Salt Water Shore fishing: Why use a Conventional Fishing Reel vs Spinning reel?

Salt Water shore fishing varies from beach fishing, pier fishing and jetty fishing to fishing brackish marshy shorelines. A conventional reel will sometimes be more effective than a spinning reel, and vice versa. Different terrains sometimes call for specialized gear. Today we are talking about when you should use conventional fishing reels and when you should use the standard spinning reel.

Last night I hooked up with what had to be a 20# flathead. Had it at the gunwhale on the boat. It had been spinning a lot. That's what they do. At the last second it flipped it's tail and spit the lure into the boat. Waved bye bye with it's right fin then splashed me with it's tail. Was using a pretty light rig with 20# test braided line. Rhino rod. El cheepo. At least I got to see mine. ;)

You should do a video on “how to scale your drag”. It’s basically setting the drag at a percentage of the line weights breaking strength using a hand held fishing scale, around 25%.You’d be surprised how tight your drag should be for 10-12 lb. braids.

I bought my first bait caster rod and line for $ 2. 98 cents back in the 1950's guess I'm old anyway I do a lot of surf fishing here in Florida and using top gear like Shimano's spinning reels in the $ 200 range even though I rinse after each use I found bearings have a habit of seize up or something else breaks after a year or so I send them back to factory some times in a baggie since I can't seem to repair or fix myself Shimano charges $ 25 and normally sends me a new reel which takes 6 to 7 weeks to get back what a great service but a loss of fish time. I recently purchased a Seigler SM bait caster multipier reel lifetime warranty spooled with 20lb mono and a 12foot surf rod I can cast further than my surf spinning reel outfits with less sinker weight and the control of big brutes is much better and I actually out cast an air launch bait tube guy on the beach today. I can take a part a bait caster and do a deep clean and grease without any problems but my hands and those small screws defeat me every time especially the bailer. True it takes time to learn to throw the multiplier reel but once you do you will be using the spinner much less.

Sup Senko, been fishing with conventional reels for some time I realize that taking off the line laying control increases your casting distance. Here in Hawaii we use the pen senators 4/0 and up for ulua fishing with 13 foot poles. I always wet the line before casting lessons the burn on the thumbs when casting a sinker. And yes still get that birds nest even after all these years. Keep doing what you, tight lines and Aloha from Hawaii.
@RonDevito
@RonDevito 2 года назад
Are these the 100-lb fish you hurl a sinker out, then use a second rod and slide a big bait out with a mechanism that travels over the the line from the first rod?
@marquezfamily2378
@marquezfamily2378 2 года назад
@@RonDevito it's one of the ways we fish called hang bait. In the mainland they call it trolley fishing. Other ways is to cast out a heavy sinker 6oz to 12oz to break away line. Bait is slid down fish sets the hook and the slide stops at a buckle. Lead line breaks and the figh begins.

Bad advice saying to use the free float tensioner to control the spool. It adds pressure to the spindle and cauae wear to the spindle. Get a reel with a braking system, either centrifugal or magnetic. The use of using the free float use to be the way untill reels were made with more effiecient systems to slow the spool down

Senko Skipper if you have the current they are nice to just drop and let drift. Issue here in Florida, as you explained is the wind. It’s rare that we have a fishing day without 5-15 mile an hour gusts and the backlash..... The thing is the gearing on the penn vs my van staals.. it’s actually pretty fair comparison but on the smaller reels you just don’t get the power..

Skipper.... what is your opinion on levelwind vs non-levelwind for salt water striped bass and blue fishing? Up in NYC metro, the few surf casters who even use conventional prefer non-levelwind, the rationale being a large, heavy fish can destroy the mechanism. There is a slight casting distance penalty with the levelwind as well. For pier fishing, I'm using Ugly Stik 6' pole with an ancient Penn Levelmatic 940 spooled with 20 lb Trilene Big Game mono. I would not put braid on a rod I'm dead-sticking and not on these older reels (unless with mono backing). For these species would you use a current production Abu Garcia C7000, an Avet 6/4 MC Raptor, or an equivalent sized Daiwa Saltist?

Conventional Reels are boat reels, There's more choices in the market with spinners for Inshore fishing. Spinners are easier to cast cause they were designed and intended for casting over the shoulder. Conventional reels weren't designed or intended for over the shoulder casting.

I like the baitcasters, that is, those with magnetic brake, in addition to the normal star drag. Set to 5, it's the best of both worlds.
@ertren6
@ertren6 3 года назад
If you have proper thumb control, you should be able to set the brakes to 0. Those things cast a lot further without brakes
@maaifoediedelarey4335
@maaifoediedelarey4335 3 года назад
@@ertren6 Yes, of course, however essentially if you do that though, you are talking about the traditional multiplier reels which I grew up with (and still have), like the Penn 49, Penn 500L, up to modern day versions like the Daiwa Saltiga, Shimano Thorium etc. These are not baitcasters though, have no magnetic (or even centrifugal) brakes, and mostly lack level winders as well, it's just you, your thumb and the open reel (though the spool tension knob is crucial using those reels). So why/when would I use a baitcaster instead of them ? When I'm casting and retrieving paddletail jigheads, spoons etc whilst standing chest deep in strong tide. Use the traditional multiplier you describe only makes sense if you want to cast a fresh bait in deep onto a sandbank without much wading, and then either stand with your rod, or put it into a rodholder for another rod cast. Different things have different uses, I still use both kinds for both uses, as described.

Great fishing dude! Striper fishing is the best! My favorite along with Corvina. I think its amazing to be able to catch them from the bank like that! A lot less expensive than a boat for sure. But if I may, one thing I noticed that you are doing in the excitement is reeling against the drag while your fish is pulling line. This causes your line to twist up and its hard on your drag system. But your a great fisherman!

Steve G i get out around 160yards with bate and 6oz but usually the old man that is not even standing to cast and using the same Bates as me catches more than anyone. Usually once you got a line in the water you got a chance and most of the action is 30ft to 60ft out so spinning reels are all good and some people don't think the added confusion is worth it. It's like driving stick is fun for some and not for others. Getting birds nestled with new line is like doing a burnout and sliding into a tree lol.
@steveg8322
@steveg8322 6 лет назад
@@terrencewrigley8860 I use all three types of reels.When flyfishing fish will only take lures that can't be cast with either spinning or baitcasting, once some very large trout were feeding on insects that were as small as ground black pepper, if you didn't fly fish you just didn't catch any.As for baitcasting, it's no big deal to lay out long smooth casts and put a lure exactly where you want it.Spinning is the most versatile tackle there is,but it doesn't have the accuracy of baitcasting nor can it throw the nearly weightless flies to rising fish.No need to feel bad if you don't happen to baitcast or fly fish do what is most fun for you.

What's up buddy boy. I have a bucket full of shimano spinning reels that I use more than anything and I have a few level wind bait casting reels like an Abu 7000 that lay the line back on the spool. Now I'm finding I "need" a straight up conventional reel to add a little distance to my cast. Do you think you get a lot more distance with a conventional than with the level wind baitcasting reel. Any suggestions? That Penn international looks sweet but I thought I'd try some just a little bit cheaper. I don't need another reel if I'm not going to use it. The added distance would be sweet in the canal tossing 4 and 5 oz jugs. Will I increace my distance or am i wasting money. Thanks.

Small hooks and chincy little bait dont work if you want big fish. Use whole crawdads, whole live baitfish if you have bullheads (sculpin) use them. We gob about 6-8 grass shrimp on one big hook and real tiny silver wire to thread them on the hook. Youre not gonna save bait or try and make it last for 30 fish. Get tiny little wire and gob those shrimp on like you mean it.

A 30# striper is the equivalent of a 8# stingray/bat ray at least the way they fight. They don’t call them the poor mans marlin for nothing. Caught a 30# bat ray the other week, darn thing nearly took the rod out of my hands, tangled the anchor line, and took me on a good hundred or so foot run until I could bring it in.

He uses his finger before it hits the floor (I guess to stop it or slow it down), I tried that I the line burn/cut my thumb with my 'baitcasting'/'levelwind' reel and yes I get bird's nest too. They seem complicated to use. Is there a benefit vs a spinning reel worth learning? Do they do something that a spinning reel cannot do? Or can you do something with a bait casting reel that you cannot do with a spinning reel?

Why were you winding against the drag at the beginning on that old Shimano Baitrunner? that is such a newbie thing to do, it gets you nowhere and just creates line twist. Also those BTR's spools were not made for braid, so the line lay will be awful. I thought you knew better....

Sure wish you were using circle hooks as those gut hooked fish likely died. We are now at a point where the whole striped bass fishery could collapse. Probably see a moratorium in the next few yrs as the commercial guys and illegals are collapsing the breed by poaching and taking the large breeders. Best way to save it is making it a sport fish only and a 3 yr moratorium on all fishing for take out. I hate to say it as I like to say what I catch but it proves to work. Look at snook now in Florida.

Grew up using spinner reels. Learned conventional reels. Hate the fact that you reel with your right hand. Hard to find conventional reels for left handers which technically are for right handers.

Conventional reel waist of money. When you get fish on it you will not have a time to put line even for second cast. Your better Choice is to use smaller line . Second choice to buy nice reel as Shimano ultegra .it will put line exceptionally great.And this reel is faster then your speedy conversional reel

11:00 to 11:12 is my favorite part of this video. What he was thinking to himself was that the drag was way to loose,,,,

You have to tighten your drag dude, from the beginning of the strike I knew it was gonna come off. I also cringe when people just start reeling like crazy while the fish is taking drag.

Gotta learn your gear mate, when you hear your drag is loose like that and you keep winding... that fish had every chance to set itself free. Also that dingling weigh just an extra help to shake the hook off. Also need to start to use proper rigs, just like pulley or up and over rigs...this two would work great while You fish the surf and both keeps your weights out of the way and doesnt help the fish to snag or shake the hook off.

Hey skipper if you read this I want to learn how to use a conventional reel with braid for casting I always use mono so I don’t burn my finger can you give tips on how to use my thumb on braid thx.

Just a little advise brother. Stop realing when drag is slipping and you'll have better luck. Bu continuing to real when the drag is slipping you add twist to the line which puts torque on the hook

Sorry man but if you can hear your drag ticking and its not even tight you shouldn't be reeling not stop like a 5 year old. You'll get better. Eventually you will learn to feel the fish and fight it efficiently.

Now, your uncle knows how to fight a fish. But the way you handle you reel is all wrong. Watch some videos on how to properly fight a fish and you won’t lose the next one.

goog city, set your drag for the 30 lb bass you want to catch not the micro schoolies you’re getting, with the right gear which you have you can horse in a 30 lb bass in a 6kt current... trust your gear unless you can’t tie a knot

What kind of rod did u use? I couldnt find surf rods with enough guide rings to be used with Conventional Reels.

You lost the fish because the drag was way too loose you shouldn’t here the drag sounds when your reeling or it’s to loose mate

You do know you are not supposed to reel against a fish pulling drag. If you’re going to do tutorials please show people the correct way to use equipment

Question: why use a conventional reel vs a spinning reel? Answer: because I wanna show off.

When the fish starts to run stop reeling you just breaking your shit and not doing any good you’re not getting in any line And if there’s people watching this who don’t know any better they’re going to start that bad practice as well let the drag fight the fish Keep your rod tip up and reel on the way down as long as it’s not taking out any line if it’s taking out line just let it run holy shit
@davidstock5279

I have the drag set to the tightest because I’m afraid if I use the drag, the fish is fighting in the water for too long and it will eventually break off. Am I right?

You should never be pulling drag whilst your reeling in #1 you will loose your fish as every turn leaves abit of slack line as the rod bounces. #2 way to ruin a baitrunner b
