . Gameplay: Bad Story: Bad Second game in particular just can NOT hold me with its story, very hard to take it seriously. Something about all the characters reminds me of Beavus and Butthead.
Animal Friend FTW! I don't want to kill regular animals and besides IRL, most wild animals will actively avoid humans, unless they're starving, protecting young, etc.
