I helped Johnny Johnson tenn bar at Helen's in 1972 after returning home from the navy. It just makes you want to cry. I lived at salton sea beach with my uncle dale Philips.
Sounds good that place smells like shit everywhere only a fool would set up a home in that cursed place mars is way above salton fake doodoo smellin sea
The current ideas to fixing the Salton Sea are "cart before the horse" type solutions. The Salton Sea exists because of salty waste water flow from local farms. Until a guaranteed flow is established, it is a waste of time and money to fix the Salton Sea.
I’ve even heard that pumping sea water from Baja could be a solution, but you are correct. Unless some sort of in and out flow occurs, it’s a waste of effort.
Outstanding production! I traveled to the Salton Sea in September 2022 and stayed there for a week in the Salton Sea Beach community. Such a beautiful place with amazing history!
I used to camp at the north shore yacht club playing pool on the second floor all the time in the early 1970’s it was nice then. We fished and skied all weekend and holidays. I’m planning on visiting next month
Thanks for this great video! The way I see it, every place has its pros and cons. Some say the Salton Sea is the last place they'd want to live, for others the last place they'd want to live is any city in the world, where people are murdered and exposed to all kinds of toxins. We're all gonna die of something, might as well enjoy the ride on the way. I suspect the toxic dust problem cannot be ignored as it will start to affect the entire SoCal area and then something will HAVE TO be done about it. I feel for all the children and seniors with respiratory issues.I wonder if there is some kind of filtration system they could fit into their homes? If the Lithium prospects come true, then hopefully that will provide the California government enough revenue to give to Mexico for the "Sea to Sea" canal from the Sea of Cortez. The Sea to Sea canal makes so much sense as it is all down hill and it would provide more economy for the Mexican side with the canal creating resort towns etc.. The dust problem would be mitigated. Win-Win 🤞😀🤞
Hurts my heart. Great documentary. Bombay beach was part of my stomping ground in the 60's & 70's. Joined the Army and saw the world. Noticed this piece and it peaked my curiosity. Now viewing other videos on this subject. Thank you for your time and talent invested in this drama. Maybe time for a update?
One overlooked solution is pump storage between the Salton Sea and Pacific Ocean in California. Pump water out of the Salton Sea at night using geothermal energy and produce hydroelectric power during the day by adding Pacific ocean water to the Salton Sea. The surface area of the Salton sea is 343 square miles. There is a 225 feet of elevation difference between the Salton Sea and Pacific Ocean. They have already bored a hole in the mountain between the imperial valley and San Diego to transport fresh water. They could drill another one for this battery storage idea. Another advantage is you effectively reduce the high salinity of the Salton Sea while improving air quality of the imperial valley by covering the entire dry lake bed.
Excellent and interesting documentary about this ecologically/economically challenged area. I plan to visit next time I'm in Palm Springs ... particularly the Ski Inn!
Since this was made a terrible fire ripped thru the trailer park in Desert Shores killing three people. Also, the swim club building he is standing in front of during the first interview has been razed, it was really unstable and almost ready to collapse..I was in that a few times! It's a fascinating place but really screwed up.
Our first attempt to sail the entire perimeter of the Sea's shoreline on our 15 foot Seaspray Catamans during the late '70's left 2 boats of our completely destroyed when a Berrago storm swept down the length of the Sea with 15 foot waves and deposied in peices at the south shore levees and the fields beyond. I managed to save my boat by crashing it high speed over cattails and tullee weeds , finally wading it across the New River- essentually raw sewerage and industrial waste flowing into the Salton Sea from Mexically. A year or two later our second attempt was successful, however the yellow hulls of one catamaran were permanantly staintied brown. Obviosely there is much more to this story than can be shared here- earthquakes, being fired upon, dismasting and a man rescued beying overboards, air and sea searches, stearn lectures by authorities. Stuff like that, but it's too late for the whole story. There was a photograph and short foot in the local paper at the time. Anyways, it's all true, and I'm likely the last survivor since I was in my late 'teens and my buddies were retired, or nearly so.
I think the Salton Sea was caused by a man made error while constructing an irrigation canal for the crops in the Imperial Valley. I don’t know how you can reduce the level of salt in the water. Millions of years ago that whole area was ocean. Isn’t that where the salt in the water came from? The Shore is lined with dead fish that can’t survive in such a salty environment. I think any plan to restore this “Sea” is a waste of money and time!
It would be a good place to park the homeless. Let each one of them get a welfare or disability check, have an on-site doctor to prescribe their drugs of choice, and they'd want to go live in the homeless shangri-la instead of on our streets.
This surely was a great watch this evening and I learned a lot about this "Salton Sea" which I've never really knew much of heard of nor even kind of knew where it was! I'm from Northern Canada and my geography is waning I suppose! Regardless I really loved coming along you with, your a very very very intriguing guy and narrator!
Shows Us All How Much Government Feels About National WildLife Refuge Means Ta Them Greedy Politicians Pockets Money An Gives Away Money All Our National Parks Around The USA Needs No Not This Government " Turns His Head Laughing At Your Questions
I find this place fascinating. I have always wondered why nothing ever seems to happen to repair this body of water, but then again whos jurisdiction does tat job fall under?
The economic potential for this impoverished area of California is very high if the sea was healthy and a sustainable strategy was implemented. A solution wouldn’t be cheap but the continued deterioration of the sea is impacting hundreds of thousands of people in California and northern Mexico.
There's is no shortage of RU-vid shows informing us of the reasons it needs to be saved. Trust me, recreation ain't one of them - though that would be a bonus.
I have always loved the salt and sea I did have the book about its beginning and where it was headed. I even thought of buying a partial of land when they had all the streets in and everything
It is heartbreaking that the state of California has allowed this problem to fester for so long. I’m also disappointed that the many environmental groups that claim to exist to protect birds are sitting silent as this critical element of the Pacific Flyway deteriorates by the month/year. Tragic.
Talked to the female (Mayor,Real Estate Manager, several unified positions)back in 2002 when I visited the Southern District where they had a grid work of empty lots with street signs and…..THAT WAS IT!!! She told me lots were like $1,500. It was an amazing experience! Drove in from San Diego through Anzoborriego State Park! The place has an extensive history!
If people want to live free of landlords, bosses and cops there's plenty places they can do that without their lives coming down to this. It's a geographical deformity. How many places in the world have bodies of water this huge that only get 12 ft deep? That's because besides this one odd happenstance, it's impossible.
Actually, the host immersed himself in the sea during filming to no bad effect. The water is very salty and everything on the sea bed is covered in mussels. It is thought the mussels were transported to the sea by PBY Catalina aircraft that used the sea for training before and during WWII.
The Farmers Use All The Water An Cut Off The Colorado River Two The SaltonSea An That Was The End Of SaltonSea Thanks Too The Greedy Farmers That Dont Care About WildLife Refuge Or Places To Fish "
'cacaphony"??? I think you'll find the word is cacophony. Man if you don't know how to pronounce words correctly at your age don't be a pretender, just pronounce words within your ability
THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD THAT THEY WILL NEEDS MORE PLACES TO PUTS PEOPLE & SO WHO KNOWS IF THEY WILL START TO SEES OTHER PEOPLE THERE OR NOT !?

I grew up in Salton Sea, 35 years ago my father passed away and according to my mom, it was because of toxic. We moved to Vegas and from time to time I take a drive just to remember my childhood. It's a beautiful place, just a forgotten paradise. Abandoned by society and our government.
